  1. This has tripped me up MANY times - make sure that all the audio tracks in premiere are "on" (you have 3 active channels - A1-A3. Click so all are blue, then drag them over and see).

All focal reducers are doing is changing the lenses so I would go native IF the same focal length and aperture was available or if price made a difference (and you are only using one system).

If the speedboosted lens is faster than native or the focal length/speed you want is not available or you use multiple systems, then focal reducers make a lot of sense.      Of course another advantage of using adapted EF lenses is you can ALSO use non focal reducer smart adapters and get double duty from the same lens.

Your 18-35 is good enough to go with a focal reducer for a start (you can always add native too and can find bargains for M43 if you are patient).

Thanks!! Thats what I've done - I swapped the .64 for the .71 because I did pay enough attention when ordering, but also went ahead and ordered a dumb adapter to see what I think of that instead. I know I'll get less light, but will I lose quality by only getting part of what the lens is seeing?

Yes I have an 82mm SLR Magic that I've used for years. I've never noticed softening or X patterns. There's a slight blue cast that increases as you darken, but it's not objectionable and easy to correct.

Thats funny, the reviews I read said the same, but a slight warm cast (on the MkII 77mm)

The R5 was primed to be near perfect - on paper it had everything people wanted for a reasonable price and then Canon went and throttled it.

So instead they offer this, “a proper video camera” with essentially the same form factor but smaller sensor, no ibis, no viewfinder, and looks like no flip screen?

So you’re paying $2,000 more for what? Built in NDs and the permission to use the camera without it locking down due to “overheating”?

I’m curious what about this C70 is better than what the R5 should have been?

Thats basically why I decided not to wait for it or get an R5. Either they (Canon) have incompetence happening at a major level, or they're being shady at a major level. For half the price, I was able to put together a heck of a 4k BMPCC rig and shoot RAW, and its been out long enough to have great 3rd party/user base support. If I find the BM lacking or annoying, I'll sell it and pick up a used C70 or whatever in a few years (assuming its not pointlessly crippled or has some other glaring flaw that gets found in a few months)

  5. Yall. Chill out. Its just a dude looking for something multipurpose, not professional critical listening. I'm reasonably sure he's not on set as a main audio guy, just needs decent headphones he can hear basic levels/quality with and still game with too.

zerocool - you'll be fine for general use, but I am quite certain those headphones will not be at the same quality as the Sony if that's of any concern.  I also use the same model Sony as my main headphones, But the $30 Bluetooth model I showed you still works great for me in a pinch, even though I know the sound is not as accurate as my sonys.

  6. I was looking at some power options for a BMP4k and Shinobi monitor, and like the idea of powering both from one system, but noticed in the demo video the guy said his HDMI port went out. In the comments, someone mentioned that it a bad idea to power both from the same power source if you are connecting the two via another cable (HDMI/SDI) as you could have some sort of unintended voltage/ground issue that can fry the video port. I can see that as being completely possible, but wanted to know if you guys had any thoughts/experience? Not something I'm really willing to just go out and test!

My initial thought is maybe it has to do with trying to draw different voltages at the same time - ~7.4 for the monitor, and ~12 for the camera (if using the side port vs the battery port).

Thanks any recommendations with a mic, which can come in handy for gaming? Or are there no mini jack headsets with a mic as well(usb maybe) so it has a usb and mini jacl line?

I don't really do any headset gaming (just use the headphones so I don't bother others), but this headset does have a built in mic. I haven't really tested it, but have taken phone calls on it/used siri without issues.

  8. These are my favorite budget headphones. They're bluebooth and also have a 1/8" jack if you lose power or want/need to be wired. They a little bass heavy and not amazing in accuracy, but great for reference. They're closed back, and have surprisingly decent sound isolation for the cost. They aren't silent, but there's a considerable dB drop. Get a long (6-10') 1/8" stereo cable with them so you have room to move around.

     I use them for:

    • Music/Computer
    • Filming/Broadcast
    • Mowing/Weedeating (blocks out external noise well enough for me to comfortably listen to music/podcasts, but can still hear outside in case someone's yelling for me or there's a problem with mower. Lol)

I'd go for the P4K (the benefits of 6K vs 4K are far outweighed by how much it would have to suck to use EF instead of MFT).

    P4K vs C100 means:
    Timecode.
    Easier gimbal usage.
    10bit.
    4K.
    Mirrorless mount.
    Slow motion.

The ergonomic downsides won't be a deal breaker because you're either doing sit down interviews (which are controlled settings, the P4K is perfectly great for this) or B Roll (thus if you miss a moment that won't be a deal breaker in the edit, or you could often re-do it).

Would be different if you said you're a sports shooter, or reality tv cameraman, or war corespondent, etc... then I'd be giving serious pause to consider instead the merits to staying with the C100.

Thats my line of thinking also?

Why are you saying it would suck to use EF vs MFT? I just bought my sigma 18-35, lol (along with my other canon lenses). If I went 4k, I'd probably get the speedboster with EF mount anyways. I don't have any MFT lenses, and don't want to get crazy with a wide assortment of diff mounts

I've been wrestling with the idea of selling my C100ii since I've loaded up on too many cameras. I also have a GH5, G9, BMPCC4K, and just bought a BMPCC6K. The issue is that while there is a fair bit of overlap in many of these cameras, none of them have the total package of the C100ii—the ND's, Dual Pixel AF, built-in dual XLR, EVF and flip screen, fantastic low light, incredibly light but still quality codec, dual card slots, battery life for hours, etc. etc. etc.

At the end of the day if you can afford to keep the C100 and still get the BMPCC4K, I think you'll find value in having both. It's still a fantastic camera that especially now has a second wave of prime usage in livestreaming.

Yeah, I've been having that same thought. Had a big project some through, so def don't HAVE to get rid of it, more was thinking I don't want to keep it and not use it while its value drops.

I do run and gun docs in difficult situations and I love my C100Mk2. The camera helps me get the shots I need... and that is worth more to me that a frankenrig with extra resolution.

    I would look at the C200/ C300MkII.

The thing to keep in mind is my run and gun is silent B-roll - I'm not shooting docs. 90% of the time, I'm either locked down shooting interviews with a full rig, or need my minimal rig to shoot run and gun silent B-roll on a gimbal. C100 is already too big to get full articulation on my Ronin S, even after removing the EVF, so 200/300 are no go.

I'm very interested in the hopefully/maybe soon to be announced RF cinema line, but I'm sure to get the features I'm looking for, I'd be looking at the $6k+ model. BMPCC is $2k.

It's a balance of quality, value, adaptability. I also don't do this work full time, its my side hustle, so I use bigger projects to fund new gear, but can't eat all the profits, right? 🙂

Isn't there a trick you can do in Davinci Resolve where you bring in a screenshot of an image you like and there's a technique that lets you nearly exactly match the source picture. I would think though to pull an image in that many different directions you would probably need to shoot in raw and of course as you mentioned, lighting, gamma curve, camera, etc. had a lot to do with it as well. I've seen some other videos where after you use the shot match feature they go in and start using selective color and wave forms to more exactly match the source image.

Premiere also has a color match clip option, but of course it all depends on the source footage you're working with (how far you can manipulate it).

PS - The Chosen has been pretty solid compared to your general Christian Film industry. Interested to see how the new season turns out.

  13. Thanks!! I didn't clarify, a lot of my run and gun is no audio, just throw the cam on the ronin S and get B-roll, so not too worried there. Definitely not doing any documentary type work. Its interviews with wireless lavs, and b-roll overtop VO's almost exclusively.

I also already have a shinobo external monitor w/hood, so not worried there either :).

image quality and better futureproofing is my biggest reason to switch.

  14. Hi all,

Thinking of selling my c100 and moving to the BM 4k or 6k. I don't especially dislike anything about the C100 other than limitations in bitrate, framerate and resolution. As much as anything else, its a desire to more to something a little smaller/more flexible for different types of shoots, as well as getting something a little more future proof and selling the c100 before its value drops too far.

I mostly do corporate/industry shoots - lots of sitdown interviews (indoor & outdoor) and lots of out in the field run and gun B-roll. Before the C100, I was using a 7d and then 5 mkii, so I'm reasonably used to the DSLR workflow. I also found myself rarely using autofocus as there's too many times I found the C100 focusing on the wrong item (usually because its something small moving in the wind, or its not something I had centered in the frame, etc).

I'm weighing my loss of easy XLR and ND's, and longer battery/media longevity in the C100 against RAW recording, higher resolutions, and better overall image quality in the BMPCC's.

Overall, what do yall think? And if you do prefer BMPCC, thoughts on 4k vs 6k? I'd be downsampling for sure, but I've seen comparisons and jut thought the 6k was much sharper (and better colors).

  15. I'm contemplating getting a 4k or 6k (still weighing pros and cons), but one thing I'm trying to sort out is audio.

I mostly do corporate shoots where I Lav someone up, when its a single mic, no problem (Sennheiser avx-mke2). However, its not uncommon that I'll have 2 people mic'd on screen for a tandem presentation, and its often out in the field and I'm running solo, so I lav mic em both vs trying to run a shotgun.

It looks like I could run one of the Mics into the mini XLR (XLR -> Mini XLR adapter) and the other into the 1/8" mic in (XLR -> 1/8" adapter) and select separate recording channels for each in the camera. Is that the case? Any major issues I'd be running into (other than where to put the things?). I'd rather do this than add another piece of battery powered hardware to the rig, but I'm open to options.

    Thanks all!

  16. I've ordered the Sigma 18-35 F/1.8 to start off, I've just read so many good things and have had it recommended more than the Canon 17-55. I'm still keeping my eye open for the right zoom/telephoto for my longer shoot, but will keep with the 28-135 for the time being. There's been plenty of times I've needed all 135mm because I couldn't get physically closer, so I'm wary of anything too much shorter than that.

I was watching Planet Earth II, and saw them with the 30-300 Cine. Now THERE'S my ideal lens! Lol. Just $45k, no biggie.

Funnily enough am thinking of selling C100 and if I do will also sell the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 and 18-135mm STM lenses if you're in the UK and interested. (Also have 35mm 2.8 I.S. with macro and Sigma 105mm 2.8 IS macro)

I'm actually in the US, but appreciate the offer!

The image quality is lacking by modern standards, and it lacks the biggest feature in Canon's favor: DPAF.

And the likes of an M50 is dirt cheap, and would completely your C100 well in a seamless manner.

Well, I suggested the Canon CN-E 18-80mm T4.4 first of all!

The 18-135mm was just a secondary thought, as a dirt cheap option to consider if the Cine Zoom was too expensive. And yes, I noted already that you've got a 28-135, but in my opinion 28mm wide end on S35 is too restrictive for a general purpose run & gun lens. There is a massive massive difference between 18mm and 28mm

    Thanks for the insight!

Would recommend you ditch the 5Dmk2 as soon as you can, and upgrade to a better B Cam. Especially for interviews/promos it can be handy to have a second bonus angle. You can could for instance consider getting a Canon EOS M50 for cheap, which would be a nice match for your C100

Out of curiosity, what do you not like about the 5dii? I know its old, but I rarely use it - I still do some photography with it, which I like, and its nice if the C100 is locked down for an interview and I want to go grab some B-roll.

I saw you mentioned the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens - I happen to have the 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS already. Its ok, not amazing. Any thoughts on how the two compare?
