Did a little test yesterday with a friend, getting shots have become much quicker since I can single focus with the FM now. This is a relevantly cheap setup as I got the takumar for about $70(US), Isco Ultra star fro about $400, FM was about $750.

Pentax Super Takumar 50mm 1.4, Isco Ultra Star Anamorphic Lens, Focus Module Lens, Panasonic GH4, Natural Picture Profile with all settings dialed down, Simple color grade in Premiere, BGM : Bic Runga 'Listening for the Weather'

  2. Yes you will need some sort of lens support.  If you think it sags down now, wait awhile and see...  I really wish Panasonic released a firmware patch for external monitoring in 4K photo mode.  Really frustrating to shoot 3:2 or 4:3 with no monitor support.

I've got a lens support for the rig I can use but the thing is the front rotates so thought it wasn't a good idea to put it there

  3. FM Lens rack focusing test ‪#‎FMLens‬ ‪#‎Anamorphicshop‬
Super Takumar 50mm f1.4, Isco Ultra Star Anamorphic Lens, Panasonic GH4

Did some tests with the FM. So far loving it, its working perfectly now that I've gotten used to it a little bit and also solved the slouching problem i had initially. It takes some time to get it configured to your rig and camera but oh man smooth rack focusing is orgasmic after a long period of painful double focusing. And I like the fact that it protects the anamorphic glass elements inside. Only downside I see is your rig becoming considerably heavier but thats not always a bad thing. Will do a review and full test at some point.

  4. Yes I think adapting a medium format lens is the problem here, I definitely get it with a cheap focal reducer but I haven't seen this with any other lenses so I was worried that it was to do with the sensor.

With some more tests with other lenses and based other people's opinions, its not the sensor and its either the problem of adapting this particular lens with the GH4 or problem with the coating on the lens (which is old). The inside of the adapter I used it very matte black(fotodiox). Not many M645 to MFT adapter I could find other than this one.

Anyway happy that its not the sensor(thank god)

  5. Guys need help, I shot this on the GH4 with a Mamiya 80 1.9, Cinelike D (with non speedbooster adapter) and ungraded. If you look at the middle of the frame there is a blue tint, I think I got this before with the GH4 with a 50mm 1.4 pentax on a cheap speedbooster off ebay. Anyone know what this is?

  6. I did a quick test with the Must HD field monitor, GH4 and the Atomos HDMI cable (with isco ultrastar). I was meaning to do this earlier but a friend wanted to borrow the monitor to see if it was worth bulk purchase for their shop. This is for anyone who is interested in similar setup.

Ok so to summarize what I think overall, this set up is great but not perfect (yet). The monitor image quality is good and works well with GH4 menu interface etc. but GH4 still needs firmware update for HDMI output for the 4k Photo mode, so that is a downside for the moment for anamorphic lens users like us. I don't think I can get a exact aspect ratio of the image I get from a 2x lens even if we get the firmware update because the monitor is fixed to certain aspect ratio modes (can't be customized). However I can get fair idea of the final outcome using these modes.  I think this monitor wins over even smallHD in terms of image quality and functionality, especially when you think of the price point. I just wish it had a better looking menu and a more robust body build. My friend who borrowed the monitor mentioned that the changeable battery mount on the back is a unique feature at this price point.

The atomos HDMI to micro HDMI cable is GREAT.... like reallllyyyyy solid great. I don't need to worry about it one bit while shooting. Especially with the cable lock on the MustHD. Not sure if there are any other video purpose built cables like this but this is by far the best one i've used for a filming situation.

Monitor hood flips out into place with a spring or something. Design is really good, materials not so much. I wouldn't want to drop it. This is a shame because I really think the lack of a solid steel body build will put a lot of people off from buying this monitor even though other features on this thing are great.

  7. Why do you think this is embarrassing?

Given that the actors are too young to be convincing, it's still a good job that shows a lot of talent, imo.

    that's true!!!! I fully agree!

Thank you~ you are both very kind.

I think its a bit like painting, where sometimes when I see my old work,

I want to rip it off the wall but can't because I've already sold it to someone lol.

Really good point about the actors actually. I think at that time I was guilty of working with an age group that I could

    feel comfortable in.

  8. This was done couple of years ago. The whole thing was written, filmed and edited in about 3 weeks time so everything was in a rush.

Some shots are pretty bad, editing is not really all there and some cheesy dialogue.

I was embarrassed to show this to people so I didn't really put it out but I guess bad feed back is better than no feedback so here it is. Any comments are welcome thank you.

I don't know where you guys live in the world ~ but summer is finally here in New Zealand.

Took this short video after work on Tuesday. Slowly getting used to using this lens and workflow.

Such a fun set up to film and edit, even though the dual focusing is a bit of an annoyance.

I'm still wondering whether to get the GH4 or NX1 for an upgrade.

    What do you think?

Ok so bad news first. Scale mode on this thing only supports 16:10, 16:9, 15:9, 1.85:1, 2.35:1 and 4:3

With 2.35:1 being the closest to 2x but still far off and I don't think you can customize these settings at all.

Good news is this monitor is great otherwise. Feels a little bit plasticky but nothing too brittle or annoying.

Screen itself is good and really like the hood design. Only tested on my 60D so I will do a proper review once I get to plug it into a newer camera. Hope this helps in the meanwhile.

After work yesterday, drove past the Auckland Domain.

Weather was too good to pass up the opportunity to shoot something.

Although it got cold really fast again. Can't believe its supposed to be summer.

Slowly getting used to the dual focusing. I found myself rushing a little bit in this kind of

situation because I wanted to get shots while the sun was still up.

Had a quick lens test last night with the new Isco ultra star I got off ebay.

Lens works fine except I quickly found you need diopters to frame more freely. And the focus ring is really stiff not sure

if the thing is built that way or just age stiffened it.

I arrived home really late but had to try the workflow before going to sleep.
Couldn't get my brother to be on camera so I made him film me instead.

Bad iso settings I know, but room was not so well lit.

Found that this lens had 1.9x Squeeze Factor rather than 2x.  So edited in 3648x1080
then, exported downscaled to 1920X568, aspect ratio turned out to be something like
    3.38 : 1

I think I would crop off the sides when I actually do some filming with it.
