  1. Fuji x100s (expensive) obviously not as pocketable as the rx100 but its got almost FF low light capability. And for me, that was key, since so much "shoot anywhere work" is low light and social events.

Ideally, I think you'd have a rx100 in your quick to get pocket, the X100s in a slightly harder to get pocket, and a 53mk3 in your man bag with a zoom in it and a 50mm prime. :)

  2. Thanks guys, thats encouraging, not as bad as I thought. My other option here is to not actually use my GH2 at all, sell it (since I can get what I paid for it) and only use the OMD, which I also picked up cheap. Now I now thats not quite at the level of the GH2, but in only having one body (and I am not going to get rid of the OMD since it is my primary ITL camera) and using that money on glass.

I mean, its not a perfect camera for video, but then I am only just starting out...right? The IBIS means I can use any old glass stabilised or also use something like the 40-150 Oly which is great and doubles up very well for travelling and stills....

  3. As I get more into photography, I realise there are other things, like colour and contrast, that give each lens its characteristics.

I can get my head around what happens inside a lens for it to be more or less sharp than another lens - I can conceptualise, for example, imperfections creeping in and causing the loss of detail.

But I do not understand either how some glass, or some arrangement of glass, changes things like colour and contrast and also why there is not some objectively good colour and contrast that all lenses try and get close to.

Can anyone help? Or suggest I read anything?

  4. Thanks everyone.

My first project is going to be a short film of a tribal group of people in Arunachal Pradesh, North East India, but since this will involve a lot of travel I can just tell a lot of it is going to be handheld...

  5. Thanks guys.

What is the best way/best place to buy used lenses? I cannot seem to trust anything on ebay!

I should add that I am using this for documentary work, as opposed to anything "creative", and value flexibility and speed over certain lovable characteristics of a lens

  6. Please let me know if you think this is a good idea..

I am a total beginner, looking to learn how to shoot. I am therefore interested in starting on a budget. I managed to pick up a gh2 for $500. When I started to look at the price of the best m43 primes I started researching going to a Nikon camera, and then spent some weeks wondering what to do. Now I have decided to stay with gh2, but I'd quite like the versatility of using m43 lenses as opposes to legacy ones.

I already have the Oly 45mm, Pansonic 14mm and I am thinking about getting the 40-150. Do you think I can do everything with the 3 lenses, at least when I am starting? Is there anything else I should consider?

  7. Hi guys/Andrew

How does the D7100 square up video wise? If its anything like the D5200, thats good enough for me, and it would therefore make a great all round camera. Good high ISO, cheap primes, great video, great AF. Does everything!
