One thing I forgot to add is FCP X for all its greatness does not have curve for exposure. It only handles shadows, mids and highlights with 3 fixed points (I assume which means linearly). This looks really weird to me and I need to find some plugin because it's not enough. Anyone have any tips?

    Colour Finale

  2. I used Vegas on PC before I moved to Macs 5 years ago. Then used Premiere until FCPX came along. After a while I switch to FCPX. I love the fast editing with the magnetic time line. You can consult the professional SOHO Editors on Vimeo for a better understanding.

I shoot mainly Sony cameras now, however have had Canon – only 1dx for the moment for shooting stills (sport).

    1.     Use different PPs on Sony, depending of the situation.

    2.     Import footage directly into FCPX (Sony’s codecs). No need for extra intermediate steps.

    3.     Use FCPX tagging features to clips if a bigger project to ease finding the footage when editing (not necessary)

    4.     You can create optimized footage in FCPX (ProRes) and all is handled in the background (and proxies as well id you need). I don’t do it much as the computer handles the files without any issues, even with effects on the timeline (iMac 5k). Only use ProRes if the footage comes from ShoGun.

    5.     Adjust the clips if necessary to have a neutral look, either with FCPX color panel, or the very nice Color Finale plugin (which kind of give Resolve editing features directly in FCPX) (of coerce Resolve is more advanced). May use a LUT if its sLog2 or 3.

    6.     Stabilize the footage if needed, either with internal tool in FCPX or the Lock & Load from CoreMelt. With this you can even do tracking directly in FCPX.

    7.     Put a grade layer on top of all footage – to give the final look. Then you only do this once for the sequence and not on each clip. Very handy.

    8.     Alternatively do a roundtrip to Resolve via XML, but it more cumbersome and I mostly can do what I want directly into FCPX.

    9.     Adjust and fix audio, use plugins – for example Waves, Fabfilter, Izotope or Logic plugins, etc. Alternatively do a roundtrip to Logic X via XML for more complicated mixes. I very used to DAWs as I play guitars.

    10.  Render the movie, either via disk or you can go publish directly to Vimeo or YT. Rendering is very fast from FCPX – it beats Premiere ( at leaset the test on YT shows this). I have not seen a big difference making a ProRes and then upload that to Vimeo.

    11.  I use a Raid5 disk and backup that up to the Cloud.

  3. I am concidering getting the FS5. Have the A7s2.

Is there a significant reduction in rolling shutter of the FS5 compare to A7s2 ?

Will it deliver 10bit 4:4:2 over SDI in 4k ? enabling recording with ShoGun.   (Know the Raw output should come later)

How is the autofocus system compared to A7s2 ?

Yes referring to the HDMI output while in 4K mode. Can be recorded to any cheap HD external recorder like a ninja 2 or star.

Didn't give a word about it, so I suspect 5D(s/III) quality. No surprises as they'd have been mentioned.

The 5Ds has a great HD though, not the best, but good. I assume this is no better, at least not too much. 4K is the deal here.

Go to the pinned Native Camera files Thread on this forum. See if there's a 1DC file to download or if no just ask for it, andrew or one of the many 1DC owners will upload you one. Try that in your machine just to know exactly how the files will work if you get a 1DXII.

You'll probably want (not need) to transcode to ProRes for super fluidity and storage reduction. But try it.

MJPEG 500mbps 4:2:2 is not a friendly codec for computers or drives, but it does give a hell of a lot of quality, just like having in-camera ProRes HQ in a DSLR quality wise.

Thanks Ebrahim;  downloaded a 1dc clip to my maxed out iMac. No problems what so ever to edit in FCPX, even with adding plugins like Colour Finale, Lock and Load .

So that will not be a issue.

They arent more expensive today than the SD cards for the BMPCC was when it was new. And they drop every day. So I wouldnt let that be the thing stopping me if I wanted it.

Still on the fence. I moved to Sony for video (have the A7r2 and A7s2). Still have my 1Dx for shooting sports. So if I get this one, it will be as much for stills and possible a sequence or 2 with 4K/60fps. Anybody who has a comment on editing Mepg, do we need to transcode to prores. I am on FCPX.

  6. I more intrested if it make sense to ugrade from A7sii then the old 1Dc discussion.

    Is the picture any better?

Obviously the ND filter is nice, but we lose the IBIS and would get back the micro shake when hand held.

    (before the Raw comes along)

  7. I dont get, why are people so provoked by the iPhone? Boom shoot a nice video with it. Of coure we would use a more high end camra for most work, but given the limitation in lences etc. It actually capture nicer video then Nikon, but not A7r2.

Lets say, you are on a travel and do not have your regular camra, you can use your iPhone and get a ok video.

By the way, I have A7r2 , A7s, 5D3 and 1Dx, Shogun + an iPhone. -  Of coure we see the limitations, but also the joy.

  8. He's saying the Iphone outperforms the D750 for video. Gross misinformation either as an innocent lack of IQ evaluation knowledge or as click-bait.

and btw to posters: recording 4K video from a 6K Full Frame 36mm x 24mm Sensor to a robust codec is a 100x harder than recording 4K from a pin-head sized native 4K sensor. Technology hasn't caught to performing the former yet, bashing Nikon about it is lack of understanding how cameras work.

do you guys really know fstoppers?

They are probably achived more then many of us with respect to photo/video. They have shoot a lot with Nikon so it must be a big suprise that the iPone beat the Nikon. There is another video showing that A7r2 is better. Be glad they did not compare with Canon........

Saying they are idiots seems strange....they have a point

  9. For 4k you only have to use the A7R2 - with a very light prime or e.g. the cine FE 28-135 (200 in S35 mode) for video. Video is excellent, stills are EXELLENT (also with the FE28-135).  With native lenses, better autofocus  (e.g. eye focus tracking) or even with 5D3 (autofocus is way better on A7R2 then A7s).  Only for long takes > 30min in 4k you may need a recorder, also to eliminate the 30 minute limit + possible overheating.

I see myself now selling off many Canon lenses, plan to keep the 1Dx for "extreme" sports with the longer primes (400) and the 70-200, maybe keep the 24-70 as well. for all normal focal length + wide - use the Sony. Have now used the A7R2 for 3-4 weeks I clearly see the the much better sensor (dynamic range and ability to push shadows) then current Canons.

That said, everyone finds what works best for them, different priorities etc.

  10. That's strange. To compare you have to take a 1DC to get 4k. The Fe 28-135 (gives 200 in S35 mode) add the FE 55 1.8 for low light. I have the canon 70-300 and the 1dx, this will be way more. So its wrong. The Fe 35 1.4 is heavy though. Batis 25 would be lighter.

  11. I really prefere the scalbility of Sony, you can go very light without the hassle of an extra EVF to shoot, as you need for Canon and Nikon DSLR. Put a bigger lense fe-28-135 ( get a range from 28 till 200 for video). Go with ShoGun if you stay in one location. Take amazing stills with the A7r2. It all about prefereses, but I am tired of dragging the big Canon + lenses around the world. If your sitting in front of your desk, many camreas looks nice on paper.

  12. have you gotten a7r ii to over heat with the shogun?

Not if you start the recording from ShoGun and the 30 min limit goes away.

correction, no morie on timeline if one pick high quality playback - seem like prores don't need that, which make sense. More processsing needed with the sony codec.

  13. but how does image quality compare between the too with the shogun in 4k and 1080p 60fps and FF and APS-C? Even Andrew said a7r ii has more morie and aliasing. Also does the a7r ii over heat with the shogun. The over heating is a huge deal breaker for me, not the use of an external recorder.

To me the final quality of video look pretty much the same for 4k on SHoGun (a7s) and A7r2 internal.  What I see is morie when editing the 4k A7r2 on the timeline - as soon as you create the final output - it disappears. The ProRes ShoGun does not show any morie on the timeline. And maybe the ProPes is better to garde, but find the Sony codec fine as well (in FCPX). To me the advantage of smaller files is more important.

  14. Uhm, this was shot with a stabilized lens - the 16-35 F/4 IS.  All handheld and purely casual shooting.  IBIS is fine for short lenses, but really useless for 135mm+.  Also you do know there are external EVFs that attach to the HDMI port, right?  Like this one:

IMO it's the best of both worlds - this EVF does way more than the Sony built in EVF; I can remove it when I don't want to use it.  False colors, multiple zoom modes, underexposed/overexposed areas, crop marks, more peaking choices, etc.  Weighs less than a pound and I can pull it off to shoot sports; it attaches to the shoe so no, I don't need to remove it.  I would take exception to your use of the word "extreme" sports.  The A7x can't shoot regular sports without any native long glass or good focusing in low / mixed lighting.  I hate shooting action with an EVF.  But hey, for non-moving objects it's a great camera -  if you don't have a client pissed when it overheats and shuts down.  Nothing is as clumsy as that.  To each his own I guess.

Only false coulur is not available in the Sony EVF.  I used a Zacuto EVF on Canon, but the Sony EVF is better quality. I found shooting our dog is quite a challenge for AFing. In fact with the A7r2 I am able to shoot stills of the dog running around with Canon glass like 24-70 and 70-200 - it will not work good on the A7s. You right, it works even better with native glass. You will not have any video AF with the canon 16-35, in fact you will have the with a A7r2.  If I shoot for a long period >30min - the shoGun is solving any overheat problem and you get a way more powerful monitor solution then the LCD evf on the picture above. Apologies if I became harsh in my reply, like you its just my opinion.

  15. Well gosh thanks a lot.  I thought I would get ridiculed off the boards for shooting family videos with a 1dc.  I'm just trying to get the best footage of my kids while they're young that I can afford.  I shot the 5d3 raw for almost 2 years - I'd have stayed with it but I wanted the ability to crop with 4k plus the 12 FPS for sports.  Plus of course the non-hacked reliability.

I have the 1Dx + 5d3 and did some film with it. Footage is better on 1dc , but I get very good quality with A7r2 as well. And I see you have problem with stable footage, guess why. To stabelize handheld it is much easier when you can put the EVF to your eye, use stabilise lense and  in camera 5 axis stabilisation. Else you have to fiddle with a loop, take it off when shooting stills. For 90 % of your stills, you will get better quality with Sony, except the extreme action picture one takes where extreme AF is absolutely crucial-

1Dc is a much clumsier solution the the Sony alternative.   FYI - I will keep the 1Dx for extreme sports/wildlife  with my tele lenses. But change all normal photographing (and of cource video) to Sony as the picture quality is better, less heavy etc.

PS I have invested some time in grading competence and there is no problem to get what I want-

  16. I posted my heat testing results on DVXuser (mine was the camera that turned off without warning).

Further testing yesterday with an external power supply and a cable battery adapter, and there's no difference in overheating. Again around 27 minutes in S35 and about 48 mins (with a 1min break at 29mins) in FF. I did notice that in S35 4K mode, that it did sometimes overheat without first getting a temperature warning icon.

And testing with USB power wasn't enough to to keep the camera on.

Anyone looking at the A7R2 for video primarily, and sinking £2500 into it is mad.  If you want the best camera for stills with interesting manual focus lenses like rangefinder glass then the a7r2 is it, period.  The raw files I'm seeing from my A7R2 are astounding.  The best image I've seen.  it also shoots video.

The image from the a7s internal 1080p is as good as the 4k image from the A7R2.  the a7s is now less than half the price of the a7r2.  if video is your primary purpose for the camera, a7s cant be beat.

I have both cameras, A7s with ShoGun and now A7r2. Obviously 1080p on A7s is not as detailed as 4k on A7r2. the A7r2 is a much more practical package the a7s with ShoGun. If you are mainly in one location, the external recorder works, but moving around and taking shorter clips, its a hassle. And with FE lenses, you get better stabilisation then with Canon lenses mounted on A7r2. I use the 24-70 if I want to be compact, but my new favourite is the FE 28-135. You will then have a video range from 28 to 200mm by using FF and S35.  And found out it also take very good still images !   Even for video I would pick A7r2 today over A7s (only better for high ISO), however I guess A7s2 will be even better for video (maybe higher frame rates). But if you want to shoot stills as well - no doubt a7r2 !!!

you can look at 4k video here : https://youtu.be/PbyDqby-oqY

and some stills here : https://asmundma.smugmug.com/Photography/A7r2-test/i-qHfjcfB/A

  17. No they will use a Panasonic, a Canon, a JVC, a Samsung, or even another Sony, a camera at the same range but doesn't unexpectedly stop due to over heating. It's not normal for camera cheaper than FS7s/F55s to not reliably record video. That's an extreme excuse, being cheaper than an F55.

We've been shooting thousands of hours on 550Ds, 60Ds, 70Ds, 5Ds, for 5+ years, recording 5-6 hours a day straight for months consequtively and never seen an overheating warning, certainly nothing ever happened to make us stop recording and cool the camera down.

My GH4 is behaving the same way, even Sony's own A7s I shot on for hours a few weeks daily under 51 degree celsius never gave up on me. This is not normal when most of the owner from day one are getting overheating stopping and can't record video continuously. A whole lot different from having tens of people having overheating situations among of hunderds of thousands of shooters who never had an overheating issue shooting features, commercials, docs, for years and years.

However, the 7D model (the original 7D) was the only camera from Canon DSLRs that tended to give overheating warnings to a number of people over the boards, it generated a worry over the web at the time of announcing (it was the first s35 video camera, after the 5D so was quite important in the history of video), but them the worries were put to rest after using it a while, it's a brick. I shot a lot on 7D and it certainly was no different than a 5D or 550D, doesn't stop recording in 20-30 mins or even hours on a job. It did give warnings to some people though unlike and more than all other Canon DSLRs.

Let's see more tests. However from what I am seeing from virtually all testers, the camera cannot be used to record video for longer than 30 mins reliably and is hit and miss, making things even worse (it would be better if it had a constant reliable recording time of say 15 minutes than being un-predictable)

For sure its not good news, some reports it also overheat over hdmi. I have both camras, so will try to test out.
