Big gap in score... Both gold medals. Identical score... Canon gets gold, and the clearly superior camera gets silver. How can anybody say the EOS M6 is more recommendable than the X-Pro3? Or that an M100 deserves a gold? Just Bizarre. -

DPReview used to be a great British camera info site. Really was great before the move to the US and Amazon. It started going downhill when they started to pad out the front page news feed with clickbait and sponsored content. And imagine how much better it would be with real photographers (as opposed to hipsters) as reviewers. I have never looked at one of Barney Britton's photos and felt anything. -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
The wide-angle selfie 30p IBIS autofocus shot is the new "video". I'd like to get back to cinema. So today I decided to do an experiment. Found a cheap Nikon D850 for 1500 euros. No IBIS. No AF. Going to use a tripod. Shocking!! Every time I have AF and IBIS I'm tempted to use it, and it really is inferior to a tripod and manual focus in terms of "cinematic". So much unmotivated camera movement out there and robotic focus. Nothing against it as a shot-getter, or for convenience sake but I am tiring of watching it. Floaty, artificial and "YouTubey". -

Surprisingly it is! If they keep this up I'll unban DPR links here. It's a bit like a country's border - if they open it to mine, I'll let theirs in. -
Canon EOS R5 overheating vs Panasonic S1H and Sigma Fp designs
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
I completely agree. Canon thought the 8K and specs would outweigh the drawbacks of overheating problems. We'll see however if this harms the Canon brand image for reliability, and how many of the target pro customers (EOS R5 in particular) return the camera within a month because they can't get through shoots. It might end up being a non-issue, or it might end up hurting sales. By the sounds of McKinnon though he is having a lot of problems. We'll see. And yes at least they were transparent about it and made the recording time figures available. -

I could buy one its own plane ticket to the UK, have it accompanied by a minder in seat next to it, buy a fire extinguisher just to be safe and still save £500 on the shop retail price 🙂 -
Disappointed in the Canon R6 - Coming From A Canon User

It's not even a campaign Simply about reporting the facts None of the major coverage initially mentioned any overheating issues. People were pre-ordering the camera under a false pretence. So I had to put the facts on the blog rather than have that info stay hidden in the CVP video. You seem to be suggesting that I should shut up? It's $3900 + tax. I expect it to do what a $3900 Panasonic S1H does - active cooling, 4K 10bit 422 unlimited record times. 6K or 8K is just a bonus. The RAW file sizes are unmanageable for longer record times so the overheating in that mode is only the secondary problem! Of course, you can produce lovely work with the EOS R5. It's will just be a shame about the moment on that shoot where great stuff is being captured up to the point where NOTHING is being captured because the camera got too warm. -

Calm down gt3rs please. The forum has just about become tranquil again after I removed the troublemakers. Don't become the next. Nice perspective. Yes there are two sides to the coin On the one hand Canon pushed the envelope and finally gave us the specs we wanted. On the other hand I wanted a reliable camera too, and there's no excuse for not putting a proper heat sink in there - it is a bit like Intel shipping their most powerful flagship CPU without one. https://www.eoshd.com/news/heat-management-what-canon-can-learn-from-the-panasonic-s1h-and-sigma-fp/ The Sigma Fp and Panasonic S1H lead the way in that and show what's possible. So a major oversight from Canon there. I think there will be a fair bit of denial until the camera actually gives up during a shoot, then people will reconsider how practical it is to use. We have to test it for ourselves at the end of the day. If I can shoot a bunch of takes in the highest quality 4K modes no longer than 5 minutes each and keep going one after the other without heat build-up, I may like the camera more than I do at the moment! I think it's worth waiting to see what the Sony A7S III is going to be like as well. So I may not jump on a pre-order with the EOS R5. Besides as @BTM_Pix pointed out the other day, it is about £1000 cheaper in Japan so may as well go there on holiday for one than pre-order in the UK. -

Smartphone can process the same amount of pixels (8K) and encode to same codec for $700 Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro -
The last one where we had to find the best camera under $200 was a hoot Best technical image was the 4K GX85 but the videos also had various levels of ingenuity and creativity. I am open for ideas for that the next challenge could be 🙂 Best low light camera for under $500? Most cinematic look for $300? (Regardless of resolution) Music video shot with one prime challenge? Let's settle on a theme and see if we can get the next one going.

Canon want you to buy the EOS R5 for that Canon want you to buy the C200 for that Canon want you to buy the C500 II for that and all the rest, really is the last step up, promise. Have you considered the 1D X Mark III? -

Client doesn't care if you miss an entire shot because the camera has steam coming out the card door? -
Yes I probably will enjoy it for that but I have to think not just about myself when I write advice and commentary in blog posts - there are a lot of people who need the longer recording times and predictable reliability, like I described for the shooting situations in the recent post. As for ergonomics I don't feel particularly inspired by the EOS R5 looking at the design, finish or materials, but it does seem to have a decent control layout. Sony are not too bad now though - the A7R IV was a good step in the right direction and they just need to sort the menus out now.

Suuuure. Canon 1D X II has 4K60. Doesn't overheat.
-
Shall we make a list? S1H GH5S GH5 GH4R X-T4 1D X Mark III / II 1D C And so on
-
4K 120fps full pixel readout? Yes please. Sounds like a much better option than EOS R5.
-
The Sigma Fp records internal RAW and is the size of 2 decks of cards!
-
Same overheating and rolling shutter problems to the 4 years old $1200 Sony A6300.

The Canon EOS R5 works in mysterious ways. Canon chose to implement 8K and 4K/120p on this camera knowing that heat build-up will make for some short recording times. This was a risk, because the perceived hit to reliability can generate a lot of bad publicity. What was Canon thinking and what else does the camera offer for when more reliable recording is needed?
