  1. Ah yes, but you snipped out all the important stuff from the post such as the 5D MK III is a hacked stills camera and all the ergonomics and workflow issues the BMPCC has.

You also run into diminishing returns once you get up to the image quality of Alexa at 2K.  There is a point where resolution is so high upping it further is not a good use of your resources... The Canon 5D MK III is not at that point.

An Alexa is not to an Epic what a stock 5D MK III is to a Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100.  There are still a lot of questions about the Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100 that need to be answered but it is possible that when you step back and look at this camera holistically it trounces the 5D MK III and the BMPCC and does it for less.  Now it isn't going to necessarily have the low light performance or the shallow depth of field but in a lot of general shooting it has the potential to stun.  Personally after looking at the Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100 I felt it has one of the most significant improvements of image quality I've seen in that price range.  The thing is no nonsense sharp.  It doesn't take an expert or pixel peeping to see what that thing does.  And it does it all in an ergonomic nonhacked package.  Pay your two grand.  Buy some memory cards and start shooting.  No hacking, no additional lenses, no ND filter, no adapters.  Just no nonsense out of the box for less than the other two solutions.

I mentioned the Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100.  I didn't say get a Samsung Note 3.  Yes a Samsung Note 3 shoots 4K but no one is saying ALL 4K is better than all 1080p or 2K.  I definitely have an issue with what I saw with some of the highlights in the Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100 video, but assuming those issues were due to contrast set too high, overexposure, etc the camera could be really awesome.

LOL, you are sucked into the resolution war,you are only comparing resolution and sharpness,  it would be unwise to think the AX100's image trounces the mk3/BMPCC's image,

  2. Ok, lets say that I go with the Sigma road.

The Sigma lens don't have aperture ring as far as I know. So this job is gonna be made with the Speedbooster for the short range and I don't know with adapter select that have aperture ring (Novoflex Nikon to MFT adapter is almost $300 in USA) that is not way to expensive ??

I have the EzFoto pro Canon EF to MFT and have a nice aperture ring, I can't find a similar NKN/MFT, so I can used with a nikon to canon adapter but I don't know if this affect the lens depth or anything else far for my short camera knowledge ?!?

  3. Well depends on how you view things. Compared to 35mm full frame used for photography, the gh2 has a crop factor of 2x. But since we are in the world of filmmaking, the standard is super 35mm which is smaller than full frame 35mm, s35 has a crop factor of 1.5x, thus this is my "full frame" Hence I consider this my 1x, and full frame to be less than 1x.If you are trying to match a 5d then you do the 2x crop if you are trying to match, s35 or aps-c, then you do a 1.25x crop.

  4. I own both the 50d and BMPCC, I definitely would choose the BMPCC, but the 50d is great for the price. The dynamic range of the BMPCC is a huge benefit over the 50d's in my opinion, as you can see, the blacks on the 50d are crushed. In terms of color, I do agree that the BMPCC raw needs to be pushed more, but I do believe that the BMPCC raw contains more color information as it is a 12 bit log raw that unpacks to 16 bit linear in resolve as opposed to the 50d's 14bit. Nonetheless you can't go wrong with either camera. Both are great values for their prices and that is why I'm keeping my 50d.

  5. Yes but wider lens = grater DOF. By getting closer to the subject you are only redressing the difference in DOF, not getting a shallower DOF than without the speed booster. If the framing is the same both with and without the speed booster, the DOF will also be the same. This is because the focal length and the f-stop are multiplied by the same number (x0.6 or whatever it is...)

But in real world use/disregarding the technical aspects, the speedbooster makes it just like shooting with an aps-c dslr in terms of DOF, just 1 2/3 stops brighter.

  6. "For those shooting on DSLRs … remind yourself that no F0.74 DSLR glass exists"

    Isn't this a bit meaningless?

The Speed Booster just helps bring the Pocket in line with larger sensors in terms of light gathering ability. The Pocket has a Super16mm sized sensor: f0.74 on S16 is a very different proposition to f0.74 on APS-C or full frame.

An f1.2 lens on a Super35 sensor is going to gather more light than an f1.2 on a Super16 sensor. All the Speed Booster does is redress the balance. Yes the SB widens the FOV, but you're not getting the effect of a 0.74 lens on a larger sensor - it is still a S16mm sized sensor that is receiving that (more concentrated) light.

Hopefully someone can put this a bit more clearly than I have, but I think it is an important point ...

Low light abilities has to do more with pixel pitch, etc, not the sensor size. That is why the low light from the pocket camera is very comparable to the low light capabilities of the 2.5k BMCC

  7. Great review. You answered a Iot of questions. I love my pocket camera. I was on the fence about what to get, the canon version or Nikon version of the Sigma 16-35. The reason being, I wanted to use it on the 4k version when it comes out and I have the fs700 too. But Im pretty sure I'll go with the Nikon version for the sake of the Speedbooster. While I do like the build quality I'm wondering if anyone noticed the lens release button seems to have play but doesn't effect any performance. The pin works, locks great, they press and depresses perfect. I just noticed this tiny rattle and found it to be the lens release button. Should I call them about this? If its normal then I don't mind it, if not I'd like to get it fixed. Thanks

You can always adapt nikon lenses to ef with full aperture control but not the other way around, that is why I buy almost all my lenses in Nikon mount.

The play in the release button is normal, every pocket camera has it.

  8. Why did one of the replies say this? Is there something inherently wrong with the BMPCC's motion?
"And I'm not talking about stabilization issues. The intra-frame motion - of people walking, for example - isn't good at all. It reminds me of the stutterframe look of 8mm home movies from the 1950s. It'sbad.

The picture quality is fairly nice, yes, and I'm sure it grades nicely - but with motion like that, I'd never consider buying it.'

  9. Yes it works. I have one similar. The aperture of the lens is controlled mechanically by the lever on the side of the adapter.

That's why I bought the Nikon version of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8... Can use it on my EF BMCC and Canon 7D, whilst using it on my Speed Booster F mount, since the EF Speed Booster has seemingly been lost in space.

BTW Not all Nikon adapters work. You need the Nikon F / G adapter, with the lever, not just a standard F mount for the old AI/S lenses.

Thanks Andrew! I am assuming the one I linked is the correct kind of adapter as it has a mechanism to control the aperture lever? Do you think the nikon version is a better investment as it has the ability to be manually controlled when the canon is electronic only, thus allowing it to work on a wider range of camera in the future?

  10. I plan on getting the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 in a nikon mount as I plan on getting a blackmagic cinema MFT camera in the future and using it with a nikon to MFT speedbooster. However I am currently shooting with canon cameras and was wondering if this adapter will work even though the tech specs for the sigma state that it uses a Nikon F mount. http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Adapter-D-Type-EOS-Camera/dp/B008BBIBOM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384817119&sr=8-1&keywords=nikon+g+to+ef
