1. I think if Blackmagic became the one company that listened to the customers (unlike Canon), I think they could make a killing in the long run. I like the simplicity of this camera. With a handle, it's be a great run and gun / solo shooter. I'm on the fence between Canon and Sony, and the main thing about Sony is their terrible ergonomics. It's so dated, and with 100 buttons all over the place. The Black Magic is so modern with it's buttons and interfacing. They're thinking like Apple, and I love it.
2. I think this is great for the price. With that said, if it was super 35mm and had some more features such as higher frame rates, crop mode, etc... I would have gladly paid a couple more thousand dollars. Maybe on the next round. I'm just glad they're doing this By the way Andrew, are your tests with the 5D3 with the OLP filter removed coming soon? I'm dying to see the results. If it's positive, I might just get the 5D3 and have it modified. In the USA, Maxmax will do it for about $600, and they've done several 5D3 mods already.
3. I love the interface on this camera. So simple, especially when compared to something like the Sony FS100. I just WISH they would have made a Super 35mm version. If they did that, I would have gladly paid and extra $2 to $3K. For my style, super 16mm is just too cropped. Well, maybe the next gen. I LOVE that they are taking on the big guys.
4. I'm with Chad on that one. I just wanted 1080 Full frame with maybe a crop mode at good res. I'm not too concerned about super high speed, just wanted an reasonably priced Full Frame DSLR that was video friendly. If Canon did that, they would have had my $8K that I have budgeted. I went to the camera store today and checked out the FS-100. I was surprised by how light and hand holdable it was. After DSLRs, I was thinking I was going to hate it, but it's not that bad. Now, I might just get the FS-700 even though it's a couple grand more than I wanted to spend, but Canon just does not deserve my money with their ridiculous offerings. Maybe pick up a cheapo Rebel when the new one comes out as a B-Cam to the FS-700
5. I think the only way to get the last laugh is through hacks such as Magic Lantern. Hey Andrew, since you are friends with both Vitality and Alex, could you suggest that they work together on a Mark 3 hack? I would be the first to pitch in if that happens. I think the 5D3 actually has huge potential, but it's just going to take someone to unlock it. When the GH2 came out, it was pretty ordinary, but Vitality took it to the next level.
6. I find it really perplexing that Canon is obsessed with Hollywood. Apple took the exact opposite direction. As a long time user of the Mac, I find Apple to be very frustrating in that they USED to be a Pro oriented company, and now they've shifted away drastically from the Pro Market. Why? Because the pro market make NO MONEY. It's the low to mid-range users that you make a ton of cash from. Does Arri and RED post huge profits? Hell NO. Because they only cater to the Pros. Which is strange that Canon is going after the Pro market so much because Canon is about 1 thing only, and that's making money. However, the strategy will backfire this time. I think the one thing that can turn the 5D3 around is Magic Lantern and some type of cottage industry to remove the Low Pass filter. I'm still on the fence about getting a 5D3. I'm torn right now between the FS-100 and the 5D3. The Metabones adaptor is hard to get and I have mainly Canon lenses. I'm thinking if Alex can get Magic Lantern working and tweak the codec a bit, along with a Low Pass filter mod, the 5D3 could be a GREAT camera. But that's a lot of IFs. I'm going to wait a few weeks to see how things pan out. Also, ANDREW, can you do an article where you further explore the 5D3 with the Low Pass filter removed? Maybe compare it to an un-altered 5D3.
7. Canon is doing really strange things. The C-500 (at least on paper) is actually a huge BARGAIN compared to the Alexa or Epic. Even if it were $35K, that's super cheap compared to the Epic and Alexa for what you get. The C-500 is to the high end, what the 5D2 was to the lower end It's like Canon is trying to undercut the very high end with an incredible camera that is priced drastically lower than the competition, YET they've completely FORGOT about the low to mid-end range ($3K to $8K) and the customers who bought a million 5D2 and 7D2 from them, who wanted a better camera and were willing to pay around $7k. The higher up's in Canon video are really off target. They should be fired. The 1D-C is going to tank unless it has a huge price drop.
8. I think the reason why Canon users are so upset is because they wanted a video oriented camera that is comparable to the FS-100 (somewhere between $5K to $8k). Even if they just released a better video 5D3 (without 4k), but with basic video features such clean HDMI, a crop mode, flip screen and most importantly, true 1080p, then people would have been happy. If the D800 would have been the 5D3, people would have been much happier. The problem is, selling all my Canon L lenses  and starting from scratch sucks. Our only hope is Alex at Magic Lantern. I will be the first to donate to the 5D3 hacks. I believe a firmware update is going to be available soon, so maybe there is hope.
9. I think it's really hard to make sense of this camera because really.... it just doesn't make any sense. I think if it sold for around $8K, it would be great, but too over priced. And still no flip screen! Is there even peaking or zebra stripes with it?
10. Im at such a loss right now as to what to do? I had about $7K to $8K to spend on a new camera and was hoping it was going to be a Canon. I might go the FS-100 route, but trying to get a Metabones adaptor is really hard right now. They say the wait is about 10 weeks. Sigh........
11. This is a really sad day for Canon users. Sony, here I come. I can't believe they didn't even put a Flip Screen on that thing. And it suppose to be for video?!?! I feel lame for buying all those Canon lenses :( At least there's the metabones adaptor.
12. I know it will be a great camera, but just looking at the picture makes me hope that the Canon 4K EOS will be really good. Why???? Just because I have no desire to go back to the video camera / lunch box ergonomics. Just looks so dated and non-functional. The DSLR format is just so much easier to work with.
13.

I wondering if Panasonic is going release an industry standard 1.5-ish crop? Hate to say this, but if Panasonic sticks with the Micro 4/3rd 2x crop, it will never be used on high profile, marquee type projects no matter how high the resolution. The aesthetic is noticeably different, at least to Pros. Can they make Micro 4/3rd at least a 1.6x crop? Is that even possible?
You could say the same about FF vs 1.5 crop.  Actually the difference between m43 (1.85 crop in video) vs 1.5 crop is small compared to the drop from FF.  Lens selection will have a greater impact.
Depends on who you talk to. GH2 fanboys will say there is very little difference, to many other people, there is definitely a noticeable difference between 1.5x and m43rds in DOF. Plus, a HUGE difference if you are shooting super wide or with fisheye type lenses where a difference of 2 to 3mm is an entirely different composition. For the pro market (many of whom are very particular), Panasonic shot themselves in the foot with M43. But I'm wondering if Panasonic can somehow adjust the crop to make it wider? Or is that impossible.

15. Canon is doing 2 versions of the 5D3, the existing one for photos and the upcoming 4K DSLR. But obviously, there's probably going to be a price difference, but at the core, they are pretty similar cameras with one skewed towards photos and the other towards video.
16. The light wacking does look cool, but even on the shots that don't have lens wacking, it still has a very different look than the GH2 (obviously due to the DOF and colors). I think my point is, resolution is not everything as many GH2 users seem to think. Color rendition and DOF control have a lot to do with an image if not more, and the Canons and the GH2 treat that very differently. They're just very different beasts and I guess for myself, I just prefer a bit less work in post trying to make it look more filmic. I do wish the 5D3 image was sharper, but at the same time, I wish on the GH2 you could achieve a shallower DOF and had a different color rendition. What more important? I guess it's up to the user.
17. I think this video perfectly illustrates what Katon is talking about. PLAN B - Lily Juniper This was shot by James Miller on his new 5D3. Conceptually, it's nothing special. However, the look it gets from the 5D3 is absolutely amazing. For the 5D3 (and even the old 5D2) this is a fairly easy look to achieve. On the GH2, it would be very difficult. You might get within the ballpark, but I am willing to go the distance and say you simply cannot achieve this very organic look on the GH2 without seriously pulling teeth. The 5D3 (and the Canons in generally) just have a different look than the GH2 in that they film people very well and make things just look more sexy. With the GH2, you get a much more realistic look. Of course I wish the 5D3 resolved a bit better, but for my personal choice since I tend to do lots of close ups and people, I would take the Canons over the GH2 in most instances. But once again, that's personal choice. You just have to decide which look suites you and get that camera.
18. After seeing James Miller's really nice footage, I would have to say that the 5D3 probably does resolve higher than 700 lines. His 5D3 stuff looked really nice, but I would like to see a 5D3 un-altered shot next to the altered 5D3 to have final judgment. I completely agree with what people are saying about feeling. Canon has always had the disadvantage of resolution when compared to the GH2, but table is flipped when it comes to aesthetics; that's where the GH2 falls short and probably why it hasn't been more widely adopted. It would be nice to have a bit more res. on the 5D3 though.
19. RIP C-300 and RIP RED. This camera is going to kick the crap out of anything out. RED is in serious trouble because this camera probably will be reliable, unlike the REDs. I think the Canon 4K EOS might still have a chance because it's going to be Full-Frame (hopefully with crop modes) and it will be able to record 4K to Flash Cards. Plus, it will be a good stills camera, so it fills a niche of it's own. From what I understand so far, the Sony will need a recorder for their 4K. Is that correct? Anyways, I think the C-300 will go down in history as the quickest Flash-in-the-Pan. There will be so much buyer remorse that the users are going to have to hire a psychologist. This is great, cause now the 4K EOS will seriously have to up it's game.
20. WOW, that is a noticeable difference in resolution with the filter removed. But it does seem that the focus point is different (In the softer top photo, it seems like focus is more on the roof to the left of the photo as that roof is sharper) so we would have to see a side by side test to get true results. This might spring up a little cottage industry of camera stores that can remove that filter safely, especially if James writes a technical guide of sorts. I think for someone in the know (not myself of course), it's probably pretty easy to do. Can't wait to see some side by side tests. Keep us posted Andrew.
21. 4K definitely has it's place right now. For example, we have a large green screen at work that is just begging for an in-house 4K camera. We don't own a RED so we have to rent, but it would be nice just to have a camera at the studio for us to use anytime. The high resolution is great for green screen re-crops and keying. Aside from that, I would not use the 4K much. Mostly just for VFX type shots or super macros. 4K tends to really clog the post production pipeline. So yeah, 4K for VFX and special circumstances; and 2K for everything else.
22. I bet there is a HUGE rush of people canceling their C-300 Backorders right now  ;D Although, I still feel that the 4K EOS and the 4K Sony are still different markets. The 4K will be full frame and have photographic functions as well, more of a combo cam; while the Sony will be a true video camera. There's a market for both I suppose. But whatever, I'm really happy that Sony is stepping up big time and putting complacent and under performing Canon on their butt.
23.

And we're going to have to wait till September for a response from Panasonic?  Anyone else nervous it's going to be too little too late?
Sony seems to be very aggressive with getting big new advances out.  Since Panasonic's GH and AF series change only once every 2 years, they cannot afford a minor update.
I honestly think that Panasonic CANNOT match Sony or Canon simply because of the 2X crop. Many Pros just won't go that route if they have a 1.5x or full frame alternative, unfortunately for Panasonic. Panasonic's market will just be indie / budget filmmakers because of that, unless they come out with something around the 1.5x crop, but that would require abandoning m43 which they've invested so heavily in. The stigma of the m43 is that it was originally designer for the Consumer market so people can have smaller cameras. Just doesn't jive in the pro world.
24. This is good. Canon just got their A$$ handed to them. For my purpose, I'm still hoping for a Full Frame DSLR hybrid because I like to do Timelapses and would rather just have one hybrid camera, in a smaller DSLR body. So the 4K Canon better be really good. The C-300 is LOST. Canon needs to offer some type of 4:4:4 upgrade to make it even worthwhile. Plus the slow-motion on the Sony is insane. Competition is good, it's Canon's move now and they need to move fast especially after the 5d3 debacle.
25. I wonder if they are going to have some type of Codec increase on the C-300 to make it more enticing? Didn't the Sony F3 originally have an option to unlock 4:4:4 for an extra $3K? Now, I believe that option is included. Seems like the C-300 should be able to easily to do something like that since it's based on Digic 5 (isn't it)? If they do offer something like that, the C-300 would be viable for easily 3 years and have no conflict with the 4K EOS. Philip Bloom says the C-300 is his favorite camera to shoot with and the dude owns like... every camera. So that has to say something about the C-300.
