  1. Hi Kays. Nice post thanks for sharing. If I manufactured the camera I would find your review pleasing. There are answers to your questions I'm sure most wouldn't find to be a deal breaker. Especially if looking for a camera with RAW capabilities, you have a bunch of c mount glass and can grade the heck out of it. You liked the image so thats certainly a plus, the other short comings may not be as problematic for some. The non removable battery jssue, that's too bad, I actually like a smaller form factor. Even in this day and age there is no perfect camera, and I agree my hats off to Joe and Elle for pulling it off, inspiring to say the least. Thanks
  2. I'm going the 4k route for the higher bit rates, flexibility in post, overall a more manipulatable palate. Don't get me wrong, correct me if I am, but I would still rather have a more robust 1080 image than a weak, thinned out version of 4k any day. I think 4k is going to be as definitive as 1080 is regarding consumer specs vs perfessional. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'd shoot a video on an Sony F3 S-log 444 before the Sony ax-100 or whatever it's called. I find myself using the BM pocket cam more than my fs700 for that reason, the difference is huge in terms of gradability and latitude. Don't get me wrong, for slo mo and low light the fs700 it's great, for that alone I might keep it, however the BMPCC is dream to use vs the Sony....12 bit RAW vs 8 bit AVCHD, be careful, RAW is addicting. :)
  3. Great review. You answered a Iot of questions. I love my pocket camera. I was on the fence about what to get, the canon version or Nikon version of the Sigma 16-35. The reason being, I wanted to use it on the 4k version when it comes out and I have the fs700 too. But Im pretty sure I'll go with the Nikon version for the sake of the Speedbooster. While I do like the build quality I'm wondering if anyone noticed the lens release button seems to have play but doesn't effect any performance. The pin works, locks great, they press and depresses perfect. I just noticed this tiny rattle and found it to be the lens release button. Should I call them about this? If its normal then I don't mind it, if not I'd like to get it fixed. Thanks
  4. Looks great. Sorry if it's a dumb question but is it a true single focus system? Thanks.
  5. Hi Andrew great test, thanks. Having just got the BMPCC I was happy to see the black orb and blooming was addressed however, (with my lumix 14-42 f3.5) in low light instances I've noticed this "vertical noise pattern" that seems to be attached to the sensor. It looks like a transparent linen fabric swatch in front of the lens. I made a video showing the issue and put it on Vimeo, compression seemed to hide it a little but it's there. You can download the origional. Anyone with info please feel free to share, I call the BM folks (US) and sent them a link to the video along with a screen grab. Thanks, I'll keep you posted only findings. https://vimeo.com/77426950
  6. https://vimeo.com/72391838 The first real world test I just came across.
  7. I'm still torn on buying the convergent design recorder. The Sony solution is definitely out, that things ridicules. I'm leaning heavily towards another camera and just keep the fs700 at 1080p and for high speed (when needed, like never) and grab a hyperdeck to maximize the weak 8-bit. s-log. Its a shame Sony could've ruled the market, but they're in for a rude awakening in the next couple years with new cameras coming out. Canon looks like its headed in the same direction.
  8. Nice reedzsu, i just picked up for the BMPCC Kern paillard 16mm 1:2.8 YVAR C-Mount AR Wollensak 1" f1.9 (25mm) Wollensak 17mm f2.7 Gonna tryout these guys out too, not sure will be good for pocket camera but I want to try shooting anamorphic. Hypergonar H. Chretien 16mm Benoist-Berthiot STOP Anamorphic Kowa Vidoscope Anamorphic Lens 16-Super-16mm 2X
  9. I agree, footage looks great so far, what sold me was prores/RAW and the small form factor. I hope I never need to touch the GH2 again, but for such measly specs (avchd) the GH2 is still a remarkable camera hacked or not. Owning an fs700 has taught me well, latitude is everything. Never again will I settle for such a low bit rate camera. I can't even justify buying into their 4k offering even with the odysseyQ. I'd rather tryout the BMPC instead. Looks like I'll be waiting a while for that one so hopefully the pocket camera will hold us over.
  10. It looks good for shooting out of the pocket, will look better in a controlled environment but I see no reason to ditch the GH2 just yet. On my Vimeo feed the gh2 footage holds up just as good as anything else out there. (just about anyway) If I end up with a pocket camera (have an order in on one) I'm looking to shoot RAW with a slew of vintage glass. I'm collecting some pieces now. I'm loving the authenticity of the image using vintage glass. We if we get close to a S16 image in such a small form factor I'll be happy. Hell, it's only a 1,000 bucks for a RAW shooter. I think the BMPC 4k will show us what direction BM is headed. Hope they ship soon...thanks
  11. Wow tons of wollensak 17mm f2.7 on eBay. Seems reasonably priced but at what cost? Slight vingenette I can handle, being an f2.7 does anyone think focus might not be as bad as f1.5 etc? I'm going for that vintage, contrasty, dated look with the pocket cam. I don't feel terribly good about the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 though maybe be a great lens, I just feel something better has to be on its way. Thanks. Just waiting as patiently as I can (like the rest of us) ha Best, Anthony And great post, this site never ceases to amaze. Thanks
  12. Talking with my dealer, he said his Dist can't give a definitive date and there's a huge back log so he doesn't think he'll see one till late Aug or even September. As far as b&h is concerned I'm figuring BM gave them a tease to appease their customer base to buy some Time. Could be mistaken but Wooden camera had one to show off their new pocket camera rig but didn't include any footage, I found that pretty strange. Thanks
  13. What a great forum here, such a wonderful and timely article. In researching what lens are best suited for the pocket cam (I always check here first, ha) i came across this and I like to say thanks...with that said I ordered the pocket cam today (us) and my dealer said there's no info when they're shipping. He's calling this week so I'll keep you all posted on what he comes back with. Not that I'm in a rush and I agree it'll be worth the wait. Am I correct to think with some lenses we'll be able to use image stabilization? Heard some good news about auto focus, any insight on future firmware updates? At 10 bits it must have a pretty powerful processor, that could leave some room for even more improvements down the road. Thanks
  14. An incredible achievement indeed. I think it sounds like a winner, the more I'd be able to accomplish on set, the happier I'd be. Seems great, set exposure for each scene, add your lut and bam...less time in post. Maybe I'm wrong but I would have to think it's the best way to get maximum dynamic range out of the camera. You can see it on set and light accordingly. Idk, it looks great and seems pretty reasonable. I'll have my eye out. Thanks
  15. This is certainly welcomed news to me and hope anyone else with an fs700. Glad Sony is being reasonable with us. My question is does the propriety SSD's record singular as in raid0 or can both SSDs hold media? Are 2-240 GB SSD 480 GB of footage or just 240? Thanks! Great info and coverage this year.
  16. What's our vector Victor? Great article, well written on such a complicated subject. I get it and think wow! No more tiresome 2k 4k or 8k talk. Thanks
  17. Great review, insightful and wow! what a great product. Wonder what took them so long? Thanks
  18. Wait till you BMCC guys start shooting at night. You better light your set up like a xmas tree. Talk about noise! At 3000.00 I can see why it's so popular on these type of blogs bashing cameras that cost considerably more. Make no mistake about it, for docs, run and gun, etc, in a professional enviornment the fs700 with a pix or samurai will blow the doors off the BMCC. Image wise the BMCC (under the right conditions) has a beautiful image but in a profeasinal setting I'll take the feature set of the fs700 over the BMCC any day. It's certainly a great little camera for 3000.00, but it's far from the holy grail some of you make it out to be. It does look great when used under the right conditions but so does a lot of other cameras with far less workarounds.
