The Big EOSHD interview: Metabones lens adapters

Metabones recently announced the long-awaited Canon EF mount Speed Booster Ultra for Fuji X, which will be one of the must-have accessories for X-T4 owners. This will have support for phase-detect AF and incorporates Caldwell Optics advanced 5-element ultra-high index tantalum optics. The Caldwell Optics focal reducer remains the best you can get. In this EOSHD Big Interview I caught up with Bo-Ming Tong in Canada, the electronics and autofocus engineer behind Metabones.

Canon 1D X Mark III Review // Filmmaking, video and cinema camera. Get the Fuji X-T4 instead?

I am having problems with the jog wheel on my 1D X Mark III popping every full 360 degree rotation, so there is a mechanical problem there and my body will be returned for a refund and so this is only a short review.

This review also marks a milestone for EOSHD! After 10 years of blog posts, I am going to be doing YouTube now as well! Looking forward to doing MANY a video and growing the channel in a big way. If you’d like to be interviewed, or featured on the channel, do let me know.

So the 1D X Mark III then…

Interview with Stephan Schulz, Leica Camera on the SL2 and filmmaking

Stephan Schulz of Leica Camera - Interview

When I began shooting with my own Leica SL2 earlier this year, I found a lot to like about the high-spec mirrorless camera for filmmaking, and of course the SL2 is superb for photography. However, the battery power management has prevented shooting in 4K and 5K reliably, varying depending on the type of lenses used. After making Leica aware of this issue, Leica’s Head of Product Management, Professional Photo System and co-designer of the SL2 Stephan Schulz has been on my case and I have been on his!

The good news is that Leica are investigating the possibility of a firmware update to alleviate the problem and I will be carrying out testing duties for Leica on the video side going forward.

The Leica SL2 battery grip is on the way from Wetzlar and could offer an instant solution, but this needs to be tested. Here we hear directly from Stephan at Leica Camera AG, in this exclusive interview on EOSHD…

Surely this is the best £20 lens for the Fuji GFX 100

Going beyond full frame with Fuji GFX cameras has many perks. However one of the drawbacks of medium format used to be the amount of money you would have to spend on the lenses – and the size of them, and the slow apertures. With the development of mirrorless medium format cameras with a mechanical focal plane shutter that’s all changed. I had no money left for lenses anyway, after I bought my Fuji GFX 100! So I set myself a challenge. What is the CHEAPEST lens I could use for great images on medium format?

Here I used my Fuji GFX 50R to shoot the photos you see below, but the same look applies to the GFX 100 in 4K as well.

DPReview censors Black Lives Matter photographer and photos of George Floyd protests

George Floyd protesters on Lake Street by the 3rd precinct - Minneapolis

Will Smith said recently that racism isn’t increasing – the difference is that it’s being photographed and filmed – brought out into the open. Now we realise just how much of it there is. If it wasn’t for the filming of George Floyd’s death it may never have come to light. I have not seen many camera websites speak up for George Floyd – but I do know of one which is apparently censoring a forum member’s photos of the protests.

Canon 1D X III / EOS R5 / EOS R6 – Which one will be best for cine?

1d x mark iii renaissance white paper

Canon’s renaissance in video has come at a time when rather than being frozen over, hell has come to planet Earth in the form of 2020. Only a year as perverted and warped as this could bring not one, not two but three Canon hybrid cameras. Which one should you consider adding to your filmmaking life (indeed what’s left of it)?
