  1. yeah, i'm the same. I only use the mic for reference audio. bought it for the Pocket because the built-in mic was trash. Wanted something better for syncing double system. I like your lav idea. I might look into doing that. prefer low profile solutions like that.
  2. close. it's a rode videomicro. $60. i originally bought it for the pocket to get better reference audio. it's very, very good. I actually haven't tried the micro cinema camera's mic yet to compare the two. But I hear it's improved over the Pocket.
  3. Something I noticed, I have two bmpcc/ef speed boosters and one was soft in the corners while the other was barely so. Noticed this with my Sigma 18-35mm wide open. Have been using the sharper of the two on my Micro ever since noticing that. The soft-cornered one gets to chill with my Pocket.
  4. 12mm is pretty wide. I have a speedbooster on it that makes it nearly equivalent to a Super35 sensor, which is a field of view I'm more used to. and I have it rigged like this currently. when i go shoulder mounted the monitor gets rigged to the front with a Noga arm connected to two handles, and a shoulder pad slides onto those rear rods where the monitor is now. whole thing weighs roughly 7lbs and that's a fairly heavy lens on it. it's just enough weight to counter "micro jitters" without making it a beast to lug around.
  5. just my opinion, but yes, I haven't turned my GH4 on since November when I bought a Pocket. Just finished shooting a short doc with it. And now I have the Micro which I prefer in many ways to the Pocket. But yes, being that I was always finishing in 2K or 1080p, I don't miss the 4K so much. Would be great to have it all but color and DR come first if I have to choose.
  6. Fair point, for sure. one benefit to it needing to be rigged out is that it lands at 5 to 8 lbs depending on what you add, which is just enough weight to nix those micro jitters you see in handheld clips from ultra light cameras. and with the Micro you *could* use a cheaper monitor option, like an Apurture VS-1 FineHD because unlike the Pocket, the Micro will let you send a "Video" feed over HDMI, while capturing in "Film" mode. With the Pocket, you needed an external monitor with LUT capability to see anything other than the flat BMDFilm image you were capturing. First thing I noticed about the 60p was that it had beautifully rendered clean motion, unlike what you see with many DSLRs where there is often a smeariness, regardless of shutter angle. I wonder if that's due to capturing in h.264? not sure, but it always irritated me.
  7. i believe thats one way to do it. I opted to have them send me the part so i can make the swap myself.
  8. they won't charge you for the new rear mount. they'll just send it to you. no shipping charge either unless you want it overnight. it will have less restrictive tolerances. oh and I have the WC cage too. the buried rec button doesn't bother me. In fact, i like that I know I just need to jam my thumb in that little corner and press without looking to start recording. but I can see how others wouldn't like it.
  9. I have a loose one and a tight one. The latter still goes on my Micro but it is little stiff. If you want, Metabones is still offering new back mounts if your fit is too tight. I know because I just had them send me one yesterday by emailing support through their web site. no charge.
  10. I like it at LOW. nice to have the visual feedback. and it looks kinda cool glowing like that from under the WC cage I have for it. but yeah, you can turn it OFF if needed.
  11. i've only set up a comparison once. i have frames of a lamp with the light clipping on the nearby wall and I can't see any meaningful difference. and when i made that exposure adjustment and more or less color matched them, they looked nearly identical to me in terms of DR. But take that with a grain of salt. DR wasn't really what i had set out to test. Why? Are you?
  12. it was only a .15 adjustment. i don't know what that equates to exactly but less than a 1/3 of a stop, i'm sure. barely a difference but noticeable side by side.
  13. for rolling shutter, i want to be able to stack the cameras on top of each other. haven't done that yet. for battery life I didn't time it out but I'd say it's in the neighborhood of 2.5 times longer than the BMPCC battery would last.
  14. Did a side by side with my Pocket & Micro. BMPCC Speed Booster + Sigma 18-35mm. Here's what I saw. No earth-shattering differences but differences nonetheless. My feeling is that you would *have* to view them side by side to know which was which. • Noise is mildly reduced on the Micro and a touch more monochromatic. • Moire is also slightly less aggressive on the Micro. Maybe 20% less? • Micro exposes a hair lower than the Pocket. An adjustment of -.15 on the exposure slider in DaVinci on the Pocket footage brought them in line. • Slight color difference between the two. An adjustment on the tint slider of about 6 or 7 points evened them out.
  15. ha, look who doesn't want anyone going off on a tangent. love you, man.
  16. it's okay. i doubt either of those two read this forum. they won't be offended.
  17. and that works for me at home where I have very fast broadband. but I went to friend's place recently and selecting 1080p on a slow connection, where you'd expect to wait for it to load before playing, didn't work. despite having selected '1080p' it behaved as though it were set to 'auto' forcing you to play the video at a reduced resolution.
  18. noticed this too. as you said, even when selecting 1080p from the drop down menu, it seems to stay in 'auto'. pretty lame.
  19. I have my eye on what Richard Gale is developing. And I believe his sensor technology is sourced from the same that's found in Blackmagic's Cinema and Pocket cameras. http://www.richardgaleoptics.uk/forbes70-large-format/
  20. I just finished working on Triple 9... mastered and released in 2K.
  21. you're making an assumption about me... i'm not an advocate for or against piracy. i've only relayed my personal experiences with it. the day i discovered the torrents of my movie I had two thoughts. First was, "this is amazing!!!" and the second was, "shit! what if my distributor finds out?" I see the good, i see the bad. I've declined an invitation from the MPAA to speak on indies' behalf because, like most things, i know the truth of this matter lies somewhere in the middle. you don't need to convince *me* of anything. i asked for citation so you would back up your posts. without it, it comes across as asserting "opinion as fact".
