    Stunning piece from Keith Hammond:

Wow! Nice...this is the reason why this lut excels...we can make our gh5 practically indistinguishable from other quality tvcs out there

I have 4 commercials lined up and am using this ghalex lut on all 4

I'm looking at those shots on a crappy old laptop, so take this with a grain of salt - but while the GH5 with filters shot looks great in terms of fall-off, it also looks quite soft. Won't all this manipulation make the image too soft (LC, DD1, digital olpf, 1080 upscale)?

I like a detailed, organic filmic image. Not the overly sharp digital look. But I don't want to go too far in the other direction and make it look like it was shot on Betamax with a 35mm adapter :)

Even with "organic filmic image" productions use a stack of filters as well

The walkthrough is detailed in the last step for the NLEs in the Pdf. It essentially spreads every point of light out, lowering micro-contrast, like an 'inverse-sharpening', by using a blur layer paired with opacity

    wow. thanks. U rock!!

Maybe in the future when u get a chance, check out the Schneider radiant soft filter

In my case, I shoot to 2K All-I, and use the digital Olpf settings, to make the resolution organic (and upscale as needed). Paired with the DD1, I find I only need the lighter olpf settings (5.2/20) to counter sharpening, and the DD1 takes over texture from there for a solid match. The full 6/20 is too much with the DD1 (beyond a match)

Man!!!! I learn more and more with each reply. What is the digital olpf setting?

I've been using it for the first time on a shoot recently (first time filming anything since my research splurge in Nov). I definitely always want to use DD1, no matter what. I may experiment with other diffusion in combination, for artistic falloff (though the GH5 will never be an exact match for AA halation). Jan Sandvik, a GHa fan, posted an interesting diffusion example using black tulle in front of the lens, which I thought was quite filmy:

Fantastic! Read about downscaling 4k to 2k as Jan Sandvik posted. great technique, and upscaling from 2up back to 4 K for that reduced digital edge

About two months ago, I bought a bunch of filters to see if I could match the Olpf optically. I haven't had a chance to do a proper write up, but updated the Pdf - the closest one was Tiffen's Digital Diffusion 1. I had always thought Low Contrast 1/2 would be the match because of Jim Jannard's note about matching the Red to Alexa many years ago, but it wasn't even close (too strong). That said, LC did improve the falloff, to smooth out the stair stepped nature of the GH5's falloff, which was Alexa-like.

The optimal stack I settled on was:

Lens > Firecrest ND (Cancels out inverse sensor reflections) > Tiffen Low Contrast 1/8 > Tiffen Digital Diffusion 1

That said, I use 1/4, which gives a nice distinct diffusion and smooth falloff, but is decidedly stronger than the Alexa (lowering the contrast as well). LC 1/4 + DD1:

This original Gunleik Groven test had also convinced me that Low Con 1/2 would be the ticket:

    And DD1 examples, from Tiffen:

wow! thats some gems in there! Great information. thanks.

So Im assuming you mostly use that combo when shooting the gh5?

Thanks! Alex makes it easy! And his latest tip came from the GH5 Facebook group. Tiffen of course makes a bunch of filters, the pro mist filters probably being their most popular. But they also have a “Digital Diffusion” filter that comes in different densities. It softens fine texture without overly blooming light (halation). Alex suggested trying the Digital Diffusion in the 1 density. It’s subtle, but sort of emulates that olpf look. I’m sure he can explain more, but have a look at this video: https://vimeo.com/162597544/description

Nice! thanks for the suggestion! I just started using schneider's radiant soft and it does wonders...Im going to check out this digital diffusion filter

No olpf blur on these. Just quick color tests to see how much I could save this random GX85 video. On a related note, I've gotten my DD1 filter and will share some GH5 results later, but so far I've noticed a nicer texture, however it adds quite a bit more flaring to the image.

Great work as usual, I love all your ghalex vids.

Was wondering what the DD1 filter is and what it does?

That's definitely the plan; at present, I've had some breakthroughs in figuring out the server code that I needed to tackle, so I'm getting close there. Then I can return to developing the site, and subsequently the cameras. I'm also simultaneously shooting a film, which is consuming all of my free time (for the next month). I used the actual Alexa on some shots, GH5 on the rest. I want to have everything ready by May. That's the goal.

wow. Inter cutting alexa and GH5, thats legendary! Keep up the good work

I think it will probably work. Granted, when it comes to color, its hard to assume (measurement is often a surprise)

Here is a Cine-D to VLog conversion to test it out with: http://emotivecolor.com/hlgtovlog.html?v=1.2

hi Sage, not sure if you answered this but are you planning to release the LUTs tailored to the GH5s and the Pocket 4k? If so, are you close? I understand you are working on a ton of other stuff

  11. 14 hours ago, Kleo said:

Didn't see too many GH5s examples in here. I went back to an old project and used the Cine-D to V-Log pre and then applied the GHa Daylight V3 in DaVinci Resolve. It worked out better than I thought it would. I'll be shooting more V-Log L in the future with this LUT in mind to test it out. Shot in 4K UHD with Contax Zeiss lenses and a Zhongyi Lens Turbo 2.

@RCV It does need to be a neutral WB for the key light. You can get the same monochromatic reduction following the conversion in post by desaturating and then doing a WB shift, or midtone wheel shift. The color conversion underneath will be true to form.

The P4K is still in the distance; if Black Magic would sell one to me, I could get started ? Alas, one day

    Thanks a lot man

  13. Great Product, Sage.

I'm about to to purchase it.

One question, for those of us who like shooting at 4000 K in daylight to get that toned down blue mood, what version of the lut should we apply? or does it have to be shot at daylight temp according to the manual to get the great fleshtones

Also, looking forward to the  P4K version. How far away are you? and are you waiting till they implement BRAW in it to mach on?

    Keep up the great work
