  1. Shane Hurlbut tested Panny, Olympus and Voigtlander M4/3 lenses on GH4, and his opinion is that all 3 Voigtlanders are the most cinematic and Pannys came second. He was a little bit disapointed with Olympus ones.

Personnaly I don't have any experience with any of them, but the guy is a working DP so I guess his opinion counts for something.

    More here on his blog:

Thanks for the links. I'm reading them now. I just rented the 42.5 1.2, and plan on seeing how much of a difference the IOS makes. That seems to be the one plus that the Leica has going for it that is hard to get anywhere else.

  2. a 42.5 f1.2 on m43 will not give the same look as a 85 1.2 on full frame, the depth of field equvalent of the 42.5 1.2 is 85mm f2.4. So geting a speedbooster and a 50mm 1.4 (or even 1.2) will give you that shallower depth of field look.

Thank you. That makes sense. It seems like what it comes down to is whether or not the IOS is worth the loss of some depth of field.

  3. GH4 with Speedbooster + Canon Glass,   OR     Leica 42.5 1.2

Im ready to make a purchase to get portrait length lens for my GH4. Currently I have one lens, the Leica 15mm 1.7, and a Nikon f mount adapter (non-speedbooster) Im looking to primarly shoot weddings, and fashion video shoots, so shallow DOF is important to me. Basicly im looking to recreate the look of shooting with a Canon 50-85 mm 1.2L on a 5dMark III... on my GH4.

My dilemma is which route to take. The Leica 42.5 seems like an incredible lense that is excellent in low light, and has an incredible DOF, but purchasing the Metabones Speedbooster opens the door for the future, and allows me to have acess to so many other lenses, both modern and vintage.

I also considered the lesser expensive voltieger 42.5 but the lack of OIS seems huge, especially because I periodically film action sports. The only reason I did not consider going the Nikon Speedbooster route is because It does not include image stabilization.

Help! Im running myself in circles reading review after review.

On a side note, I have found the Leica 42.5 1.2 on eBay new for around $1,200.00 for a "Japan model". Is that to be avoided?

    First impressions review

The long awaited active Canon EF mount Speed Booster adapter for Micro Four Thirds is finally here. I have a review sample, currently putting it through a few shoots to see how it performs. This is not the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera version but the general Micro Four Thirds mount adapter, so fully compatible with all Panasonic and Olympus cameras including the GH4 and E-M1. Finally you can use all your Canon lenses with full electronic support for aperture control and stabilisation.

Andrew, I purchased your book and just wondering when you are planning updating the book for suggested lenses using the Canon EF speedbooster. Thanks!

  5. Do you shoot events or in controlled scenarios?

If you're shooting races and stuff like that... I wouldn't want to use an external recorder for that. Stuff happens very quickly and you're constantly have to push the record button on your camera, push the record button on the external recorder, pause both recordings, somehow sync it up in post. It might work when you shoot the race runs where there's a one or two minute gap between each rider but it's close to impossible when shooting practice in my opinion and experience.

If you shoot in controlled scenarios, as in you shoot a video with one specific rider and you shoot several takes of specific sections of the trail, then an external recorder will work better. In that case a clapper board should do the trick. When you're filming specific sections of a trail that you know, you can also skip the clapper board, hit the record button on your camera, hit the record button on the recorder, position yourself in front of the camera and say for example "section XYZ, take #3" and then sync it in post.

There's a Shure microphone (VP83F) that has an integrated recorder. It's a lot less clumsy than an external recorder plus a shotgun microphone and fairly affordable, so that might work for you.

I see what your saying. In general I'm shooting quick start and stop scenarios. I read extensively about the Shure microphone you mentioned. When they say that "One press of the Record button starts tracking" are they impling that it is "smart", in that it is recording the sound on the external sd card (on the microphone), but starting and stoping based on the camera's start and stop? That is exactly what I'm looking for!

  6. First off, does anyone forsee Panasonic making a firmware update in the future to include audio recording while filming in 96fps on the GH4?

Could I please get a few suggestions as far as the best way to go about recording sound while recording in Slow motion? I find myself often filming in 96fps, giving me flexibility in post to play at full speed, OR slow motion. Im inhibited by the fact that I have no audio, if I choose to speed the footage up. I have reasearched a few external audio recorders but have found little information as far as the workflow to sync the audio to the video. Any help would be much appreciated! Although cost is somewhat a factor, a smooth workflow in order to deliver projects to clients is important.

    Thank You in advance!
