1. id suggest making it for your own enjoyment and with intention of using it yourself. you will find many people will say they will want one when you are done, then complain that the price is too high - not understanding the basic fundamentals of how much highly specialist manufacturing techniques cost when put into a non mass produced context. Good luck with it.

  2. One question here that I have to ask... what is the point of all this troubles if the NEX cameras have basically the same res and moiré problems as the Canons? I mean the bitrate won't change how the processor works. Made sense for the GH2 but not now. Am I missing something?

this is not the case. canons are old technology and old sensors. res is vastly different. they cannot be put in the same league as the nex range imo. the nex5n can handle 60p full hd. meaning if it can be written it could also handle data rate of 120p 720. lets not even bring the rx100 into the equation. this stamps on everything bar the hacked gh2 for detail. if it gets the hack i'll be looking at removing the fixed zeiss lens and adding a rollei qbm mount ready to accept my distagon 25mm+anamorphic adaptor. the small sensor will be a superb match for anamorphic where smaller sensors are better and shallow dof is less of a demand for the cinematic look..

Maybe i didn't express my idea clearly, (english is not my native language) i don't mean to disturb you and i'm very sorry if you take it personally. Is true that my opinion was based on what i read about the Metabones adapter, and i don't know if you publish better results later on, and now has you erased the result test maybe i never know.

I been following you work since you first promoted on DVXUser too, and if you can check my comments i always been positive about your work, the only negative fact, with i give you all the rights on this, is the fact the cost of manufacture will be expensive. I even follow your Ebay sale with the hope to find the funds and buy the case to try for my self.

richg101, i never put your work or your name on doubt and i really hope in the future with foggyflute can make another great contribution to the independent filmmakers.

Sorry if i appeared annoyed. i am not:0), I just don't like trying to do these things online due to so many factors affecting how things are perceived. So many people took the product as a commercial venture. thanks for your enthusiasm - I too wish things were cheaper. I'd like to think the upcoming hack might mean the housing becomes more of a mass appeal and in this case I could look at a hard tooling option - lowering overall costs significantly. it will always be the case that people want more than can be done at reasonable costs. the metabones modification has near killed me - and then they decide to release one without that stupid permanent tripod mount!:) Indeed I should have considered before posting results of a beta test and should have known some people would take it as a serious test.

As said, I think it is worth another person attempting a project similar. it is certainly a challenge and is a lot of fun, if a bit tiring and worrying that all meets the demands of the guys backing it. The shipping of the units is going to be in the next few days and I am looking forward to the feedback. I think people will be very happy because I am making sure the end result is something I would buy myself.

..still havent seen any footage of this tested and working.

How can anyone be expected to donate if it looks like you could be lying right out of the gate?

Not saying you are, I just don't understand why there isn't any footage available to view.

you need to read up on what is involved. the money is to pay for cameras so he can break the encryption. The hacker has proved his skills - skills that not one other person has shown since speak of hacking a nex started back in 2010. We are not paying for the guy to create a marketing campaign. This is not a business proposal or a corporate strategy. Once each encryption is broken into and open to the world, there are many people who will be able to develop patches. Lots of people have donated including me. if people were not so negative things would move faster. you get ripped off 10 times over by insurance companies, banks, tax etc. yet you are worried about maybe losing $10,$15, even a tiny $50..? The Sony F3 guys paid over £1000 for a firmware update to allow them to use S-LOG. And they had paid over £15000 for their camera before. Think ourselves lucky someone is doing this at all. we need community members for this to work. Have some trust - if it goes wrong then tell me I was wrong and I'll admit. Until then maybe join the others who have accumulated over $1000 in less than a day and help to make it happen if it is something that interests you enough to comment on it.

I can even build watercool, but it's ridiculous for this thing.
I looked at creating a micro water cooling system in the early stages. it involved removal of the lcd screen and relocation. howver I decided on a system which didnt need any special modification of the nex5n from the end user.

I think you should continue to develop some ideas and hold on for the new era of cameras. then use any connections you have with manufacture in vietnam to create a cost effective housing as a direct development. Id be excited to work with you if you needed any asistance.

for what i know the previous case experience do not resolve this problem complety
This is not true. During beta testing of a different cooling mod to suit a custom case for a guy wanting the metabones adaptor support the case did not perform as before. this issue has now been rectified with a modification. Why people cant read information properly is beyond me! I clearly stated my results were during 'torture testing' of a new system for a custom project worst case scenarios, with cheap card, low battery, warm environment, non optimised airflow.

Force cooling is a very effective method of removing overheat. But you must also make sure you use proper sony batteries and a HG-Duo / sandisk gold 95mb/s card alongside this. a lot of heat comes from the buffer memory and using lower charged batteries. Optimum is 70% or higher. you can get almost 1.5 hours of recording from a single fully charged battery before it reaches 70%. sensor is easy to keep cool with fan addition and a metal lens adaptor, you need to make sure the rest of the camera is running efficiently with proper cards for HD video. any old class 10 card wont manage it. keep that buffer clear! use the 8bit parallel of the pro hg-duo cards.

due to ignorance from forum members I decided to delete the results seeing as people were unable to read it properly and were selectively seeing all the negatives and not taking into account the facts!.

This said, foggy flute should go ahead with the project. if you can machine some alloy and do all electronics, covering paypal charges, shipping, etc they do it. but it will cost more than you think to create a working article ready for the merciless beasts of the online film making world. All I know is that myself and the good backers of my little project will be relishing the benefits of all the added features such as large foot print, lens clamp to take weight of heavy lenses, fan cooling, all in one setup with large screen etc. I wouldnt have done all this work for no profit (i have lost money) if the physical gains were not great! When/if the hack lives up to its potential, you will all be praying for more to be made, but you missed out by being too picky. Lets hope this Foggy flute can create what you will need because I cant afford to do another batch of my own housings! They were a special treat.

    Quick update.

Looks like we have found a member of the Magic Lantern team to oversee the donations. Big thanks to Malcolm for that.

Once that is set up at PayPal, I'll put a donate button on the forums and once the funds reach the required amount our hacker will be getting his test bodies to sacrifice on the alter of NEX hacking :)

cheers for the plugging of this Andrew. It's great that a system has been assembled to allow us to contribute to the cause. I'm sure your front page article will bring more than enough backers for Someone1.00 and anyone else that comes in on the project

This thread says tested and working, but I have yet to see any footage...
moaner. whether it works or not probably won't affect you anyway. The higher bitrate hack is simple to the guys who did the GH2 hack.. it's the amazing job of cracking the decryption that is big news here - this is proved since he has offered the modified firmware on this forum. The decryption is what has haulted any development so far. If another person on another forum says they have a friend who has hacked it, I believe them. Why lie about it? If one guy proved he can crack the decryption, why can no one else do it independently for themselves, going one step further and writing a modified firmware?
  9. a century 1609 adaptor(very easy to find-they pop up every few months), redstan filter thread adaptor and a tokina atx +0.4 can be had together for sub £500-600. Add a cheap 28mm taking lens and you got a very wide, usably sharp and 'single focus ring' anamorphic setup . the best bit? you get 2.35:1 on a 16:9 sensor with no cropping required.

I am yet to see a better value for money, simple to use, compact anamorphic combo. Its great because everyone desperately claws for the LA7200 and ignores the century 1609 adaptors. I saw a setup with 55mm mounting thread, and 3 diopters go for £350 a few months ago.

I love mine because I can actually carry it around on my camera all day.

not the best sharpness at below f4, but the benefits outweigh this imo.
  10. i thought it looks really nice. as stated the noise is more 'grain' than noise itself. I think it would benefit the marketing efforts if we were to be provided with some more exciting imagery. Some dynamic lighting, maybe some fast paced steadicam stuff? An alternate video similar to the RX100 review sample by Andrew here would be really good at showing off the camera. Lets see some beautiful scenery instead of lack lusture mid day suburban environments! The camera deserves it!

Not seen this one before. interesting because he says he can rack focus with just the taking lens. I guess with such a long barrel the use of wide lenses is a no go, and thus he has probably never been able to use this indoors at wide aperture where rack focusing is required more often.

Wonder how much it will go for based on the brand, the 1.5x squeeze and the sellers suggestion that you can rack focus with just the taking lens.
  12. https://vimeo.com/46815261

Just upgraded to Vimeo plus so wanted to make a 5 minute video at 1080p of some of my stuff over the last few months. Mostly shot on the lovely nex 5n. Using Contax Zeiss, Rollei Zeiss, Olympus OM and Century Anamorphic 1.33x + tokina AT-X +0.4

do the anamorphic shots look less crisp? If anything to me they look better thanks to the vertical scaling to 800px high. Not as sharp, but certainly more detailed. The non anamorphic shots are just cropped to match.

Which of the shots stand out as most obviously 'morphed'???
  13. This type of innovation is only possible with the initial revenue earned from early investors and pre orders. A lot of the manufacturing bills will have been paid off the back of the pre order revenue. Everyone pre booking will have known this and been prepared - as has been proven by comments from guys who have pre ordered.

The guys being sour won't ever order one of these anyway. -They go with the flow, worried about taking risks, while hoping the innovators fail. When it succeeds they'll change their tune. Only dead fish go with the flow!

Without the chancers and real innovative enthusiastic guys creating and backing this stuff there would be no development, no improvement, and no gains. It would just be grumpy moaners talking the talk without walking the walk.
  14. I watched that documentary and saw similar things to when you watch a documentary about a classic big budget hollywood film from the 1980's. To me thats gotto be a good thing. Once they slam that flat red raw through all the processing it will look a lot less theatrical and a lot more cinematic. The giant carved wood set looks amazing!
  15. it will. there is a knack to using it - at first you think all is in focus then realise you should have focused in a little more. after a week you will get to know the characteristics and nail most shots straight away. peaking tends to work best with less wide lenses such as 35-50mm at larger apertures. the shallower the depth of focus the easier it is to see the focus peaking work. also you need good contrasty lighting conditions so it can pick up edges of subjects.
