  1. I'll remind you, the patronization started on your end.  It's not my fault I'm better at that than you as well.

Beyond that, I'm not skerr'd but I don't want to be really mean so I'll just leave it at that.

Well for the record I've been itching to comment on your lighting and shots as a ''DP'' for ''Sick Boy'' and rewind all the irony about ''cinematography.''  Or is it not your fault?  It's your lighting crew and direction huh?  Oh no wait it can't be that it's the post right!?  You're the VFX warrior with no flaw to making a first feature film?  So I'll just leave it at that and not say anything.

  2. He was not there and not involved in the real crafting of PI.  How daft are you to not get that?  How presumptuous are you to lecture anyone?

in filmmaking there's a process of pre-production, production, and then post.  I assume PI was just completely post and no camera involvement or lighting.  I see.  He wasn't ''there.'' I'm not the one being comedic.

  3. FYI, just got additional confirmation, Miranda was never involved at the facility during post production on PI.  All reviews of work were with Ang Lee, his editor and Bill Westenhofer, the R+H supervisor who got the shark at :45 on the program.

So, there you go, all the really really cool shit that happens in the movie and in the trailer to get you to go see it, yeah, Miranda had nothing to do with that.  Doyle is calling him out likely working under the assumption, same as most people giving Miranda the benefit of the doubt, that he was there working with the VFX team creating the world of PI.  That, he doesn't consider cinematography.

But it's worse than that, and this fact likely hasn't even crossed Christopher Doyle's mind.  I'm betting the notion that a whole team of people he'll never meet are going to step in to actually craft the look and feel of a film his name is attached to would make his head explode, or he just might find new and interesting ways to tell everyone to "fuck off."  That's what Miranda did.

Other people crafted the film in his absence and he took credit for it.  He had that moment, that Brady Bunch or Growing Pains or Diff'rent Strokes moment to do the right thing and say, "shit, fellas, I was off playing X-Box or getting laid while these other guys finished the movie."  But he didn't, or at least hasn't yet.

You might want to intern with a pro gaffer just to understand the importance of lighting and then re-look at Miranda's past on Fincher's films.  Gaffer's are dope.  So now Miranda in his later career takes full seat as a DP and knows how to execute 3D (which he has deserved as we're moving to more digital creative territory) and you complain with no pro set experience with lighting?

  4. You know what Leang That's exactly what I intend to do! If Miranda can get an oscar for lighting greenscreens then I too am in with a chance as I too can light them.

I'm glad most of you think it's all about lighting green screen.  I think most of you should watch the film about 10 times and then revise every shot if you can...  from story boarding to shot sequence to match exposure to framing and then composition and then lastly ''green screen.''  all that aside from match moving and post.  it's cute to think it's all easy but at the end of the day it's the same reason why I thought ''Hugo'' should've won best picture, to see what experienced crews are doing with 3D to home screening.  it's all marketing and 2012 has passed.  non of that is taking account of...so many of you can wonder off to the times of ''Lawrence of Arabia,'' blah blah, but in the real world of filmmaking and the next years to come it is what it is.  the worst thing is to theorize about technique from a non cinema scale when you're not doing it at that scale of production.  let the big dogs complain about it in their field, and in the mean time worry about how you can be successful for yourself.  most of you talk about cinematography as if you're ASC but let's be real...c'mon...let's be real...

if you guys are curious about political comedic cinematography watch Coppola's ''Twixt'' by DP Mihai Malaimare Jr., and then you'll rethink about ''Life of Pi.''  it's blatant cinematography improvised at an amateur level.  don't let purist cinematographers fuel you young generation kats...nor follow the ''Oscars''...

leave Miranda alone.  all this ''chilean born'' propaganda or ''wizard'' look is just a blatant example of American hate or sub textual racism in media as always...

  5. And let's get this straight:

YOU DON'T GET A CINEMATOGRAPHY OSCAR FOR LIGHTING A FLAT GREENSCREEN!

sure you most definitely can.  First off Miranda is already ASC, and as I already mentioned lighting green is extremely challenging and not generic weather report lighting as most think.  The point is not how to light green screen properly, it's who can pull off nice creative lighting for VFX - that's important!  DP's sit in the same room when revising the color grade.  It's not like DP's just randomly shoot a ''correct exposure'' and expect a colorist to make the magic happen.  Ang Lee has his own unique style of directing, and it's not like these directors just walk away and expect post production to be the foundation for any accomplishment.  Ang Lee and Miranda work nicely together.

Sure it was just a boat and some animals...minimal...but far better lit and depth than Clash of the Titans.  Look at the camera work when the Indıan dives into the pool.  It's art!!   the blocking and staging along with camera tracking is hard.  I've done tracking.  It's not easy, and I highly respect the complexity of it.  Argo...generic lit.

How did 'Life Of Pi' win best Cinematography when its mainly CG ??? - come on!!
I will never understand that Roger Deakins was overlooked for Skyfall in this catagory.

I would look closer at the composition of the shots and how you tell a metaphorical tale from shot to shot. Its also not easy to light green consistently, look at the consistent color temperature and shadow detail. and it was not all CG... great film...Ang Lee is one of the best in the game in lens choice too, most DP's know this about him.
  7. You are a friggin' idiot.  I wasn't getting conservative, something I'm not. That's just an ignorant assumption based on where I live (or I should say, the State, because I live in a liberal, media conscious city that actually plays an important role in world music and film, unlike yourself).  My reaction was based on common sense.  Time and place.  I'd expect even a child to understand that, propagandist.

Why don't you try talking about the actual topic.

  8. Thanxs  - before reading your post JG I already decided for the 48 kHz 24-bit based on my readings and talks to others. But nice to hearyou have the same suggestion to ensure i made the right decision  B)

aside from general audible theory IT IS A FACT that you get far better results in cleaning audio at 24/96khz, especially with today's noise reduction plugins and applied FX within post.  this is why I mentioned the general benefit of higher hz if you consider optimized audio...and particularly from a Zoom device.  Also audio space is not an inconvenience today.  Maybe it was 7 years ago with the advent of recording multiple channels in a pro environment, but today hard disk space is of no concern especially if you're recording an interview.  lastly one of the main reasons why pro cams don't bother with higher hz from the built in mics is because it would technically record ''more'' (unwanted) internal noise!  It's even harder to understand without pro grade monitors.

  9. if you plan to do some surgical eq'ing in post to really punch out the voice or general noise correction then record in 24/96.  Those are the real benefits, but tbh the bit range and frequency can only do so much if it's not a high end converter to do serious post work.  with mid range to high end gear 24/96 handles correction better with more headroom in post, and in general recording.  I haven't kept up with web audio wrappers in years, but from what I remember most compressed video for web playback will still generally be 16/44, and you'll most likely publish to that.  always record in WAV

  10. I find that games are quite dangerous, but only because they provide stimulation and virtual reward with no real-life interaction, and that can be dangerous to the development of a disciplined and strong character, especially in interpersonal situations.

not only that but they stimulate simulated environments for the youth for easy military recruitment, war gaming and such. and that's easily a sub-minimal justification for the benefits of national security.  and If I'm not mistaken the gaming industry is far bigger than the film industry.  then you've got the ''states'' (in some states) trying to justisfy the right for gun control ownership to hunt game (with Michael Moore slapping faces) and then we wonder why teens or an individual can spray out heads at a Batman opening or at a local school.
