1. It's almost ok to go a little overboard wanting things to be the way we want to be. But let's not forget that this is not the final product, it's just a 0.4 version, so at least let's not be so stupid to the point to reach a ultimate conclusion before the product reaches its final version, shall we?
 2.
Hello. For the ones that missed this: (All by Dieter Knüttel) GH3 - 1080 25p 72 Mbps 1600 ISO MOV: https://vimeo.com/49850143
Whether the initial part or the final - most likely the final - shot has the correct exposure, the details that the camera can retain in the wronng exposure is pretty impressive. If you would say that the final exposure was the correct one, the way the beginning looked well illuminated and with decent details for the amount of darkness it really was, I think the camera can hold pretty well and it shows the DR it has.
 3. I think that to say that they prioritize the IQ over multi-aspect means that they were developing a new sensor, multi-aspect just like the GH2 and then they got to know the qualities of the Sony sensor. They didn't have time to ask Sony to make it a bit bigger and at the same time make their mod and have in in time for the GH3. I think that Panasonic made some adjustments in the sensor like the new low pass filter and that's why they called it Live MOS, just like Olympus used to say it was a different sensor since they mod it. It's probably a Sony sensor with some mod to be mode on pair with what Panasonic needed. I mean, I hope that it has the specifics to make the GH3 work properly. Although I would prefer that Panasonic itself made the sensor, that would mean it was really custom made for the GH3 needs more than Panasonic trying to work around the limitations of the sensor that Sony had. Nonetheless I'm still puzzled by the report that says that it's actually multi-aspect but not active because of the firmware. I wonder what happened with the extra 1.15MP of the sensor. It's usual to have some extra pixel that is not actually used by the camera, but more than 1MP? - edit - I just noticed that just like the GH2, the G5 laso has more than 18MP, although only 16MP are used, so it's meaningless to think anything of it. Is the new 240fps readout indication of anything whether it's a new sensor or if's or it's not the Sony's sensor for the OM-D E-M5 or maybe a mod version of that sensor?
 4. Oh Canon, way to go. I wonder how long can Canon keep it up with all the conservationism, I guess that as long people keep buying it feeding them, they have no reason to change. So I question why people support this kind of thing.
 5. I think that - sadly - it's almost possible to confirm that it's not a multi-aspect ratio sensor. In Panasonic's website it says it's possible to take 12MP (4608x2592) images while shooting video, which would be exactly the same size as what you would get with the same width as the normal 4:3 image. In the GH2 you would get a 14MP (4976 x 2800) still from a 16:9 aspect ratio. I still have a little hope, but I guess that's final. I just can't understand why changing that if that was a feat that a lot of people liked and appreciated. - edit - Now that I think about it, this is silly. Unless Panasonic screwed in their own website, it's not a multi-aspect ratio sensor and it's 72Mbps - just confirming since some people are saying 80Mbps. It's interesting that it doesn't matter if it's 24p, 50p, whatever, in All-I it will always be 72Mbps and in IPB it will always be 50Mbps. Doesn't it mean that at 24p you will always get less compression?
 6.
Spec sheet also mentions an 80% slow motion feature. Any comments?
It's 80% of the speed. You shoot in 30p and reproduce in 24p. As far as I know, all the percentages are based on 24p, so the rest is just math.
 7.
Spec says 29min 59s. So without a hack the camera is useless for longer video.
Until they change how they tax it, it will always be less than 30min.
 8.
Until then, I have my hope on upcoming Canon such as the 70D. If they do something similar to the GH3 in terms of video I'm all for it.
I hardly think that Canon will do anything about video in the upcoming cameras at all. They are not giving a damn about video on DSLR anymore. It's easy to tell since people had lots of expectations about the successor of the 5DMKII, but besides some moiré and anti-aliasing improvements - which helped the sharpness -, the resolution, the codec, etc. stayed basically the same. The 5DMKIII should've been the face of their video quality, but that shifted with their EOS C cameras. So I don't really think that the 70D will bring any of that. Canon is clearly just living with the hype they created - deservedly so, I have to say - with the 5DMKII and investing in their new EOS Cinema cameras. But time will tell, Canon have been very conservative about innovation and leaps between the past and the actual generation, at least for video. But people keep buying it just based on hype, so who can blame them completely? Even their Mirrorless solution for photography, just like Nikon, is pretty much just to be there and acquire some knowledge about the technology, bu nothing that really add. But still, people buy it because of the brand, people that don't really know about what's going on, sometimes even people with some knowledge of photography end up with a CaNikon in the end. I know that they have tons of lenses and everything, but why simply settle down? But it's also true that the entry-level user usually buy a camera with the kit lens and the tele-zoom and that's it. I expected more of both Canon and Nikon so I hope that the sales rewards the brands that are pushing forward. I wonder what is gonna happen when the shift between DSLR and DSLM becomes and issue for them, will their mirrorless system have what it takes? I'm not saying that their cameras are bad, just saying that they could have been contributing much more and they may end up paying for that in the future. - a bit off topic, but not completely - I really liked Fuji's strategy, quality glass, they are listening and trying to solve the issues. Fuji XPRO1 was their FIRST generation, it's expected to have some flaws, but they were pretty bold with what they brought to the market, the hybrid viewfinder, the high quality primes instead of crappy kit lens, they came up with a different solution for the sensor, they explored a untouched market forcing the mirrorless market to mature towards something more PRO. Sony is also pushing hard the cameras, at least the bodies, but they have been pretty disappointing when it comes to lenses. They announced the 35mm f/1.8 but they really should address this lens ecosystem issue. Samsung started this WiFi thing and Sony is showing how much more can be accomplished. Samsung really needs to make their cameras right and with the right price. They are overpriced and they always have some issue, slow buffer, slow focus, laggy interface, etc. But at least they have more lenses than Sony and some of them with good quality. I hope that the GH3 can really bring a better DR and I'm looking forward for the actual Olympus PRO camera. MFT are the more mature system of them all and they are slowly getting rid of that "amateur" "toy" "bad performance" stigma. Some people still look at the MFT system with some prejudice but the Olympus OM-D EM-5, the new Panasonic GH3, the Olympus PRO camera and the high quality glass from both Panny and Oly should help consolidate the system. And as result there should be even more support from 3rd parties.
 9.
also i don´t get why anyone wants a dslr after the bmcc is out.
What I don't get in people nowadays is how they think that everybody has to have the exactly same necessity over things and usually - actually always - think that people has the same necessity as them, like it's not possible to have different needs. This kind of discussion pop-up everyday in forums and it's a completely waste of time. BMCC was made mainly for cinema rigs, external battery, the complete set and that's not cheap and I'm saying that because in the interview, the BMCC designer said that the internal battery is a luxury, that the camera was not made for that purpose. The internal battery is just for moments when you need to change things or you want something small for a specific situation, that sort of thing. Not everybody needs nor wants that. Sometimes you need something more practical, for run and gun situations, sometimes you need a smaller package, sometimes you don't have the money, etc. There are several reasons which shows that people have different priorities and different needs. Both BMCC, GH3, the new A99 can share some common market, but at the same time, they also aim at different segments and users. I have a friend that shoots documentaries and for his case in particular, he doesn't need high ISO, shallow DOP and wide DR. That is not his priority, he needs something more practical, with interchangeable lens and built-in ND filters. In this case none of this cameras are that appealing and he prefers an old camera like the Panasonic AF100. It shouldn't be so hard to understand that you* are not the center of the Universe. *generically speaking
 10. I feel a bit sad for the sensor not being a multi-aspect ratio with 1.86x crop when shooting video. I don't really understand, since this was a feat that everybody loved about the GH2. Of course, this may be just an impression from the leaked promo video and this short movie, but let's wait until Monday.
 11.
What really I don't understand is why half of the short movies with a minimum of storyline end up in a guy running for a girl. It's hard to belive that Bruce Logan didn't realize he was doing something seen so many times in the DSLR world since Reverie. It seems technology is filling the gap but plot... so many times is poor. Short movies could be excellent for puzzling stories well told in a handful of minutes, and a good one can really help the promotion message behind it.
I think that the story is just a story, it's hard to come up with a different and mind blowing thing when you probably have little time and the main thing is to show the camera capabilities. So the story isn't something to pay attention, this short movie was made exclusively to show different situations and how the camera handles it, that's the main part. The story doesn't matter at all. If you go there you would start asking, why all the suspense, why the desperation, how can't he reach her, etc. See? It's pointless...
 12. Can someone explain to me why BSI sensors are not used in large sensors camera? Is it just about cost or some technology limitation as well? How much time until we can get large BSI sensors? It makes me want BSI sensor with Global Shutter and very fast read out type of thing... hahaha... What are the benefits of a BSI sensor besides a better low light performance? Better DR as well? What else?
 13. If they kept it under ISO 100~12800, maybe they did so to extend the dynamic range, which makes sense. I just hope it's not a ISO 200~3200 in which you atificially get ISO 100/6400/12800 with DR loss. It's hard to tell, but maybe if this is a Sony sensor, it's not the same as the OM-D E-M5 and it was custom made. Or it's really a Panasonic sensor after all - it will be easy to tell, if Panasonic tries to make it a secret, well, we'll know it's probably Sony's. It will be interesting if it has phase detection inside the sensor like Sony's new sensors. The problem is that Panasonic was struggling in two areas, DR and high ISO, usually you sacrifice a little bit of one to get more of the other, so it's complicated when in the same generation Sony did a better job in both. Of course, Panasonic is better at Video codec, so they made up a little bit in that area. What about the Engine? My dream was Panny's video with Oly's pics, can the new Venus Engine get anything close to what Olympus does? I have to say that even considering all the compression in the video and all that bla bla bla, the pics that were taken with the GH3 in the promo didn't really impress me as much as I wanted. But let's wait until the first shots and previews.
 14. I think it would be interesting to have a native cinema-like 2.39:1 aspect ratio with at least 720p, even though I think that 1080p24 in 2.39:1 is possible. Or an anamorphic lens works better?
 15. Is it possible that the GH3 doesn't have a multi-aspect ratio sensor? That's one of the BIG feats of the GH2, did Panasonic give up on that because they found that Sony's sensor is better? They could have asked for a multi-aspect sensor but maybe they didn't have the time. If I remember well the image for the 16:9 in the GH2 was something like 1.86x crop factor, wasn't it? If it's a Sony's sensor, would it be the same as the OM-D E-M5? If Panasonic could just have an engine as good as Olympus...
 16. I still stand for my wish of a true m4/3 hybrid-hybrid. A true Still/Video Hybrid. Video by Panasonic - I'm considering it would certainly be hacked. Image Processing - and IBIS - by Olympus. It would be THE CAMERA for me. They could make it together as the only m4/3 PRO camera or something, I don't care, make it happen! hehe... But I think that there are more chances that Panasonic improves on stills than Olympus improving the video, but Vitaly's hack could change the scenario. One day...
 17. I'm not sure if someone already talked about this but in a interview, the guy from Black Magic didn't say anything about global shutter, in fact he just discussed rolling shutter. Why wouldn't he talk about it then? It's a feat that a lot of people have been waiting for so long, it would definitely help it sell more. Although I don't think that it won't sell if it's good enough since it's an unexplored market. But it's interesting to know that if there are sensors capable of global shutter, they can also feat rolling shutter. But does that affect the whole DR and low light performance whatever mode it's on? I mean, can you get different DR and ISO performance based on what type of shutter you are using? Because global shutter in a CMOS sensor should diminish the DR and increase the noise in high ISO, right? Actually you can sacrifice high-ISO for DR, maybe they have done that since right now they say it goes up to ISO 1600. And if you consider it's wide DR, it makes sense. All this brings me the GH3, so it can use rolling shutter for pictures and maybe global shutter for videos, I think that they can do 1080p60 with a new processor without problems. But then we have to question how many MP? I don't think that it will increase from 16MP, but shouldn't they make it 10~12MP, maybe? Unless they can really handle the DR and high ISO well, but it seems unlikely, Panasonic never exceeded in those areas. I think that the least the GH3 has to perform is something like the Olympus OM-D E-M5.
 18. Have you considered buying an adapter and using other brands' lenses? With the adapter you can buy fairly good used lenses. You can buy the old ones, which are usually cheaper - since you won't be able to use the AF anyway. Unless MF is a problem for you, I think it's a pretty nice and cheap solution. Just remember that m4/3 crop factor is 2x.
 19.
Thanks dude. Also see here... http://www.eoshd.com/content/3576/re-wrap-avchd-clips-to-quicktime-in-no-time
Thanks Andrew! That's the one I had problem with and it seems that it has to do with Lion OS. I looked after the solution out there but there was no answer for the permission problem. So I posted how to "solve" that problem, there are probably other ways to do, but changing the permission was easy and within my knowledge... hehe...
 20. AVCHD is kind of a Video Editing nightmare and it's not so simple to find a way to convert it to a more video-editing-friendly format. There are a lot of paid applications, some of them with Trial versions - but who wants a watermarked video? I couldn't find a topic like this out there explaining how to do this via Freeware, so that's why I decided to create this one.

If you have the camera, you can import it directly through iMovie, but the problem is that iMovie doesn't recognize the 1080p 60 fps videos, so here it is what I found so far for 1080p60 videos.
[br]

Re-wrapping seems to be the best way, because it's faster and you don't pass the video through a recompression. - RewrapAVCHD: it outputs a m4v video with AC3 audio - Media Converter (http://media-converter.sourceforge.net/) : it outputs MOV file with uncompressed audio You have to add a preset “Re-wrap AVCHD for Quicktime with uncompressed audio”. The problem is that in Lion OS it shows a message:
You don't have permission to save the file “Media Converter” in the folder “ Application Support”
To prevent it you have to go to Library>Application Suport>Get Info, unlock and change the Admin permission from Read Only to Read & Write and then install the new preset. After that you can restore to Read Only if you want.
[br]

You can also converts it with: - Handbrake - SmartConverter (via App Store)
Some users may want a direct conversion to ProRes format, but I didn't find a freeware for that, but you can still converts it to ProRes after this re-wrap/conversion step. There are probably more options out there, so feel free to share it!
 21.
What I do to be able to edit nicely on mac is convert to Apple Prores using Quicktime (before you have to install  this plugin https://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/dload/avccam_impt/agree_e.htm) Then I conform to 25p using Cinema Tools. Hope it helps. Regards. Enrique.
Thanks! I'll take a look. So far, I found a software called RewrapAVCHD, it rewraps the MTS file into m4v and so does the Handbrake, but I think that the Handbrake actually converts it. The difference is that with the Handbrake you have control over it, with the RewrapAVCHD you have no control over it, you can't choose codec, quality, etc. Is there a difference between conforming the video and importing it as a 60p and making a slo-mo? Let's say I conform it from 60p to 24p and I import as a 60p and slow it down 2,5x to make it 24p - as the rest of the project is 24p. Is there any difference in quality or more like a workflow preference? Thanks!
 22. I hope I'm doing a mess for posting this here, but as there was a part that was converted from 1080p50 to 1080p25, I wanted to ask. What's the best way to convert the AVCHD 2.0 1080p60/50 so video editors on Mac can understand it? I thought that as the iMovie understands 1080p30 imported direct from the camera, it would be the same for the 1080p60, but that doesn't work. So far I only found some paid softwares. Is there a way to do it with freewares? Thanks!
