  1. Nope just a bit tongue in cheek!   The show has only just begun in more ways than one.
  2. Or just begun!   http://bmcc.tv/blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera-market/   I get what you mean about the EF version though. Never an option for me.
  3.   Nice post Caleb,   I think its been really really hard to justify upgrading because of manufacturers playing customers for fools. My last proper camera was an EX1 and now just use a GH2 and wait until manufacturers treat customers properly or BMC gets theirs in the shops.
  4. Maybe there is an advantage for colour correction in 4k before you downsize to 2k or are you saying you want to make a film in 4k I think vimeo are making a 4k channel but what use is that when all laptop displays as far as I know are far less than that and how could you monitor 4k on a laptop screen and if you could would there be any advantage? As an indie film maker to get a film made in 2k is an incredible ask to do it in 4k seems like a ton of work for no reason as distributers would want your film in 2k. My TV is for the most part standard pal defination. There are some HD channels and the future But 4k is still a long way away and again will anyone be able to see a discernable difference in a normal sized living room and do people really want to see actors pores lines and spots in minute detail? Many female actors dread HD let alone 4k Maybe you can edit 4k on a laptop but is there actually a point to doing it and so far my camera of choice is the BMC 4k.
  5. Andrew. You are taking a different approach and I hope a better one. Your reporting of the 5D hack and how to implement it has been brilliant.
  6. So what did Bloom say about the hack? I thought it was positive but the complaint is that he hasn't done a story on what some regard as the the biggest thing since sliced bread It certainly is for those with a 5D but those without one and cash in their pocket its another choice in the RAW lower price range. What I think would be really helpful is to have some footage indoor outdoor of people in raw original format from both cameras Then we can get to work making proper comparisons with colour correction. instead of messing about watching colour graded stuff or sunsets or pretty porches with mixed tungsten lighting. All we need is two minutes of each one shot next to each other in the same location and then we can properly compare. Andrew?
  7. Amro Why did you write that? Seems like a waste of good internet space if you ask me. Everyone has an agenda of some kind. Andrew competes with Blooms site. So what We all have our favourites and vested interests. Where the conflict arises is when somebody is deceptive or when you get gurus who act like gods and trash the truth. There are websites who want you to praise the cameras their sponsors advertise and wont accept a bad word said about them and allow lies and deceptions from their members about them. That is annoying. But Phil Bloom doesn't do that. He does however give some very good reviews for FREE. So you can bypass the ads and get the facts. He is being called out over the 5D Hack but is that actually reality. What he has said so far has been fair. Those using this hack will have many problems that are just not there with the BMC. For the majority of stuff most will as things stand shoot prores. The only time you need raw is when you have no control over lighting. The 5D processes an incredible amount of data Maybe to much work for most. Hacking the 5D PROVES technology has been held back but it is not a game changer or the biggest thing ever. It is simply competition for the BMC Kineraw Digital Bolex all at the lower end of the scale. The footage from the 5D colour wise Looks amazing but after settling down a bit I don't believe it is as cinematic as the BMC. The colours I've seen so far tie in with their lenses Bright and perhaps oversaturated. The best that can be said is it is like having a new film stock. Having one minute films with bright and pretty colours will not neccesarily translate into a watchable feature. It's not about how pretty the image is its about the story The acting The lighting The emotion. Maybe the 5D is oversaturated and maybe the BMC is under so maybe through colour correction there is a middle ground they should both reach.. Lets be fair although the Hack is great for the lower end The pro's will still be using the Canon C500 and not the 5D. But the lower end is certainly looking healthy now.
  8. Oscar your analogy doesn't work. That RAW live view massive image is now written onto newly developed cards So for that much information to get written onto the card it must create heat. Maybe not as much as line skipping binning or whatever the 5D does But maybe more.  But so far so good.
  9. Okay so the hack means you can now record RAW on a DSLR You can also do this on a BMC The difference is the 5D RAW looks beautiful and to my eyes the BMC looks more drab. However neither camera is better than say an Alexa.   Basicly you have two different emulsions as Shane Hurlbut might put it. The BMC does also somehow look fuller and not as sharpened. For me the 5D image looks filmic and beautiful out of the box I haven't had any decent RAW BMC footage to play around with in colour correction but I wonder if the BMC image can be colour corrected to be similar to the 5D   The magic lantern hack is competition for BMC that was the first to do RAW at a realistic price.   As far as I can see this new option is giving us more choice if we want to work exclusively in RAW   Now there is zero reason WHY a proper RAW video camera should not be forthcoming from all manufacturers. BMC had a years lead but couldn't deliver and have allowed others to steal what should have been theirs for the taking.
  10. Time travel in my opinion fits well in the star trek world after all they warp space with their warp drive which was the reason for the wormhole in the 1978 film Some GREAT episodes where Kirk rescues Joan Collins. Also the one where Kirk took onboard a 60's pilot Loved those episodes.   The voyage home although not my cup of tea was loved by many when they came back to save the whales. I also liked first contact and the borg   Abrams claimed he offered Kirk a part in the new movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzOs4WEutQ8   What Abrams did with the new star trek film was by going back in time he changed the entire trek history so the whole thing can start again with his rebooted version. Basicly saying that the old trek no longer exists no longer relevent.   Bill Shatner is haunting him like the ghost from xmas past even with the new Star wars. Kind of funny but maybe there is a point there and that is Star trek had a history and dedicated fans and that should have been repected.
  11. Well the first star trek film storyline was crap (In my opinion) I'm curious what does a modern day director on a blockbuster movie actually do? The scriptwriters write the story. I doubt JJ does the storyboards The cinematographer shoots the film If the directors job is to direct the actors then I'm sorry but the cast of the first star trek film dont have the same charisma or appeal the first generation had and by trying to replace the first generation with clones that are by design bratish impetuous and downright silly is the only job of a director then I think that it didn't work that well I also think the Trek universe as depicted by Rodenberry was succesful because of its tennants and principles. So the only succesful thing I can see is the use of anamorphic lenses torches and lights to create a futuristic prettyness. I remember the rainbow colours from the 1978 movie on the ships nacelles and engines as perhaps being a starting point for this idea. The problem was it is is a distraction and maybe a welcome distraction from the rest of the film. I think the best part about Abrams first star trek film were the trailers. Now they were impressive. I also liked spocks look almost like a palitoy doll.   What do you think modern directors do and are they neccessary or can they be detrimental. In the case of star wars I think most people agree the first three made were the best and for my money that was down to a very well assembled cast including the droids whose acting was fantastic and copying Stanley Kubricks artistic vision of 2001 for space and making it a family adventure film with a wonderful score.   CGI is a great new tool but a film is always a sum of its many parts.Star Wars once made magic. It would be nice to have that magic again. Is Abrams the right man for the job It is a huge responsibility. Even Lucas wasn't right for the last three films. I say give it to Spielberg. The force is with him.
  12. You may not agree with Phil Bloom but I think it's unfair to make slurs. I'm sure a while back he used magic lantern and fried his camera and is the reason he may view the hacks with caution or keep away altogether.. For some a camera like the C300 is a perfect tool. Here we are in the UK with national broadcasts for the vast majority of broadcasts not HD let alone 4k Many HIGH end productions are not using RAW and yet here we are as consumers wanting to use workflows that would normally be used to shoot feature films and for most unneccesary. A camera like a C300 is like a nice family luxury car. An Alexa a formula one car and a hacked 5D is UNNECCESARY for the vast majority and to shoot properly will need a crew My argument has always been why couldn't we have a camera with a RAW workflow at consumer pricing. Yes they have held back on technology and they have sliced and diced the market for profit and now that is revealed for what it is. Black Magic gave us the answer It seems plain wrong to be putting money in Canons coffers as sales of the 5D rocket and then say Manufacturers have betrayed us and been greedy as some turn their backs on Black Magic and Canon clean up. If BM were to stop making cameras then canon would return us back to their good old days. It's in our interest to support those helping us. I agree that you should use the best camera possible but I disagree the hacked 5d offers improvements over the BMC especially the BM 4K camera. The pocket camera is amazing for the price and the 2.5k is groundbreaking. I will say the 5D hack looks really nice so far. But lets get some persepective here. Things could go pear shaped very quickly if peoples cameras get fried and lets also realise tools are tools and back those who back us.
  13. I said earlier the image was soft. My stupid mistake I didn't have HD on. The picture in the above video is very very nice.
  14. So far how I see this is the canon is soft even in raw The canon has no pro res and working with raw on small cards with enormous amounts of data seems impractical It's bad enough having it all on one big hard drive but on cards like this. I'm worried about reliability with the camera and the cards. I think it will take someone brave to make a feature film with this camera Maybe a music video with a backup camera. Really though is it worth it for a pop video. At this moment This is a long way to being a better choice than a BMC. If you want a full size frame and love bokeh the canon looks to be promising. Funny how this has come at a moment in time when the BMC is nearly out and should steal a lot of annoyed BMC waiters who haven't really thought it through.
  15. The problem is everyone wants to put their mark on things. To improve on the original trilogy and to forever be credited with genius. No one wants to take the original trilogy and give you more of the same but different.   Abrams has put his mark on Star trek. A very big mark and will want to do so on Star wars. If the cast are also going to have a say as well then this will be even worse. All they need to do is go back to the original and remake it exactly except different. Use 35mm film and real models with painted backdrops and then use computer generated effects when it really matters and sparingly. Keep the muppets out make the story king. Build a full size millenium falcon X wings and real storm troopers (There are plenty of fans who love to dress up) Not some weta generated long overhead shot of plastic men fighting robots but REAL stuff and sets with SFX and artist painting backdrops.   Just please you will have to tone Abrams right out of the frame or genuinley convince him of the value of recreating the success of the first two films.
  16. I said maybe 5 years Could be less. Why do you think its conspiracy theory? Am I making it up that the cameras have this technology locked away IE Crippled.
  17. A good business strategy would be to develop high end technology Cripple it for the high end then cripple it even more and sell to the low end. When the high end are finished buying decripple the lower end so it sells by the bucket load then come out with a new range for the higher end that is even better and cripple it for the low end. When your technology runs out of steam You keep your pro and consumer market ticking over with incremental improvements. Maybe five years ago they could make a £500 camera that could shoot raw on cards they could already build but crippled them. Maybe the camera market has maximised profit and we have been led like sheep. Maybe Magic Lantern and Vitaliy are proving this with their work.
  18. This could be a good marketing strategy for canon who now have an excuse to get out of there overpriced lineup and upsetting those invested and sell a lot of 5D's to compensate before bringing out new models that compete with the BMC and make their present lineup redundant. The BMC is the better choice with its form factor reliabilty and effectiveness As for the 5D it will need a lot of work keeping that large sensor focused and bokeh is way way over rated..
  19. Does the G6 have a crop mode and if so what is it.   Does the G6 have clean hdmi out and is it 10 or 8 bit 4.2.2?
  20. Have to disagree with the OT. Escapism is not an option if your into Star Trek and soon Star wars as what you want to escape into is redifined into something to horrible to contemplate. Escapism must come with good story and solid believable characters and in the case of fans who keep these franchises alive a little respect please and not a big grin while telling fans how much they love and admire them while destroying everything they fought over.   In the past the UK could lay claim to the idea we had the skills that created Star wars and Indiana Jones universe. My fear is that could now be lost. I think George osborne has already set the flaky fakery ball rolling by taking credit for Star wars landing here. Really Who cares?    If it is disrespectful and purely designed to make money by delivering great trailers as a hook to a reality far far away from what we want to see and why should Star wars get a tax break? I don't mind seeing tax breaks for poor indie film makers who get no help because they need lawyers to work it all out and don't have a big enough budget for it to be meaningful anyway.   I wonder if some of the blockbuster films really need a director at all. Why not hire someone  really young or an 18 year old son or daughter of a top film exec who could get high and have a few vague ideas translated by the best artists. I bet you could hire a ten year old with crayons  who could come up with a reboot of starwars and have it translated by pro's into realistic eye candy. I would love to see some of these high end directors could direct a low budget inde film as an unknown.   If JJ is to be star wars director then make the film in America please. Maybe disneyland.
  21. I don't agree Star wars still has lots of potential with the right stories and director.   Abrams ruined star trek. He should have done what the next generation did and not try to copy Kirk and the first lot so his new approach could be tested. But they screwed up the trek universe with this.     They could have bought the real Kirk back and given him a better ending. There was so much story they lost by not utilising some of the original crew. It may even have worked better if Kirk and the crew had been made younger versions by some omnipotent being. Anyway the reboot thing was a bad idea added with a bad interpretation. While I agree the reboot has made blockbuster money I think that ultimately history will look back at it as a failure.
  22. Indiana Jones is one of my favourite series of films. I was really happy Ford agreed to do another. Just wish they had made a better film. Maybe the next one will be more in keeping with the original series and I hope there is a next one. Even the last one was better than nothing.
  23. I guess in the japanese camera world Canon must be eating humble pie for allowing the large frame sensor loose as HD video.  Canon are responsible for inadvertantly allowing film making to be available to all Meaning a breakup of crippled cameras and yearly incrementaly improved models.   Maybe this superior high end attitude is some face saving as obviously canons market strategy has been plain stupid.
