  1.

Shot on a DSLR. Whippeeeeee. Basic camera shots. Honestly looks like it was shot by high school film students.

For those criticising, try to shoot a movie on a shoestring budget.  Film making the indie way is a huge amount of work and stress typically done by a very small crew of highly dedicated folks.  Most good 10-second commercial videos these days have much higher budgets and crew than the average micro budget indie feature.

    Great job OP.

  2. So my A7S and Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Smart Adapter (Mark IV)†works great with:

    • Canon 50mm f/1.8 II EF
    • Sigma 24-105mm F/4 DG OS HSM Lens for Canon DSLR
    But not with:

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM f/CANON
... works for 5-25 minutes then stops working, frequently crashes, works again for 2-10 mins then crashes again

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR
... works for 5-25 minutes then stops working, frequently crashes, works again for 2-10 mins then crashes again

I wrote to Metabones support about this issue but got this response:

Are you trying to set your adapter to advance mode when using those two Lens?

Turn on camera first, and then install Lens to adapter, then install adapter on camera and hold the side button as the same time…..

    Pls try again…..

    Thank you!

    Alex

    What is this advance mode?

When I swap out a lens on the A7S, I simply switch off the camera.  Install the new lens.  Then switch on the camera.  I always keep the Metabones on the camera, never take it off.  I also never use the button on the side of the Metabones adapter.  Maybe I pressed it once a few weeks ago.

I use my A7S exclusively for film making, Manual focus only - never auto-focus.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

  3. So I am loving my A7S for film making apart from one crucial aspect, skin tone.

My Canon 6D videos have great skin tone.

I have not been able to match those on my A7S yet.  My A7S skin tones are frequently verging on looking like sun burn, where my 6D captures true realistic skin tones under exactly the same light, scene and ISO/shutter/aperture settings.

Could some of you pros give me some picture profile setting advice.

I have tried the standard picture profiles, and various custom profile settings - wow, the options are extensive.

I did a lot of googling and found a dozen or so custom settings - many were SLog2 though and I don't want to use SLog2 due to the color grading workflows involved.

If any of you good folks could provide the custom profiles you use to get good video and skin tones on the A7S I would HUGELY appreciate it.

  4. SLog2 is the only profile with the ISO restriction.

At times I even really like the No Profile setting.

At other times, I prefer other settings.

How to pick the best one?  It's a tad subjective but...

Do a lot of googling, seach on: A7S picture profiles

Test all the standard settings, and the above.  Learn how to fully adjust the settings.

After testing, pick the ones you like.

  5. While rolling? It seems you still just get 4x zoom identical in resolution to movie mode while shooting manual but you do get that second option of 5.7x zoom when not recording. Let me know if I'm missing something - would love that extra punch in while shooting.

A7r punch in is superior in resolution for some reason - more pixels maybe?

With my A7S, in Stills move (manual focus) I was able to find a 8.3x zoom setting.

I would still like a bit more than 8.3x zoom to ensure my focus is spot-on - my Canon 6D offered more, and the A7R offers a lot more zoom capability.

Focus peaking is useful but I find in various scenarios that punch-in checking trumps focus peaking.

  6. Thank Andrew for the tip! It really does make a big difference for focusing in stills mode.

But in stills mode it seems I loose the ability to access the audio level control.  It works fine once I start recording.  Did you find a workaround for this issue?   Hope Sony will bring out a new firmware to fix those small annoyances.

The workaround is to flick over to Movie mode, set the audio level you want.  They flick back to Stills mode.  The audio level you set in Movie mode will be locked in for Stills mode.

There is one slight additional pain which is that in Movie mode you can see the audio levels whilst not recording, in Stills mode you can only see the audio levels once you hit Record.

  7. Looks very interesting indeed, with a very hard hitting storyline.

And one hell of a review from Variety, well done:

Noaz Deshe makes a staggering debut with this drama about the African albino muti trade.

Good luck with this.  Will look forward to seeing it once it gets to US shores.
