I used 600LED lights on this zero budget piece:

    https://vimeo.com/48174944

Plus some workman's LED lights in order to get the flicker in the performance room. In most situations such a flicker would be annoying, but promos tend to be about aesthetic, so it's a fun trick to desync the lights and shutter spped.

The 600LED lights don't flicker though, they're great.

I have a couple more vids in post. One of those has only 600 LED panel and reflectors. It was four-figure budget, we just spent it all on more important stuff ;)

Those lights seem great for the price, do they have a greenish tint that some chinese LED lights have?
  2. You could buy just the slider support mount from Lock Circle for $160.
    http://www.lockcircle.com/matbox/buy/

Might save yourself some hassle trying to do it yourself (I couldn't think of a good way to make one work).

Mosaic Engineering have their AA Filter for the D800 is now available.
$385, same price as the 5D2.

Hopefully there will be some tests posted on vimeo soon.

    GREAT NEWS!

  4. That's just completely stupid thinking EOSHD is propagating here. The D800 gives you excellent and filmic images. If you can't shoot with it, the BMC will not help you.

My issue wan't that I can't shoot well, it was that the BMC will allow you to correct your image IF you stuff up. I'm not a flawless cinematographer (maybe you are, I'd love to see some work), so that 'safety net' is great.
Have you tried to change the white balance in Prores? It looks fake, but in RAW it looks fine. And before you propose that stuffing up the white balance makes you less of a cinematographer, what about when you shoot underwater and then rise up above the surface, where it's a different colour temperature? Shane Hurlbut discussed this issue on his website. RAW would be able to fix that problem.

Also, I wasn't discrediting the D800 - it produces great images. I was however, commenting on the price. The D800 + Ninja 2 = $4000. Whereas the BMC is $3000. I felt 'silly' for paying $4000 for a camera which I've only been using for video, when I could pay $1000 less for a camera with more features, and as Andrew argues, a more professional camera too.

  5. Look at the day rate of a Red shooter, raw moves you the ladder in the eyes of a client. I know a lot of clients who are keen to avoid the DSLR kid look now having been stung before by a cack handed shooter clutching a Canon 7D.

Making cash as a photographer is a completely separate issue to making a living as a videographer.

If you cock up a shot with the 5D Mark III on a job you can't save it later. What if your white balance is off, or your exposure, or one shot doesn't match the other when you cut them together? Maybe you come back to do a re-shoot the next day and your exposure is different, then it doesn't match on the timeline - with a raw codec that isn't an issue. Far more safe.

Then there's the focus issues you get with a large sensor and clients really are getting tired of having their subject coming in and out of focus. On a smaller sensor again you have that extra safe margin.

I had never really thought about this issue until you posted it. Now I feel quite silly for buying a D800 (I haven't used it for as much stills as I thought I would). It'll be a while before I'll have the cash for a BMC.

  7. I looked at Edelkrone rigs but I thought they were too expensive for my budget, so I went the cheaper route.

This is my frankenrig which I've bought from ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/photoworldshop/Video-Photography-/_i.html?_fsub=157015319&_sid=190725419&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

Andrew's article about the follow focus (http://www.eoshd.com/content/3291/reviews-of-jins-affordable-dslr-video-rig-rails-and-follow-focus) is what led me to the seller's items.

I got the setup for a few hundred dollars and I've been very pleased with it so far. However, you do get what you pay for. When it arrived the thread on the rails wasn't machined properly so I had to file it down until it fit. So if you're comfortable with possibly having to do that then I say why not?
  8. Great timing for this post.
I've got a D800 that I've been using for video for a couple months now, only recording to SD cards, but this week my Ninja 2 and 2x Anamorphic lens arrived. I do need to get a clamp still, but I will post some footage ASAP so you can see what it's like. :D
  9. G'Day fellow Victorian,

I'd suggest Lemac in Richmond. http://www.lemac.com.au/Products/SonyNEX-FS700.aspx
They do rentals to the Australian film industry and are professional. You might be able to find a cheaper price online, but at Lemac you know they're gonna look after you.

    Cheers

Don't think any D800E video footage is out there yet. But it would almost certainly exaggerate the mild aliasing and moire issue of the D800 not having an anti-aliasing filter over the sensor.
It will be interesting to see how Nikon's post processing solution does. I don't recall seeing any info whether Capture NX2's moire correction will work on video. Does anyone know?

    Cheers
  11. Andrew, you say:
On actual 1080p resolution however they [Canon and Nikon] are unfortunately as bad as each other.
Are you just comparing the internal codec of both cameras or are you also including & comparing the D800's uncompressed HDMI out?

    Cheers
  12. Specs have been released along with a short film shot with the camera. Thoughts?
I've been researching for a video camera for a while now and this may be the one.
