1. Depreciation is only happening more and more quickly though, as technology progresses at an exponential rate. I've been excited for a year or two now at the prospect of finding an alexa on ebay in 10-20 years for 50 quid. But by that time it isn't exciting, because something new and amazing has been invented.    I had a conversation with my old man asking him why he isn't buying up all the old tech he dreamed of as a kid now it costs pittance. He doesn't because now we have plasma TV's with HD broadcasts, iphones, DSLRs, etc.    An F35 would be really great right now, but I wonder how long until it becomes genuinely obsolete?
2.   Well it looks soft as shit to me. It looks to resolve virtually the same in 1080p S35 mode as it does in 4K.
3.   The comparison is completely true. I find the 4k coming out of the 1DC to be just as underwhelming as the 1080p out of the 550d, if not more so. It's over 10 grand and still only a compressed 8 bit stream for gods sake!      Did they even replace the 1DX optical viewfinder for an electric one that you can actually use to shoot video with..?
4. I think since the 550d canon has used a business model based on conservation and strong marketing in order to survive, whereas other companies are trying to innovate to stay ahead of the game. Unfortunately, due to the way the world is constructed, marketing tends to be the most powerful tool there is. Hence the success of canons DSLR's in the video realm, considering how piss poor they really are for video. Great for stills though.. I suppose.. compared to a mirrorless at least..       Well it's currently not July 2014 and I'm not talking about broadcasting a GH2 at 4k. I'm not going to buy a camera now, to do what I need it to do in a years time (and end up paying probably 95% of the cost of the camera in R+D).    If the 1DC does proper 4k then my 550d does proper 1080p. (That's a joke by the way. Both cameras use definitions of 4k and 1080p developed by canon respectively, that do not permeate or reconcile with the rest of the world.)
5. So in real life, how is this camera actually any better than a GH2? In fact for my uses I'd say its actually considerably worse.  ^_^
6. Why the hell would you want a 1DC? I can shoot amazing video with a GH2 and amazing photographs with a 550D.   Am I missing something here.. have people suddenly started caring? The last I heard, most people are still wowed by a DVD.
7.
Again if we take the view that it is JUST content that is important, there's no motivation for filmmakers to put any artistry into their camera work and cinematography. A disaster. If we take the view that it is JUST image quality that matters and that the camera is the most important thing, you lose the motivation to work on the content and just churn out pretty timelapses. Is this balance so difficult for people to grasp? Why is every argument in 2012 polarised, be it about cameras, politics, music, anything...
Because western culture is based upon binary oppositions. Middle grounds do not exist within our thinking.
I know this is not that relevant to the article but when I saw the shot on the article it just struck me. Male gaze!
Haha excellent!
8. Very interesting. Based on similar calculations, my home cinema consisting of a 720p native DLP projector on about an 80 inch screen would only benefit those sitting closest to the screen if going to a 1080p model. From my usually sitting position in the room it would theoretically make no difference. 4k in this instance would be completely pointless. I suggest the same for most homes, be it a TV or home cinema. Only on gigantic screens, sat very close do you need anything more than 1080p and if you do the chances are you are going to want 4k.
9. True, but that appears to me to be more down to barrel distortion than anything else? The flares are nice and dreamy though.
10. Why is the bokeh so spherical, instead of the usual horizontal bokeh I associate with anamorphic cinema?
