Sometimes I'm tempted to go shoot an entire feature film improvised with only a rough outline, but that is just because I'm lazy and I need to find a script writer to partner with!

It was an on camera mic? (oh wait, maybe maybe there was one lav)

Nearly 10 minutes is quite a long short film to do in only 6hrs, I'd keep it more compact. From my skim over your film I feel it would benefit from snappier cuts?

But then again a couple of weeks ago I shot around 20 pages of script in only a single day ? Shit

One cheap sound guy with the most basic equipment and no experience ?

  3. Normally i script everything, but with this film all the actors improvised....everything.........it was shot in just six hours........The best part is i only told the actor about the beginning.....the last part i surprised him just before we shot it........he was angry jjajjajajajaja

@Charlie @zerocool22 I've struggled to find places that talk about creativity rather than equipment too.

There are a few threads here, but I think the real artistic knowledge is worth money and is held mostly by people too busy making films to hang out online or the people who do hang online are selling that knowledge via online courses.

There is a lot of debate about "should I go to film school" and one of the arguments for and against it is that the best way to learn is to practice and actually make films - the people who say avoid film school say make lots of films instead and the people that say go to film school say that it's good because it forces you to make lots of films (as well as other advantages too of course).

I've found that EOSHD is good for equipment discussions, forums like https://liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php which is about colour grading and post production, and manufacturer specific forums where users of that software/hardware sometimes talk about creativity, but they're often rare.  I like liftgammgain because a lot of what colourists do is artistic judgement so those topics come up quite frequently.

Make films!!!!......you should see my first film....it was utter shit jajjjjaajaaj......check it here, its dogshit hahahahahha

    Thats how you learn

Ah, so they're all doing their own MU.

How do you source your models and chose your locations? (do you come up with the ideas, or is it a collaboration?)

Basically we talk on Facebook, they show me clothes and |I say yes or NO jjajjajaajjajaj

    where are you based?

Do you work with a MUA as well?

Thanks @Charlie it's always interesting to see how other people approach a project!

I also thought your tutorial was good - well paced with the right level of information provided..  I'm definitely interested in more.  I'm especially interested in how you record things when you're out shooting :)

Thanks Kye................I appreciate the kind words!!

    Check this out.....

Well it’s easy for him to say, since he’s shooting with an Alexa and Angenieux lenses, but I’ve just got a crappy old mirrorless. ?

That made me laugh out loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?.............i think people say LOL but im too bloody old!!

My post was not to irritate or piss people off...........

I just get sick of this gear talk..........show your work for Christs sake............then we  can (friendly) help each other

Cameras are to make  things with............................NO????????????

    Great stuff @Charlie!

Just one thing that looked like it might have been out of place - on the shots where she was silhouetted against the sunset the highlights of her dress were iridescent blue.  Was that intentional?  It looked more like the orange/teal grade had gone a little awry?

i THINK LIKE A normal audience member, not a tech film guy.............so I dont give a shit hahhhahahahhaah

I never practice, I practice during projects. So I #@{* up some projects now and then because I am trying out some new things. Sometimes it pans out, mostly it does not. You learn from your mistakes. I don't like filming stuff for practice (as in uninteresting subjects with bad lighting) as it would kill my love for shooting.

Totally agree with this, I hate shooting stuff without an actual end goal i.e a short film, music video, whatever.

I do a fair few modelling videos which is great fun for soooo many reasons. You can get models to shoot on various Facebook groups, TFCD, TFP or whatever who will work with you for free in exchange for some edited video or photos for their portfolio.

Am shooting one tomorrow in fact....

You got to love it.  The modern world.  You can you get it right IRL, but get chastised for failure by random internet strangers.

Indeed...but I always take on board (constructive) criticism and appreciate everyone has different tastes. I took a risk on this wedding, which the couple were fully aware of and they are very happy with the result. That is all that matters to me.

This forum is generally better than most in that the vast majority of people here make good points and appear to enjoy helping others.

For those that make childish/insulting comments, it's water off a ducks back to me. It says more about you than me.

learning how to maintain good exposure is a crucial part of the job

    Exactamundo...

Regardless of what people think of my wedding video, the exposure and focus are pretty much on the money.....even though I'm swinging the camera like a lunatic ?...all manual

Being in control of the gear is half the fun.

BTW You do realise that the sensor size has nothing whatsoever to do with exposure, aperture, shutter speed or ISO? So whether it's M43 or FF is irrelevant.

As understand it, and I may be wrong, f4 on m43 is f8 on full frame in terms of light gathering, therefore if you had an m43 and full frame camera, both set to f4 with the same shutter speed, the full frame cam would be brighter, no?

Hallmark cinematographers will get the bulk, but live the dream and do it your way!

I can do the Hallmark style, that's easy - put everything in slow mo, add zhiyun crane, blend with Ed Sheeran, sprinkle in the odd drone shot because hey, it's like totally cool...season with microwave LUT cus...dem colus dough innit...........?

Heard back from the couple today...

    "CHARLIE!!

WOW! We absolutely love the video! THANK YOU SO MUCH! It was so wonderful having you there to capture everything. THANK YOU SO MUCH! It really does capture the happiness of the day and everyone's crazy personalities! WOWOWOW!

Truly can't thank you enough! We'd love to be a reference for you if you need!

    THANK YOU!"
