1. @TC - I don't believe them when they say something can't be done anymore LOL. A1ex, g33go, 1%, Smeangol and co are working wonders. Huge respect to them for opening up such opportunities for us all.
2. It's a dump from the camera. Nothing is being written into firmware. It is happening because you are likely running a development build and not a full release. You can safely delete the file from your card.
3. @TC - The devs have been trying to get 12 and 10 bit compression working but it seems like a dead end atm. One of the lead developers @g3gg0 has just confirmed there is no VFP in the Digic processor so it can't compute floating point calculations in hardware. The data rate is so high with raw that the CPU looks like it cannot handle the computations in software but they won't give up trying. I think it's safe to say that the ML team are masters at proving the impossible is possible.
4. I'm perfectly happy to 'forget it' :) p.s. insulting someone in another language is quite low. BTW my wife is Russian ;)
5. @rommex - I have the 50d in my hands and compile my own ML ;) You cannot record raw playback through HDMI :) ....YET! See my previous answer to understand why.
6. Where did you read that? The Mk3 can output a clean HDMI signal but it's NOT capable of recording the raw output. HDMI doesn't allow for it. The HDMI output on most EOS bodies (all except the 5d3) kills Live View when you hit record (when recording normal H.264 video) and the output drops to SD (except on 7d and 1d where it stays 720p) on the HDMI monitor. It also has overlays but ML can kill them. I'm not sure what happens when recording raw video but my guess is that it keeps both screens on because it's not going through the H.264 encoder. Needs testing to be sure. Regarding playback. You can currently playback the last raw file but its B&W and about 5fps. You will need a laptop on-set to convert the raw files to DNG. There is a windows app in development called RAWanizer (by @Marten on the ML forum) using the raw2dng app (developed by ML chief developer A1ex) and available on the ML forum that converts raw files to DNG and TIFF AND renders 1/2 or full res H.264 or DNxHD proxies. The current build also allows for some customization and neatly converts, labels and sorts your DNGs into folders AND it's very FAST!... oh, it's also FREE ;) http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5557.0 I believe there is also a Mac app too but I don't use Macs.
7. You can put FD glass on an EF camera but it will increase the focal length x1.25 and you lose around 1 stop of light. It also has to pass through more glass in the adapter itself and most that I tested were not very good, making the image very soft. It's not worth it. M42/Nikon = no problem :) Q. Sell your GH2/3 and get a 50d? A. Don't be silly now! ;) The GH's haven't suddenly gone bad. I wouldn't sell mine if I had one. They still rock and I still want a hacked GH2 for some things!
8. ISO - guess again (sorry, I'm cheating because I already know it) re: resolution. It will go vertical by at least another 100px
9. Personally, I don't really care about the top-end-gear-to-price arguments. I'm VERY low-end but my 4 year old DSLR camera shoots raw 14bit video! That's all I need to say :)
10. There is every reason for Canon to protect the C500 - The future C600. They won't go that far as it will endanger their margins from professionals and rental houses.
11. A bit of an update re: 50d http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5586.msg40365#msg40365 some sample videos and DNGs including some shot on a Kowa B&H 2x anamorphic courtesy of @JulianH. It beats the 5d2 raw video to my eyes but needs an a/b test. Very minimal moire in comparison :) and I think it's up there with the GH2/3 for detail even recorded at this reduced resolution (there is more to be squeezed). Still a lot of work to do and bugs to fix. Poor @Smeangol (50d dev). I'm not sure he knows what he's gotten into :D
12. LOL true! Maybe they never even thought of it. The devs would have for sure but the marketing bosses and tech support probably saw no need for raw video in a consumer stills camera. They were probably too hung up on developing H.264 for DSLRs, development of which appeared to have stopped when the first 5d2 rolled off the production line. Card speeds and affordability were no where near what they are now so that was probably a limiting factor in their thinking too. Wouldn't you just love to be a fly-on-the-wall at a Canon dev meeting in the last few days  My bet is that they will HAVE TO get the C300 shooting at 4k and that we'll see a much improved codec in the consumer bodies soon... purely as a reaction to this. Either way, Canon are back in prime position thanks to someone else's work! (remind you of anything?... Reverie)
13.     I have a 50d and the raw rec update compiled but still waiting for a CF card to arrive. I'm sure there will be some test video within the next 24 hrs. It's already recording up to 4gb without any corrupt frames. There are one or 2 shots of low light raw dng bursts but no proper test shots for raw video yet. I'll be on it as soon as my card arrives. We still have a couple of small issues that have already been fixed in the 5d3 and 600d so they'll need porting to the 50d but it's looking good :) Aliasing and moire are a bit of an unknown factor atm but I'm pretty sure it won't look bad. 50d ML 1080p H.264 doesn't seem to suffer from moire and aliasing as much as cameras with the 18mpx sensor but again, it's another thing to test.
14. The 5d3 is amazing (as it should be considering the price) but for those on lesser bodies that use SD cards the current state of play with ML means there is a frame size restriction for continuous shooting of 720p and below due to SD buffering which is a hardware limitation. Even when upscaled the smaller files can still just about equal Canon's H.264 but there is a crop factor involved. There is however a secret weapon for those looking to keep costs low. The good old 50d! The 50d has basically the same internals as the 5dmkII but an 15mpix APS-C sensor. It has the same Digic 4 processor and more importantly it saves to CF cards (up to UDMA6 speeds). Raw frame sizes from the 50d are a little smaller than the 5dMkII at 1592x1062px (no crop) and  1992x1080 (1:1 crop = 5x zoom) but that is actually a good thing as, like the 5dMkII it has a slower CF controller than the 5dMkIII. With the smaller frame sizes and ability to write to CF at up to 88MB/s it can handle continuous shooting with no crop, while the 5dMkII must rely on the (work in progress) 12/10bit compression hack to get it's full uncropped, unrestricted recording. Now the killer. The 50d is cheap! I mean VERY cheap. You can pick them up for less than the cost of a 600d and probably the 650d and 700d and they are rugged, larger, semi-pro magnesium alloy bodies with up to 6.3fps burst shooting, back focus and a host of other cool features not available on the consumer cameras and when 1592x1062 is upscaled and cropped to 1080p it is a magnitude better than H.264 for color and detail. Basically it kicks it's ass! Raw video for the 50d is still a work in progress but it is working: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5586.0 and makes the 50d a better option for raw video than the rebels. However, the 50d did not include native H.264 recording. ML remedied this to give 1080p 30p some time ago but there is no 720p/60p. It's a balancing act but on paper (and in reality it seems) the 50d is certainly a better option for raw video shooting. Beating even the UHS-I SD enabled 650/700d, 60d and 6d. My advice - get one while you still can ;)
15. In John's comments he states there is no Anti-aliasing filter in his prototype hence the moire issue http://johnbrawley.w...k/#comment-1609 but that makes you wonder if a) there will be an AA filter in the production camera and b ) will it soften things up too much. Love the latest clip even if it is Vimeo compressed. Beautiful detail and sharpness. The DR is fantastic in ProRes 422 (HQ) so imagine this thing shooting raw. Wow! Saving my pennies ;)
16. Eran Stern does a nice tut for HDR toning that can dramatically lift detail in Premier Pro http://www.sternfx.com/tutorials/106 Works great :)
17.
Andy - 1/5  ??? Thank you and please try again  ;D
Oh dear :s I blame the Mulled Wine :p
18. I think #2 is so obviously the GH2 ;-) 1. Nikon J1 2. GH2 3. 5D MKII 4. A65 5. HX9
19. Hi Andrew, Nice write up about the new ML. It is incredible what Alex & Co are achieving now for sure. I'm looking forward to your forthcoming shootout but might I suggest you also include the 'Cinema Picture Style' from cineplus.ch on the Canons as a comparison with the GH2's baked-in preset styles because it does not need a LUT and is by far the best looking PS with the least noise for the Canons IMHO. I'm not connected to the maker/author or anything but I highly recommend trying it. Andy
