Nice to hear MLV App reads the white balance properly for you. Did you change any settings in the program? On the PC version it always defaults to 6000k.

You are right. MLV App reads the files with AWB as 6000k always. It is strange that it can read manual white balance properly. Do you know any app that can convert eos m files and read AWB properly? Also: the MLV app cannot convert to cinema dng in my mac (high sierra), only ProRes 4444. Do you know anything about this bug?

3x + the 1.6x crop of the sensor. If you want s16 and RAW, just get the Blackmagic Pocket or Micro. It reliably shoots Full HD in RAW as well as ProRes, with a s16 sensor.

I agree, if you are looking at S16, it is better to go with a BMPCC. You probably can get a used one for just a bit more than an eventually new eos-m speed booster.

That's weird, it seems to work for me. Even when the magic lantern overlay is on liveview, I just press the Q Set physical button and from there I tap on the screen to choose different colour balance presets, which include AWB. I always leave my camera on AWB since it works very well.

I got it to work and now I have the AWB working in camera and the Mac's MLV App reads it properly. How do you deal with exposure, any tips? Especially, how do you set zebras, 90%, 80%, etc..

  4. Great video, @Alpicat. Thanks! However, I am not sure if I explained myself clearly. I want to be able to get the auto white balance on camera to work. I cannot set my eos m to AWB with magic lantern. With magic lantern installed, I have to choose the white balance manually putting the value in kelvins. Is there a way to get the AWB with magic lantern to work in camera?

  5. Hello, folks. Is it possible to have the auto white balance working with ML RAW? I am using the MLV App (mac) to convert the files to ProRes 444 and I see it can read the white balance information from the raw files. It would be great to be able to use the canon good auto white balance as a base for grading, etc. For now, I am just using it as super 8 film. 3200k internal, 5500k external.

  6. I just got a Fotodiox adapter. Much better. I still think the the lens screw a little bit too much, but you get a good parfocal performance with the 6-66mm, not perfect though. But the lens stays upside-down! Also, the fotodiox does not work with my Schneider CCTV 12.5-75mm. Thus, I have to keep the older adapter for that lens. It is crazy how those c mount adapters are all over the place! I am glad humanity invented the bayonet mount!

  7. Thank you very much, folks! Probably the M mount version of the Schneider is more precise too but those leicinas sell for a great prize. It is great to hear that the Angenieux has a good cover though. I will try to get one soon.

I will try to get a new adapter as well. I am also thinking about trying some brushes between the lens and the adapter to see if I get the lens to screw less.

  8. Hi folks... which adapter are you using for the Super 8 lens? I noticed that the Schneider 6-66mm in the fotasy adapter screws too much, passing the optimal point. I cannot get constant focus through the zoom range, specially towards the wide end with a 1.8 aperture. Did you notice this problem with your adapters or did you find a solution? I had read the the schneider-beaulieu lens did not have exactly the standard c-mount flange distance, because of the internal filter of the super 8 lens: it seems to be true.

I don't even know how to activate 1408x1030 in ML on the EOS-M. Do you need the experimental build with 10bit/12bit and mlv_lite for that? (I've skipped this so far because the module doesn't record sound.)

Thanks. so, are you using the standard ML build with 14 bit raw. What is the maximum resolution you get in crop mode for Super 8 lens?

  10. I can confirm that the "Beaulieu Optivaron 6-66mm f1.8" vignettes as @Alpicat showed. Does anyone have a Angenieux   8-64mm 1.9 to test in crop mode to see if it also vignettes at 4:3 (1408x1030)? I would like to buy one, but before that it would be good to know if it would cover this resolution. Perhaps @cantsin or someone else?

According to Pro 8mm the 6-66mm will vignette with a Super 8 camera with the Max 8 modification (which is basically an enlarged gate). However, they say the Angenieux 8-64mm will not vignette on this Max 8 mod. Then, it seems the Angenieux should have a larger image circle.

I can confirm that Schneider CCTV 12.5-75mm 1.8 covers the crop mode fine. It is a relatively small light for a zoom, but of course the fun is in having a real Super 8 covering as much the sensor as possible.

I know the Rolling shutter is better, but what is interesting is Philip  Bloom put a Speedbootster on the A7r mk II in the s35 crop mode, and that pushed it back up to FF, and the Rolling shutter was almost gone.

What is the influence of the speedbooster on the rolling shutter in S35? I don't see how it can alter the rolling shutter as the rolling shutter is linked to the reading out speed of the sensor... right or am I missing something?

I just started using the crop rec 4k experimental build on the EOS-M, and when shooting in movie crop mode it goes up to 1800x1024 resolution (max resolution available for 1:1 crop mode) at 23.976 fps, shooting continuously in 10-bit lossless raw, or approx a minute or so in 12-bit lossless. That's close to full HD, which is incredible for this camera. To me it looks great, and also the focus pixels seem to have gone. What's nice about movie crop mode is that it displays the image at the normal framerate in colour with the correct framing, no choppy b&w preview.

I'm using this programme to convert files to DNGs directly from the SD card into the harddrive: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=10526.100   (latest version of the program is in page 5)

How do you get "the normal framerate in colour with the correct framing, no choppy b&w preview" with the "crop rec 4k experimental build"? I assume you are not using the Magic Lantern Preview but the canon stock preview mode? If so, the framing is always 16:9. When I use the Magic Lantern Preview mode instead of the canon one, the image is very choppy, almost unusable, but you can get other framings like 4:3.

I bought a Schneider 6-66mm for my EOS M, but it vignettes too much in the 3x movie crop mode, and I have no desire to shoot in raw, so if anyone here wants the lens, pm me.

Is the crop 3x the same as 1:1 Raw?

I got a Schneider 12.5-75mm CCTV lens for basically nothing. It seems the same lens made for several brands: Toya, Canon, etc. It is very light and compact. Anyone has some experience with this one? I am still waiting my EOS M to arrive from Japan. This guy seems to like the lens:

@byuri734 NX500 is a lot better than the a6000 both in specs, and real life use, it's not even close. It doesn't have EVF, I haven't used an EVF since forever (and NX1's is amazing), and the Super AMOLED screen never dims, in no circumstances whatsoever. If your shooting style commands a camera stuck to your eye, and your nose is a few millimeters long, then I am sure you do enjoy the a6000's EVF.

I never said that a6000 was better than NX500: I was discussing why Sony "screwed up" with the a6000 line, great potential that was lost in my option. NX line was great? Sure, and it got extinct while the a6000 is still a great seller today. I am saying why a6000 sold well: cheap, EVF, aps sensor, very small, good 1080p, 24mp, good autofocus. Which camera did that in 2014? NX500 didn't even exist.

@byuri734 That camera exists and it is called NX500. Records continuous video for 78 minutes. No overheating, 4K(crop similar to Nikon D500). 28mgpxls BSI sensor. With a vastly superior kit power zoom lens than Sony's and one of the best SOLED touch screen implementations ever (still best menu system in the industry), and amazing ergonomics (for such a small camera, do not put any speed boosted 70-200 on it!) 2 wheels - on thumb and index - for basic operations (Sony hasn't figure this out on their newer APS-C cameras yet).  Bonus: best connectivity features back in 2015, now others catching up (and exceed), but still relevant (Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC etc). Only thing that lacks, a mic in!

NX500 has no EVF. It is a great camera though, but not in the same segment of a6000, more like in the segment of the a5100.

  16. a6000 was a camera ahead of its time: very cheap, extremely compact for an aps-c camera with a viewfinder, 24mp, great autofocus, very good 1080p, unusual (for Sony) updated video codec in their mid-life.

I think Sony screwed up with their development in their aps-c line with 4k and IS through the a6300 and 6500. The cameras got bigger, more expensive and with more bugs/bad publicity (overheating, ridiculous rolling shutter, etc.). They should have left IS and 4k for the A7 line: A7rII and specially A7rIII proved the perfect platform for them. The sucessor of a6000 should have focused on having 28mp (like the NX1), better autofocus and even better 1080p, a flip screen, and more (compact) lens options.

The two best S8 lenses ever built are the Schneider Optivaron 6-66mm/f1.8 and the Schneider Macro-Cinegon 10mm/f1.8, both with Leica M mount for the Leicina Special camera. Their optical and mechanical quality is much better than the CCTV c-mount lenses one would normally use.

Do you have any experience with the Pentax 8-48mm?

Can one record 4:3 in "movie crop mode", something like 1370x1024... this would create a 4:3 image (like Super 8) and would help reduce file sizes and give you more time of 12-bit lossless? When you say recording time is drastically reduced with a "brightly lit scene," how many seconds you are taking about. Is it around 15 seconds at least? It could be interesting if so. Super 8 has a cartridge of around 3 minutes, I would rarely record more than 15 seconds per take, it was like shooting and editing at the same time, and that was really, really fun and of course less stressing than digital when doing the final editing, having to deal with hours and hours of long takes in post now!
