  1. I know what you mean, it feels too fiddly and fragile when compared to a Canon brick, but with the RX100 I'm taking pictures again, it's always with me, and the 7D always stayed home, except for planned shoots.   The Canon image does have its special something though, regardless of soft image, alias, and whatever everybody keeps bitching about, there's a reason why most people keep choosing them over anything else out there. I have my hopes on the 7DmkII, even though the 5dmk3 upgrade could be awesome if they want it to...
  2. You're right, some people have managed to go above that a little bit, but I was mistaking it with something else.
  3. Don't want to piss on anyone's parade here, but shooting a burst of raw images is hardly the same as shooting video for even just a few minutes. The fact that the sensor can do that for 1 second does not mean it can do it for longer periods of time without heating up or even dying forever. And assuming it did last for hours working at that speed, image quality could degrade over time, and everything in the camera would need to be updated to keep up with the data and heat. I don't think the same camera could shoot that kind of quality video for the same price or even 3x more if Nikon had wanted to, it's very different things, and a lot would need to change with the camera. No doubt camera companies are not giving us as much as they could/should, but this feels like a bit of a stretch in optimism. The BMCC sensor can do 60fps and global shutter, and still they didn't go with it, probably due to image quality issues and heating problems in those modes. Personally I'd love it if they gave the users the option to choose the shooting mode (global vs rolling shutter), regardless of image quality, but they didn't give the users much choice at all with this camera. They didn't have to, I guess that was one of the perks of being the only $3k cinema camera in the market. The 7D shoots up to 20fps 10fps raw images per second with the fastest cards and it has a mechanical shutter, imagine what it could do with an electronic one, if Canon wanted to...
  4. I haven't tried it on videos yet, but even for stills, I think it's only useful for non moving subjects. What it does is it takes a burst of images and blends them all together, so if your subjects are moving the image gets blurred/ghosted.   It takes a while to save the stills like this, so I don't think it would do exactly the same in video mode. Will need to do some tests, but maybe all it does when shooting videos in SAM is use different settings?
  5. If everyone's patient and quiet, how will they be aware of the issues? It's a petition, if you don't find it important then don't sign it, ignore it, move on. If enough people do sign it though, it might shift their priorities, most companies do care about keeping their customers happy, and we're talking about a simple software upgrade, not a cumbersome hardware change that would affect manufacturing. If they don't want to do it then they won't, but the least one can do is try to open up a dialogue, nobody's saying it's a bug that needs to be fixed, nobody's demanding them to do anything, he's just asking nicely, why all the hate?
  6. It sounds great, but it looks terrible :)   The sensor is just too small, if an 8mm lens becomes as long as it appears in the video, there's no way you're going to get any wide shots out of it. Also, the rolling shutter is terrible even at 8mm, so imagine using longer lenses.   I'm sure it will be useful in very specific situations, but definitely not as cool as it may seem at first.   Now a GoPro with a 16mm sized sensor and a C-Mount would be something else!
  7. Could be because of the interlaced file, have you tried de interlacing first? Could also be the shutter speed you're using. 50p will definitely look smoother, but not necessarily more cinematic. As for the NR features, I don't use them, I'd rather do it in post if I really need it than have damaged footage because of it.
  8. Nice one, but I would leave Steady Shot in standard mode by default, Active mode crops too much out of an already small sensor. I'd save it for situations where more extreme stabilizing is required.
  9.   The cameras could turn out to be pretty bad, or not work at all, and they could decide to can the entire project, then no one would get a camera. It's a possibility on any project of this nature, backers should be ready for it.   However, if they do finish the camera and deliver the 100 or so kickstarter pre orders, then I don't see why they wouldn't keep going. They're probably not making any profit with the first cameras, but once all the R&D is complete, making more of them is much easier and quicker, and that's what would start creating some profits for them.   I agree 260k is not much for a project and team of this size, but you're assuming that's all they've got. They've said before they have a silent partner/investor, it's not just the two of them running the company. Also, they're working with another company for all the electronics, etc. and it's possible that they're working at a cost or even at a loss in trade for a share of the profits in future sales. These are all common practices in startups such as this one.   Then again, this is all speculation, I have no insider information, and as far as I'm concerned it could turn out to be a success or a failure, no way to tell, but none of it strikes me as grim as many seem to make it.
  10.   There you go again... where do you know me from to make such an assumption and even finishing with "without exception"? When have I even mentioned "anything can be shown"?   I'm talking about artistic freedom to CREATE!   Distribution channels such as TV channels, cinemas, art galleries have their say in whether or not and when to show such creative works.   If you wouldn't like to see Cannibal Holocaust on BBC at 4pm (and I know I wouldn't), then your problem should be with the BBC, not the artists.   Setting rules and laws in our society as to when, where and how to show strong contents is one thing, censoring and forbidding artists from producing them in the first place is something completely different, and totally unacceptable.   I'll stop feeding you now, have a great life.
  11.   As any good artist should.     Being in favor of artistic freedom is not the same as glorifying depraved art, why are you twisting things?
  12.   So you find artistic freedom sickening, you think art should be censored and tamed according to your own moral values. That's not sickening at all.     You got us, game over!     Judging by the big sign saying DJANGO UNCHAINED in most local cinemas, we already did! :)
  13. Yes, that's what freedom means, if that's what he wants, of course he's got all the right to do it, it's just a film. It doesn't mean I'd defend or agree with it, and it certainly doesn't mean I'd become a serial killer for watching it.
  14.   That wasn't your question. Your question was regarding an hypothetical Tarantino film with Ted Bundy as a hero, to which I responded. Nothing I said implies I'm up for censorship in any situation, if that's the story some filmmaker wants to tell, let him go for it, it's up to him, not you or me to decide against it.   So who's twisting what here?     Like you had a lot to say regarding Django's anamorphic cinematography... seriously.
  15.   Not necessarily, the more they sell the less it costs to make them, and the more profit they will be making, so they could absorb the licensing costs, if that's what they decide. Or come up with a paid upgrade. I'm sure most people who use the cameras for serious shooting wouldn't mind paying for an upgrade that adds cineform compressed raw and prores, for instance.
  16.   I'm not agreeing with censorship, and I'm also not reading a camera forum because of your craving for it or your moral ramblings, but maybe that's just me.     It is absurd not to see those lines are constantly blurred. I don't need to twist anything to make you look absurd, you've been doing a pretty good job at it yourself!     He was no different than Dexter, he had his own moral code, he didn't go out scalping just anyone, he did it out of revenge, and in the context it was satisfactory to the audience. That was a parallel world where we got to get some revenge against the nazis for once, it's movie escapism, not historical inaccuracy.     Of course my argument is with you, you're the one talking crap here, who else would I be arguing with?   Over and out.
  17.   I recommend you read up on what's really going on and what the VFX issues are.   VFX companies are not blaming directors, even though it wouldn't hurt for VFX films' directors to actually know a thing or two about VFX.   The problem is the business model, how studios take the work to tax havens and force every company and workers to move with it, how they force VFX facilities to underbid and work at a loss, how they don't credit the artists who worked on the films, and no it's not caused by bad management, it's the nature of the industry and the overall disrespect it gets from the studios.   http://www.facebook.com/VfxSolidarityIntl         You'd be surprised at how much of the shot composition and editing in VFX sequences is actually done by the VFX companies, and many times after the DP is done with shooting the film and already off shooting another project.   And let's get this straight: YOU DON'T GET A CINEMATOGRAPHY OSCAR FOR LIGHTING A FLAT GREENSCREEN!   Tell me of a single DP that actually light his film's greenscreens... that's technical work, not artistic.     Both Ang Lee and Claudio Miranda were quite ungrateful during their speeches. They both tried to make up for it backstage, but backstage is just not the same thing, is it? Especially in a moment where the VFX industry really needs serious changes and all the attention it can get.
  18.   That was not the point. Digital Bolex would pay for it themselves in order to make their product more competitive, just not at a time when they're only selling 100 cameras. If this camera succeeds and production ramps up, then they could easily justify such an expense, but I understand them not doing that just yet.   They have included HDMI though, which also requires developers to pay an annual fee.   BMD didn't include an HDMI port, maybe because of this, but they did license Prores, it's a matter of strategy I guess.   IMO I'd rather have the hardware in place and then focus on firmware updates, even if they're paid, than having crippled hardware to begin with.
  19.   Nothing Tarantino ever did would lead me to expect such a film from him. That's an absurd question.   Tarantino's film morals are perfectly acceptable, as far as I know none of his films are supposed to be a documentary, none of his films is supposed to portray actual facts, they're fiction pieces taking place in a world that could be ours, but it's not. They are far from realistic or factual, but somehow you still can't understand it, and I can't understand you still going on about it when you haven't even seen the bloody film, how daft is that???   You keep talking crap on a thread about Django's cinematography when you haven't even seen the film, wtf!!!     Are they? So if a perfectly good person gets bit and turns into a vampire, they're suddenly evil? I'm being very repetitive here, and tired of it, but there's no such thing as good and evil, the lines ARE blurred, nothing's that basic in real life, and when art is that basic, it's dull and boring, and IMO, not really worth being called art at all.
  20. Cineform could be added as a firmware upgrade, but in order to support Cineform they'd have to pay for a licence, since it's not an open format, and that's probably not something they will do yet, not before they sell enough cameras to justify it. Anyway, it comes with enough connectivity options that you can record to any media or codec you fancy the most.
  21. A look at the spec list would clear all your doubts.   It does shoot 16:9 of course, 4:3 is an additional mode if you want to shoot anamorphic or plain 4:3. It's not a C-Mount camera, it's a replaceable mount camera, you can choose between C, PL, Canon EF, Micro 4/3...   One of the coolest things with these guys is the transparency with which they're developing the camera, all the specs are clearly listed on their website, their updates are very thorough and honest, I don't really get all these suspicious and constant questioning. I'd be a bit pissed off if it was me developing this camera and had to deal with all this crap, I must say. :)
  22. This is what SAM does:   http://esupport.sony.com/docs/dvimag/DSCRX100_guide/en/contents/02/03/03/03.html
  23.   Most likely yes, but the R&D and technology behind it can and probably will be somehow applied to upcoming video/cinema/stills sensors.
