  1. Let me get his right: The Metabones Speed booster canon EF to sony Nex mount will take a prime lens and shrink it down to the sensor size of Sony's Nex cameras... but (when available) the canon EF to MFT mount will not take prime lenses? or will not shrink them down all the way?

I have been reluctant to look at MFT as im not sure the life of this format, but with the MSB i thought this was not a worry (until i found out MSB for MFT was not as good as the Nex mount version), so that in mind am I better off at looking at sony nex cameras instead of the GH3?

I'm finding it very frustrating to know what format to invest in as im starting from scratch, but have canon and old primes available to me, as well as some nikon primes. I thought the GH3 or even BMPCC was a good option for me as i have a small budget...

I'm just worried that im going to spend all of the little money i have and then end up a year or so down the line having to invest in new lenses and accessories, on top of a new camera. :-/

If lens adaptation is your goal, yes, NEX would be a much better option.

For me, a 14-140 zoom and a fast prime like 17/1.8 plus occasional manually adapted EF primes would be sufficient for my purpose.  Not that expensive and very light to travel with!

  2. Problem now = do I sell my V1 and order the newly announced Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera which is priced within range of prosumer/hobbiest?  ie. me.

Excuse me replying to my own post, but I'm sure I can live with the ProRes 4:2:2 output from this camera recorded to SD cards, but I will miss being able to play with the almost 4K footage with the abilty to crop!   But then again, I will get long clip times, and the 25fps frame rate that makes so much more sense for me in the UK.

I bought myself a new V1 based on this this thread.  After a few days I decided to keep it, not for its 4K raw capability, which is too limiting to be practical in my mind, but for its burst shooting capability as a street camera.  At 10fps, I can keep shooting stills for 3.4 seconds, long enough to capture an interesting scene, and fast enough not to miss the critical moment.  I shot 1800 pictures in a couple of hours, and the battery still showed as full.  I was able to pick many keepers out of this session, improving my success rate by many folds.  Moreover, it's completely silent, and the AF is always spot on.  For this purpose, it's quite a unique camera, even better than the like of 1Dx or D1s.  I'm happy that I stumbled on this gem.

  3. I use Premiere Pro.  When I import 50i clips, the properties show as 25p, so I believe they're native 25p file contained in the 50i wrapper.   The files don't need any deinterlacing like those from my 60i camcorder.

RX100 Questions, to get it down to a dummy level:

    - So, 50p onto a 25p timeline is generally OK? And how comes exposure into play here? if possible never under 1/50 and over 1/120 or so? In sun light you have to go up to 1/500 sometimes, though. And what happens in low light when you have to go 1/25 (in 50p)? Footage seems just about alright, but have not dealt with placing it on various timelines etc.

    - When I drop 50i on 25p timeline it doesn t really feel like original 25p data, FCP X seems to be doing something with it (?). Never worked with interlaced containers/wraps, looks like trouble...

    - DRO in video creates visible noise in shadows, so why recommend it? Not so flat image profile seems preferable to ugly noise.

Thanks for all the tips so far.

  4. I'm thinking of getting a V2 to complement my RX100 for the telephoto scenes when travelling light.  One concern I have is about the 30p frame rate in video mode.  I live in a PAL country and my RX100 is 50p.  Would it be a major problem if I intercut the footages?
