1. I like the look of that.

I'm such a mingebag though, I'll no doubt end up stuffing the cheapo battery I put in as option 3 in a Maplin project box and adding tripod mounting ;)
2. What are your thoughts ?

This looks quite elegant

This next one has been proven working with the BMC already apparently

Or there is the DIY option like this

I like the elegance of the first one, the second one is a bit more stealth as it doesn't tie you into a rail system while the last one appeals on both the stealth and the cost option.

Think I might go for 1 and 3.
3. Not much to add but just for completeness...

CVP Retail Unit - No correspondence from them since the email regarding delay due to 'licensing issues' that was quickly refuted by BMD.

Not sure of my place in the queue - possibly not that far behind Andrew - but maybe not early enough to be in the first batch if it is the 30 that is rumoured.

I'll be at IBC so it would be sod's law that they decide to deliver my camera at that time ;)
4. In an ideal world, patents would have a financial ceiling applied to them.

Once you've made, say, $500m dollars of profit from it then it would be the decent thing to do to say "OK, I've been sufficiently rewarded for that now"

I can't think of any invention where anyone could have put enough effort in to creating it where $500m profit wouldn't be sufficient reward.

I reckon that after I'd made about $50m from something then I wouldn't really be crying into my beer if someone else took it on ;)
5. I'm suspicious about whether this is something not only to do with Samsung's presence in the mobile device market but as much to do with its dominant position in the TV market.

I wonder whether this is Apple's way of asserting itself when it moves into the TV market (in an integrated way not with the external Apple TV device) or even giving themselves some leverage for a collaboration with Samsung (as in lets swap that $1bn settlement for commercial services).

Ironic that one of Apple's driving forces was breaking the Microsoft monopoly and in now trying to create one of their own the main beneficiary as an alternative will be Microsoft.
6. Apologies if you know this already, but if you are looking for more reviews, you should search for 'Samyang' as this is the brand name used for them in Europe.

I've got the 85 and the 24.

Can't really complain about the performance or value of either (although the 24 is relatively 'expensive' is Samyang terms so doesn't seem as much of a steal as the 85).

Andrew did an extensive review of the 24 on here earlier this year with interesting comparisons between it and the the alternative from Sigma

7. Re: the licensing.

I agree that its a bit of a strangely specific thing for CVP to put in an email off their own bat.

You would have to suspect its something that they have been told by a BMD rep, possibly as a cack handed attempt at reassurance that the delay is something administrative and finite and that the units are ready to go rather than an open ended 'we'll ship them as soon as they stop catching fire' type of deal.

They've definitely put the U and the D into FUD with this one.

Not the F though.

At least for now.
8. Mmmmm......Appears that the delay is just of your common or garden "it doesn't quite work properly" variety.

Oh well at least I was right about it not being an issue with a licensing fee !

Blackmagic reassures customers over camera delay

15 August, 2012

[background=transparent]Shipments of Blackmagic Design’s eagerly anticipated Cinema Camera have been delayed.

The 2.5K device, which was unveiled at NAB earlier this year, was meant to ship in July.
Blackmagic EMEA senior PR manager Patrick Hussey said the camera would be delivered to customers by the end of the month.
“We are making a few tweaks because we want to make sure we release a quality product, not substandard kit,” he said.
“The reality of the situation is that a four-week delay is not an awful lot, particularly when you consider that delays to products from other manufacturers can be much more substantial.”
Hussey declined to provide more information about the “final round of tweaks”, but he said suggestions from some resellers that the delay related to third party licencing issues were incorrect.
“There are no problems there and Thunderbolt approvals have been granted.
“All products go through a quality assurance process and we’re just making sure everything is nailed down.”

9. Another delay then.

10. Pity someone from Benro hasn't thought about combining their fold flat legs with the self levelling head from their new tripod as it would be a pretty compelling combo for something like a GH2.

11. The cheapo generic ones are sticky backed on the frame so can probably be removed with a bit of care and chemicals at a later date.

On the HX9V you lose nothing at the sides and a slither of top and bottom but this doesn't impact what you can see of the imaging area obviously as that is letterboxed anyway.

Another advantage of the cheapo ones are that they weigh a lot less so there shouldn't be an issue of it pulling the frame off.

@ kitchentable -This is attached to the front of the collapsing lens, right? Are you sure the weight isn't going to be a problem? Is the whole lens mechanism robust enough to bear a variable ND (especially one that will be turned)?
And I would still like to know if anyone has managed to mount a Zacuto finder on this...
Yes, attached to the front of the lens.

The Cokin holder is plastic and weighs next to nothing. Ditto the resin filters.

Cokin do a holder for compact cameras that attaches via the baseplate if you just want to have a way of putting their NDs and CPs etc in front of it and don't want to disfigure the camera.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cokin-Digi-Holder-Cat-BAD700/dp/B0000AQ4N1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344009102&sr=8-1

With the Lightcraft mounted there is no impairment of the lens movement or apparent reduction in speed.

One interesting side effect of having the Lightcraft mounted is that, for me and my compact hands, I can find quite a nice balance point under the lens for hand holding.

I don't know about mounting an actual Zacuto but one of the generic cheapo ones with the magnetic mount should be fine. I've got one somewhere that I used with an HX9V that I'll dig out.
13. Picked one of these up last week but not really had too much time to test it.

However, I have addressed the filter thread issue in a way that might be too extreme for some but here it is anyway.

I looked at the magnetic option and as clever as it is, it is let down by the fact that there doesn't seem to be any info regarding a release date and I didn't fancy just having this thing in a box waiting for that to arrive.

Before doing what I did, I rationalised it by asking myself two questions :

1) Did I envisage a time when I wouldn't want this camera to have a filter thread
2) Did I envisage selling it and if so to someone who would be put off by it having a filter thread.

The answer to both was a pretty firm No so I pressed ahead with my not particularly hi tech solution of adding a permanent filter thread with the aid of a step up convertor and some super glue.

As luck would have it, I had a 46mm-52mm step up convertor and the 46mm end is pretty much the perfect diameter to fit the lens housing of the RX100 and only adds a few mm of extra appendage to the camera. One advantage to that is that it does add a little bit of protection to the actual lens glass which is no bad thing.

So, I now have an RX100 with a perfectly serviceable 52mm filter thread.

I've found the Cokin A series system to be a good add on for something like the RX100 as it gives you a slot for a circular polariser and three more slots for NDs and Grad NDs etc so its pretty flexible.

As the A series are pretty compact, it also feeds into the cinema camera in your pocket vibe !

Another big advantage is that they are reasonably cheap (particularly "compatible" ones such as 4 x ND at less than £20 on ebay) and you also often find people selling an entire collection on ebay for a bargain price.

Of course I'm not just limited to using the Cokin system, so I just add the 52mm-77mm step up and can use my Lightcraft variable ND as well.

So, there you go, it might be sacrilege for some to start permanently disfiguring a brand new camera but I think the ends justify the means in this case as it makes it useable now rather than at some unknown point in the future and at less than a fiver you certainly can't argue with the price ;)

... And all the laughable comments on RedUser about how the delay is the best news since the dawn of film?
It reminds me of the Life Of Brian over there, if Jannard made an announcement telling them all to fuck off they'd be posting "How shall we fuck off, oh Lord?" within seconds.
