Could you elaborate on how you are making life tough for yourself?

I too am eagerly awaiting news on the low light performance of the GH4. Though I'd love a C100 I can't justify spending soo much money just as yet.

Ahh... Magic Lantern saved my butt while using it with my lowly 600D/T3i at an event. Quickly changing ISO, WB amongst others was a god send.

Why do you say Magic Lantern isn't useful for live event shooting?

Ahh... Maybe the 5Dmk3 is better for your pocket then.

Err apart from the 50mm, FF lenses are definitely not cheap.

How many bodies are you looking to pick up? If 2 or more you can use a mix of 5D3 and C100. Again, I have no clue how much you want to/can spend.

What camera support do you use. Monopods and Steadicams (or equivalent) or Shoulder Rigs? The C100 is awesome, though I like the occasional slo-mo which you need a work around to get with it. It has built in NDs, an EVF (which sadly isn't too great) and the best low light out of the lot. How many Cameras do you need and how much do you want to spend?

Yeah. Most Nikons can be adapted to Canon, but beware of the newer Nikon G lenses as these have an electronic aperture control and there are very few (and expensive) adaptors that will make them work. The Canons can't be adapted to the Nikon due to the flange distance. The Kit lens with the Canon has IS, but doesn't have a proper focus ring, which you need as you need to focus manually. It will just frustrate you. Just because it gives decent low light performance doesn't mean you should use the kit lens. use a Lens with atleast F 2.8 is low light situations. pushing the ISO too much will result in noise.

There is no perfect camera. None of the camera you are looking at will have decent audio with the in-built mic. It will be much much better with an external mic like the Rode Video Mic or Video Mic pro but will never be professional. The D5300 is just under double the price of the 600D. You are probably better off buying a 600D and Tamron 17-50/2.8 than a D5300. Will cost you the same, Next buy a Rode Video Mic. Between 9K and 15K. I was in the same boat as you mid last year. Lot of people told me to get the Nikon D5200 (the D5300 was not released as yet) I had a strict budget of 30K. Even though I could have borrowed some money and got the D5200 which was 8-10K more, it was never ending as then I could have spent double and got a something better. Magic Lantern really attracted me to the Canon. Do I wish I had chosen the Nikon? The though only crosses my mind when I have to film something in ultra low-light situations and because friends and relatives have Nikon glass. BUT. The usability of the Nikon compared to a ML Canon is quite sad for Run and Gun situations so I am happy with my choice.

Instead of the Juiced link, buy an external recorder like the Tascam DR-40. Will be better. Record the lavs to that.

The G6 isn't available in India. At least not easily.

The articulated screen helps with extreme angles. Think camera on the floor low angle. It's a call you have to make. I would initially have loved 1080p60 but that articulated screen has helped me more.

So the D5300 is better yeah?

Maybe he should have shot at identical ISOs, aperture and shutter speed so that we could get a better idea, but I understand what you are saying.

So are you saying that the Canon is two stops brighter at ISO 800?

As I said (or maybe didn't) if you are shooting in a controlled environment then go for the Nikon. An extra few seconds required for changing the aperture should hopefully not compromise your shoot.

Does the end user really care about the maths involved or are the results more important?

The meaning of the term are the words themselves. Something that looks like it was shot on film. It's quite simple. One can go on and on about the details of colour, grain, frame rate, etc. All boils down to the same thing. It's something that really doesn't require much debate as even within these parameters people tend to argue about what is "filmic" but to each will have their own view. As far as FPS is concerned, when motion pictures came into prominence 23.976 fps came into existence and as we have been used to that frame rate we consider it "filmic". If we were always used to say 30fps we would find that "filmic." If film was never in existence and the standar for video that was displayed on the big screen was 30 fps we would always consider 30 fps as filmic.

Anyone thought that maybe Andrew says that DSLR is dead for video is because there is not enough innovation? We have truly been spoilt...

Magic Lantern doesn't improve the Video Quality much on a 600D unless you mess around with encoder settings, which is not completely reliable. Tragic Lantern does help with that to a certain extent. The video quality out of the box with the D5200 will be much better including better low light sensitivity. What Magic Lantern does is improve features and usability of the 600D. Manual audio meters, focus peaking, Kelvin White Balance, more ISO options, Histograms, Waveforms, etc the list is huge. I wouldn't be able to use my 600D for video if it didn't have magic lantern which I have gotten used to now. ISO and White balance can be changed with a single click. Helps with run and gun. The D5200 has very bad usability (at least for me) and at this point I am making the sacrifice for picture quality due to my main requirement of having 80% quality with the shot 5/5 times than say having 100% 4/5 times. Also I got my 600D+18-55 kit lens for under 28K. Look for more deals, don't get the 55-250/300. You can use the digital zoom of the 600D with the D5200 doesn't have.

Hmm... was seriously considering replacing my T3i with this but I think i'll wait for the GH4 to come out before I make my decision. the price of the GH4 along with it's low light performance will kind of decide it for me. Also Magic Lantern makes the T3i so much easier to use. Access to ISO and Kelvin White Balance without digging through menus, focus peaking, zebras, etc are all features that are valuable to me and save tons of time for run and gun/event stuff.
