In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3
YouFirstEye replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
GH3 is the over all winner for me. Top features: Full HD at 60 fps, continuous recordable time, time code (for mutli cams), easy post workflow, practical ergonomics. https://vimeo.com/72737956 -
I paid $300 for Nikon 1 v1 with the kit len. It's a small price for a mirrorless camera for photos and videos. As a bonus, the burst mode introduces the concept of moving picture in RAW per shot/clip allowing me to experiment. And that's a good thing.

Nikon 1 is the only mirrorless camera that could shoot 30pfs (for 1 second) and 60fps (for 0.5 second). Nikon 800, Canon Mark III, and the 1DX are not mirrorless camera and they just do not have the shutter speed to operate at that fast frame rate as they are limited by the physical movement of the mirror. I preordered a BM pocket video camera (body) from B&H (at my own risk without a post-release review.) But I will keep my Nikon 1 and Canon 5D Mark II. Len, variable ND filter, SD cards (fast and 64GB), workflow will cost extra. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkTlVx5q7Jw http://n

I don't have a V2 to compare with V1. Someone here mention that V2 has more noise than V1. This may be true but not sure by how much. To overcome this, use fast len and lights. Go for lower ISO (i.e., no more than 800) if possible. Also perform some noise reduction in post.

Nikon decided to use Nikon CX sensors for the Nikon 1 series. The sensor is lager than those in camcorders or super 16mm film. But It is small than micro 4/3, APS-C and full-frame. http://library.creativecow.net/articles/solorio_marco/hdslrs-for-video/DSLR-Sensor-Sizes.jpg That is a giving constraint of Nikon 1 v1. For smaller sensor such as Nikon CX, two immediate concerns are low-light performance and wider depth of field (DOF). Nikon 1 v1 is 10.1 MP camera which is not too high for the sensor size having a reasonable low-light performance (Nikon 1 v2 is 14.2 MP camera.) These concerns

There is a ML L3 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon 1 v1. The camera also has an interval timer shooting settings to take photos automatically at preset intervals (i.e., for timelapses.) http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/kie88335f7869dfuejdl=-cww2/1V1RM_EN.pdf

Idea to increase dynamic range of Nikon 1 v1 burst mode RAW footage: in post, increase exposure in odd number frames and decrease exposure in even number frames. This is possible because of RAW capture. Good or bad idea? Or just apply a HRD preset to all frames in Lightroom 4. ref: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVpmrmHWy0w http://www.magiclantern.fm/hdr-video

Here is my first test clips with Nikon 1 V1. I am considering to get another v1 instead of a v2 for better value (i.e., an extra battery, an alternative camera). Over heating is my main concern. Capture with Nikon 1 v1 in RAW (12bits, 4:4:4, sRGB) at 30fps (Electronic shutter Hi.) Import all NEF files (10,132 KB each) in Lightroom 4. I use Timelaspe presets for Lightroom from LRTimelapse. Render out in full-HD 24fps at a half speed. No color grading to show the sensor's output; lower highlights in post. I did not use ND or polarizing filter this time; the step-up adapter is on its way.
