A Chinese Weibo user who knows Sony Semi stuff said they developed a 5k sensor with 14bit readout and DCG, for next gen A7S/FX3; and the next day this rumor appeared. Probably somebody thought its perfect for S1Hii. The only thing certain about this sensor is that it's expensive.

The h.265 itself is not the problem. Its that you can't turn off the NR with h.265, and in low light its too much. Nikon didn't change this even after all firmware updates they did for Z9/Z8/Z6III, so its safe to say its not going to happen with Expeed 7. Probably because power consumption will be noticeably higher if the encoder has to compress noisy image.

Among all the firmware requests by YouTubers and RED shooters, this one was almost out of the radar. Which tells me is an indirect response to whining about raw file sizes. Which means an internal lower bitrate R3D NE became even less likely.

If you gain something in SN ratio, sure you lose something in details. Its almost impossible to extract "true" 4k bayer from 6k bayer.

ZR 4k raw is not line skipped. Its read out speed is the same as 6k raw. So it uses the whole pixels, but some kind of digital downconversion happens that has SN ratio of 3k image but resolution of 4k image, with a downside of some high frequency aliasing.

Nikon gave this camera to so many different people I wonder how they did even find them. Some just have 500 followers, but are locally known in their country. Maybe Jarred Land is behind this.

Then it should be a lot noisier, even with baked in NR. I guess Apple embedded a brightness map metadata, like they did for gain map in HDR Jpeg XL, so raw data stays intact but displayed darker in underexposure shot.

There is almost no noise difference between the base and -3. If there would be no penalty for underexposure, thats not underexposure. Maybe it darkens the image without changing the exposure parameters while reporting otherwise. You can test that with a moving subject.

I understand people are excited that we now have some flexibility to color grade our smartphone image like its a cine cam, but why you go so extreme? 😄 I call it "i can't see shit" contrast.

Video oriented cameras is always a niche. Especially in this economy and what we see in AI developments. Look at this pretty serious response of a pro video shooter: I predict two years from now many of these folks will just give up. Budgets are already so low that they're bean counting the price of CFe cards they have to buy.

Nikon and Panasonic to be precise 😉 But its not new thing. Shilltubers have been like this for years. What I find interesting is.. what Canon engineering are doing exactly? I mean how you get 1 stop lower DR on a BSI sensor, compared to a semi stacked sensor known for its low DR?

Canon managed to make a slower sensor than ZR sensor, twice the price, with less DR.

Why they're using the word "switching" so much? Why should anyone switch? You just add the camera to the rest of your gears if it works for you well. Especially with such an adaptable mount. Its all speculation, but it makes sense to switch from 12bit to 14bit in Super35 mode. The main reason almost all cameras are at 12bit in full frame video is basically power consumption. But in crop modes, they have to deal with less resolution, so the total consumption stays low. There is also another theory. Canon is known for applying NR to the raw video. Maybe the CPU is not powerful enough to apply the same amount of NR applied to Super35, to the 7k image, or if it does, there will be overheating/power consumption issues. Or maybe we're reading too much between the line and the official spec table has incorrect number and will be edited soon.

Not trying to jump into your apparently long discussion, but EXACT look of Full Frame can be achieved on M43, but you need faster lens, and once you go that fast, the lens becomes so big and heavy that the size advantage of the M43 format loses its relevance at that point. But the difference between 44mm wide sensor and 36mm wide sensor is far less than FF and M43. Its basically f/1.2 vs. f/1.4. And at the same time, lens makers of the two systems went opposite direction. FF lenses are now bigger and faster than 44mm MF lenses, cause FF systems want to differentiate themselves from low end cameras, even at the expense of size/weight, while MF systems want to break the collective mindset that MF=Bulky/Inconvenient.

It would be funny if turns out RED and Nikon couldn't push Davinci developers to address the issue with nraw rendering and decided to fix it themselves by a metadata trick.

Yea, and I suggested considering NRAW normal as R3S LQ. But you have to be careful about base ISOs.
