1.
An exploded view of the A99 at Photokina Whilst I was able to record some footage from the Sony A99 at Photokina I didn't really have any spare time to do much with one. The camera to me seems a little bit disappointing on the image quality front with line skipping resulting in quite heavy moire and aliasing. Not acceptable in 2012. Johnnie (who I had the pleasure of finally meeting at Photokina) is a freelance BBC cameraman and editor based in Vienna. His comments on the new A99 are mixed (as are my feelings about the camera).
I agree. The 5D Mark ii was introduced in September 2008. 4 years later, and the video quality, in DSLRs, is exactly the same, albeit some minor, cosmetic changes. Also, the XLR Adapter for US$800 is INSANE. Sony seems to be going the Canon way, producing DSLRs with lousy video quality, at exorbitant prices. Maybe, they should just scrap the video, Altogether, instead of consistently trying to fool consumers.

Also, the Canon 5D Mark iii and the Sony A99 are double the price of the Panasonic GH3 (or more). If video is a necessary governing (factor for) price point, then, they should offer a $1000 discount, without any fuss, on both the Sony AND the Canon.
2. There is a certainly kind of earnest curiosity, in your questions. I guess, a lot of people on this forum (including me, sometimes), believe that they are too elementary, at times, but, please don't let it bother you.
I have worked in a few features, and we had a DoP/ Cinematographer, with about 30 years of experience (or more), who, more than once, missed shadows, and bills on trees, in the frame. Though, he was broad-shouldered enough to admit his folly, the moral of the story is, no one is perfect :)
The length of the time left, on the card, depending on the MB rate, you are shooting at.

I dont have the kit lens, i just got the 20mm pancake with the gh2 body. Would it be stupid to have the 20mm and the 14mm pancake?

And I think I would go maybe for a little higher quality than the 14mm panny, just based on my research with its bad low light. Any other suggestions? HOw do the 14mm panny and the Rokinon 14mm compare? THe panny is 300 dollars cheaper on ebay, and has f.2.5 compared to the rokinon f.2.8..

Thanks again.

If you already have the 20mm f1.7, get a fast 50mm Nikon or Canon (from ebay), with an adaptor. It will be cheap and the optics are quite good.
4. Ok, Unless you are Einstein, with electronics, PLEASE don't try this at home (or anywhere else):

<Deleted incorrect information!>

Edit: Looks like I was totally wrong about this! The GH1 and GH2 have the same multi-aspect sensor. Check out this for the real story on the GH3 sensor:

Ok, this means, that, like almost all other Camera Manufacturers out there (Nikon, Canon, Sony etc etc), the GH3 will create an approx 22% size reduction, in Stllls for 16:9 size pics, and an approx 7% reduction, in Stills for 3:2 pic size. If everyone else is doing it, then, maybe, it doesn't seem so bad ... :P
6. Wow, I am so glad, that people are using the GH2 for some great documentary work. Also, quite creative.
Your documentary, though, seems a little heavy, on the eyes. Partially due to the focus (you haven't focused properly, and on the right object, in the right sequence of shots), and, maybe, partially, due to the fact, that your camera is, possibly handheld, and, in some curious ways, it shows. Maybe you needed to stabilize the shots. I guess, you could still do it, in post.
7. ALL HACKS (with NO exception), disable a few of the features of the GH2, and most of them, cause the video to hang, under certain conditions. While some hacks only support the 30 MBps cards, other support the 45 MBps cards, and still other ONLY support 95 MBps cards. Its a conspiracy of the Hackers and the Card Manufacturers. :D
8. iDynamic is apparently, a bad idea, for shooting video. I read, at quite a few places, that, the iDynamic function, makes the video create more noise (more grainy, in darker spots). Though, there have been very few actual videos, documenting this. This is one video, which does document it (though, from the looks of things, this could very easily have been cause, by the ISO Bug, or even due to the high contrast, at lower ISO, a little like the noise, in the video, in which Andrew testes the new SLR Magic lenses). I dunno. I don't use it, because I did earlier, and, I did not notice any difference. Also, one of the hacks (don't remember which one), said that the iDynamic has to be turned off, when the hack is installed.

P.S.: Btw, Andrew, I Really liked the train shot, in your SLR Magic Lens testing video, where you have inter-cut 2 shots, of the train, from 2 different angles, and then changed the focus from the train, to the fence, in the 2nd shot. Maybe, I'll use it for something ;)
9. The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is a fixed focal length lens, meaning, that you cannot zoom in. The advantage that it offers, over a zoom, is that, you can get prime lenses, which are very fast (meaning, that they are very bright). This is great for indoor, or night shooting.

Thought, I haven't tried any video or other tutorials, myself (I read a lot of articles, by various users, from Cinematographers, to Bloggers, to regular users, apart from checking various videos on Vimeo and YouTube), maybe, these will be helpful:

Btw, do NOT use the 20mm f1.7, with Autofocus, for video. Its too slow. Otherwise its a nice and fast lens, and very good, for the price. Best of Luck, with your new cam.

35mm 1.4 for around $300, Im very interested in getting. Just hope the color fringe isn't too bad.
Seriously, amazing pricing.
The lenses are not available for order till December 2012 for the 35mm T1.4 and Feb 2013 for the 35mm T0.95. By then the website will be updated with the new products.

This lens seems damn promising. And, I hope the purple fringing has gone/ greatly reduced
11. The whole problem with the Canon DSLRs was that they could resolve only about half the lines, of the GH2, and therefore, they were not packing in enough details. I don't believe the Nikons will be any better, whether they say 4-2-0 or 4-2-2 chroma sub-sampling. Whether you get the Ninja or any other HDMI recorder, I don't believe it will make much of a difference.
Not to mention all the aliasing and moire.
12.
please do share with me the footage you have seen that demonstrate higher dynamic range than on the gh2.
all I have personally seen are blown highlights and crushed blacks.

supposedly better codec but now has aliasing and moire so worse end image quality.
some of you guys say firmware might fix this...ok let's find out in due time I guess

really? The only low light shots I've seen where the ones on reverie. And I don't know if you have downloaded the 1080p version but it shows heavy dirty color noise. The french guys vid is just bad looking and has no download option anyways so can't judge from the video compression.

All of the post I've seen from people being happy about the upgrade are only parroting the specs sheet.
Yes the specs sheets on paper are nice but I have personally not yet seen them translate to quality footage.
That is all that matter.
Remember a camera that has poor spec sheets but has great image quality?
Yeah the gh2.
Some of the videos doing the round, have the 14-140 lens, which is really not the lens for low light (the darker corners of the Photokina Panasonic Hall), if that is one of the videos you are referring to.

Also, like I mentioned before (and so did someone else), the Panny lenses produce some crazy moire and aliasing.

From what I've seen, I am a little disappointed with the video quality, on the GH3, as well. But, maybe, we should wait, till people get their hands on the GH3, and use non-panny lenses, along with faster lenses, in low light conditions.
13. One complaint I've always had about the GH2, was the mediocre still photo quality. I saw this on Imaging Resource, and I feel, that the GH3 may have noticeably better photo quality. Some of the pics are seriously amazing.

Hi fellow filmmakers,

I'd like to get slow-motion images of the brushes falling vertically before the lens, spinning and bouncing on the ground in full shot and medium closeup (sort of this in video slow-motion : http://vimeo.com/10109873). In order to get a sharp enough focus, I have to set the shutter speed high, but I loose light and must therefore increase the iso. The result as you've already guessed is too much noise. I'm using a 7d at 60 fps and two kino lights in a studio, and then I slow the images down using twixtor in final cut.

- What settings would you use in order to do this shot ? The brushes don't have to be perfectly in focus I guess, but the image should be clean enough.
- Do I really have to increase the shutter speed or should I stay around 1/60 ? Could I go lower ?

I look forward to reading your suggestions,
Thanks !
Ernest

You didn't mention the ISO you're shooting at. Or the shutter speed. Also, Canon DSLR videos are already so soft. Why would you wanna soft focus it?
