  1. Exactly, did you see the difference in DR and how much impact it has on the image ? it is huge, add noise reduction in post and you question why 5d 3 is so praised. One thing you can't do, moire and aliasing, that is a problem you can't fix in post so I guess that can be a deal breaker.
  2. I wonder why they always screw up those tests, he is not the first to put a 5d 3 vs Nikon or whatever brand and "omit" something. This time, in the video he says 1/60 iso 1600 2.8, yet, on the canon he says f-stop 2.5, why? well, sony senors have a high DR and because of it, ISO 800 looks like iso 2000 on 5d 3 or even more, that's why 5d 3 is so dark compared to Nikon at same ISO and settings, so, it's logical to use as much iso as you need to brighten a scene to comparable levels since DR is so different. Another important thing, right out of the box Nikon has a lot of noise compared to canon, but, who doesn't post process the image, especially who shoots with DSLR's, and it's not much, color and noise reduction, key to this is noise reduction, add this to the final result and you suddenly have an image so good compared to 5d 3 you question what is the fuss about how good it is in low light. That's why DXomark rates 5d3 and canons so low in low light scores, first thinking is they are mad, but they aren't because they try to bypass any image processing the camera has when testing sensor, take raw image files and put them trough topaz noise reduction or whatever you use and you get about the same results but with higher MP count on Nikon or sony in this case, result, canon sucks, same for video, take that A7R or d800 footage and reduce noise in post and you get the same results of canon but with better DR and lower need it ISO.
  3. A7R is a strange product, video mode can't reach gh3's image in sharp and probably DR, if it is like d800, I've seen it and requires noise reduction, sharpness and lots of color correction from a flat_11 profile. Then you think about stills, small size, probably lighter than a mark3 or d800, but, you need to look at this from a system point of view, how many lens, how fast the focus speed, speedlights and wireless speedlights systems and features, no pro will touch this. So, where does it fit ? who buys this ?
  4. Unfortunately this is true, met some people who don't know gh2 and 3 exists, they are like "what ? Panasonic ? what ? " When 70D was first shown, some friends thought this never existed in a camera before, taping on the back for focus, yeah baby, canon :)
  5. So to sum up the conclusions of all here, you all might use 5d 3 in raw but it will never be the main workhorse of any production, it's like the poors man raw camera.
  6. What filmmaking are you talking about, school project ? kiddie stuff for no money ? there is no paid job where you go with mark3 and magic lantern firmware, shooting raw on hopefully fast CF's hoping it won't drop frames.
  7. Funny, let me put it even more blunt, NO DSLR holds a candle to GH3 right now, let alone a future GH4, the image is so soft it's almost embarrassing for 2013, dynamic range is lost because of codec and image processing. I tested in weddings d600,5d 2 and 3 (from colleagues )compared to gh3, except the full frame look wich is gorgeus for details, DSLR's are dead to me. Once you put a metabones speedboster with fast primes you can forget about ever using a DSLR for video. Also, DSLR's are dead to professionals, you can have c100,c300,fs100,fs700, they are way better than any dslr or mirrorless, but for the strictly for family/travel stuff you hardly beat the exceptional video quality of gh3, the small size, easy of use and decent picture quality. Of course we are not talking about shooting raw, even serious shooters who do 20 events or more a year don't ever bother shooting raw with Magic lantern.

    Dear Nikon...

Stills gear sells a whole lot better than video gear, I asked Nikon about the aperture problem a few years ago and the reply was they aim towards photography and video is not in their plans. I wonder what will canon do with future canon Mark 4-5.. when 4k will be the new standard, it's bad already the image is soft as hell compared to pro camcorders and some mirrorless like gh2 and 3.
  9. I can understand the bitching about 4k, it can't be bad if you have money to spend but right here is the problem, money, it doesn't bring a huge  improvement to your productions and will become a must if you want to survive and have clients, clients are stupid and if the tv ads say 4k is what you need they will want a 4k production. We know a full frame sensor with good low light perf and some excellent primes and raw recording brings a whole lot more than 4K but there is no money to be made in that compared to the 4K hype. Hell, even a phone right now records 4k, they are desperate and we are hurting because we know we are gonna spend a lot of money.
  10. Why think so small about resolution, imagine inventive crops you can do like you do in photography, maybe you don't like the composition that you made in the field and you change it, maybe you want to do a creative zoom in your video, fast, slow, extract precious moments from video that you can print. Some of you probably seen this but for everybody else http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRDIV0trv_Q
  11. Drop in sales could be attributed to lack of real tehnological advance, in photography world you can't tell the difference bettwen a d700 and a d800, or a 5d mark 2 and a 5d mark 3 on a print, wedding albums and stuff like that. Same thing with crop sensors, canon is squezzing the same sensor tehnology for so long ( except 70d ) that there is no point getting a "new" renamed DSLR. Canon won't die but Nikon might because of the old lens design, what will they do with that stupid aperture lever when mirrorless cameras are getting unconformable good, how to make the switch with those lenses. I am not surprised canon is stepping up so much in video area, stills is so done, you can shoot with a mark3 5 years from now and not feel the need for an upgrade, in Nikon camp people with d3s can end their photography career with that body.
  12. Strange conclusion, huh, 5d mk 3 best of the 3 ??????? First of all, playing with ML shooting raw is not an option for a paid job, unlles you have some low end jobs where people don't care much for the work you do and get the "cheapest one", I guess you can screw up there, nobody cares. Then the pocket cinema, good video quality but very poor ergonomics, how much will you pay for that quality, well, less than 5d mk 3 but still, you can't go shoot a wedding with one little pocket cinema, you need a few and some patient people. Then the gh3, the most balanced out of the 3, amazing ergonomics, for chirst sake you could do rack focus by tapping on the back of the screen, instant auto exposure by pressing one button, you can even go all auto and works like a camcorder but we are pro's so no need. In the world of event videographers those 5d's are dying in favor of modern tools made for video, fs100,fs700,gh3 DUH,c100,c300, all of these little babies have good ergonomics and image that looks professional, not that plastic look of the standard canon DSLR's. My point is who the heck uses 5d mk3 shooting RAW an event like a wedding, or uses pocket cinema with that tiny sensor, in the real world where money is made you can't be toying like that. My rating for money making in event shooting is 1. gh3 by far for anything 2. 5d mk3 as a second camera for details and use of full frame sdof 3. pocket cinema for moments when you have all the time in the world from shooting to postprocessing.     LE OR none of the above in favor of fs700 or c300.
  13. Read again, I said Sony is greedy too ! XF100 has ONE 1/3 inch sensor (low light) , it's crap for today's standards and even when it was launched, saw low light footage and it is a hopelles camera. Then the Panasonic, it has tiny sensors but they are backside illuminated http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back-illuminated_sensor   and a 1.5 f-stop lensm, and they are 3 of them. Also, my writing is faulty because I don't speak or write english natively, if you are one of those americans this might shock you but not all of us speak english, and the earth is round, no kidding.
  14. Doesn't matter much wich camera is better, storytelling, composition, lightining and sound are more important than the resolution or dynamic range the camera has, sure you need a bare minimum but for sure that bare minimum is not a c100 or a 500, you can even do with a couple of gh2's as Upstream Color movie showed us.
  15. What is that company that recycles the same sensor tehnology for quite a few years ( DX ), is it Canon ? and what is that company that charges almost double ( at least in my country ) for the "new" 24-70. Check out XF100/105 price, or :D wait wait   Canon XA10 price against a Panasonic camcorder like ag-ac90, it's a joke, if it were for Canon the air we breathe would cost money.   The hell are you talking peederj ? are you from this planet ? We can agree on one thing, Sony and Canon are the most greedy of them all but at least Sony has some new sensor tehnology.
  16. Anyone who's done a bit of photography knows the power of raw but it's way to much trouble for anything  more than experimental work. Someone earlier asked for advice on a camera for events, well, nothing comes close to a gh3, you can have the mother of all hacks that gives you 4k,8k, doesn't matter, it's a hack that has severe limitations and in the end you can't risk go to a job with unstable gear. First I was excited but then I thought, if you have the money you can have c300, fs700 with future 4k upgrade and already amazing ISO that obliterates 5d mark3, sure 5d  is nice but serious event videographers are switching to the real deal, real cameras designed for this. Now about the gh3 vs tons of DSLR's that offer better iso, sure 5d gives way better iso, even Nikons do now but then you look at other things, silent autofocus, touch screen autofocus, wayyy lighter and easier for long steadycam shots, sharper image, articulated screen, tons of settings for making it easier and faster. Then you think about the ISO, when do I ever use iso 6400 or even more, in events ( by events I mean weddings ) almost never, you light it or carry a lamp is need it but with a fast prime you can go anywhere, so you probably max at  3200 and very very rarerly, and you have neat video to clean up the footage. In my opinion if it is for events go for cheap gh3's or expensive c100,c300,fs100,fs700, market changed in what it can offer, if years ago DSLR's where the only thing to give amazing iso and easy SDOF now we have a hell of a lot of choices.
  17. If this is in relation to showcasing the raw hack I have one complaint, why is everything shot on a tripod, no moving, no steadycam run and gun, it's like those promotional videos for a camera where you see static gorgeous footage but as soon as you buy it and you start using it is not the same, I want to see some fast action and how it looks. Let's see how it handles fast action.
  18. I too was under the impression they can't do it, processing power/buffer.. something, it seems we know nothing. This can't be of much use for professional use ( ML new hack ) but it sure gets the market excited for the next best thing. But I am pissed tehnology changes this fast, I get they wanna live too ( Canon,Sony,Nikon,Panasonic.. ) but for god sake  every year something major happens, better ISO, better dynamic, crazy black magic stuff, you just can't keep up with the spending money on gear if you want to offer the best. I moved from camcorders to DSLR's this year and messed up my whole profit for this year, and the spending just started, I need lenses, good audio, now it seems in the near future I might need at least 2k, what the hell. I guess I can just ignore it and do with what I have but it doesn't work like that, some new kid on the block enters the market and goes for the latest stuff, maybe he is bad but once he advertise 2k/4k I get the same requests from my clients too. I tell you this, 2k and 4k to the masses is coming faster than expected, some of us are slaves to constant upgrades rather than make a decent living from event videography.
  19. Things are changing very fast, one day you are content with the gear you have and next day Black Magic gives 2.5k or 4k resolution for very little money, now Canon can do even more, I bet in 2014 we will see a working 4k camera/setup for run and gun. I hate it :), please stop, I can't afford to waste money on more resolution/dynamic range.
  20. Amazing, but, how practical is for some of us to run and sell our gh's to have this, I shoot weddings and I need a super stable body, also I need good codec for editing, imagine the workflow hassle of recording raw with mkIII and the potential dangers of losing THE WEDDING ! I guess for low end music videos, commercials and who knows what projects that can have another cut this is quite amazing, the rest of who eighter have the money for epic/red/alexa or need rock solid stable equipement this can't ever be practical. As for Canon knowing this will happen, it might be true, in computers land many many years ago overclocking was a no no as intel and amd was concerned, now you see overclocking as a feature/bonus, you see black editions, unlocked, water cooling given by them :) , everything is overclockable and the little people are so happy they got a couple a hundred of megahertz "for free" and reached performance of higher priced models, In concusion, Canon knows and they might even give them a hand if they get stuck along the way :). Now it's probably time for Sony to give that fs700 4k firmware.
  21. Amazing, I watched it and never even crossed my mind this was made with a little gh2 :), imagine how I can sell my video wedding services now when I say to them I capture video with tools that are used in cinema, and I have proof now. Now the joking aside, it was never about the tools, it was always about the story telling, composition, light, these cheap tools we have acces now gives us so much creative freedom and improves an already good story with better images that captures the viewwers attention even more. I guess in the days of only RED/Arri/Cine Alta this couldn't be done without a huge budget, now it's possible even for the little guys, imagine the years to come and what crazy beautifull things we are gonna see, we already see it happening, vimeo is full of talented people that do amazing work.
  22. They hold back so much because they don't want to kill the camcorder market, it's bad enough the 7d and 5d took the event videography market from the camcorders, now if they give crisps video with ultra high dynamic range from the 5d's then who will buy those 4000-5000 euro canon xf300/305. Blackmagic is proof of what can be done if it is desired. I doubt we will see 2k from the 5d's, they need processing power and it's not there. What can be done is more dynamic range and less compression. Man are the days of camcorders numbered.

    GH3 Guide

I can't wait for it, I ordered a gh3 for wedding videography and need to know all those profiles for low light, flat for color grading and who knows what more. I am slowly moving to DSLR's this year and this is the place to get the information :).
