Combine the controls of a compact with the guts of a T4i, to make a camera that is too dumbed down for enthusiasts and too expensive for casual snappers or your mum. The best thing I can say is that it is not as bad as I thought it would be. I have absolutely no intention of buying one. There will be a market for it, but not at the price they are asking. A quick skim of the forums suggest the reaction is overwhelmingly negative. Canon's 18MP APS-C sensor was good in 2009 and I think they have made some minor improvements since then, but the latest sensors from Sony absolutely destroy it. [/quote] I think Canon have in stores what they need to drastically improve the video mode and the sensor of their cameras, but they will show it only if their sales go down. But even I'm a little bit disappointed by Canon, people who already shoot on EOS for their projects and are happy with the end result, and/or those that invested massivley in EF lenses will find this product really interesting as a 2nd or 3rd camera, with same picture profile, same video quality (and so same moire and aliasing), and maybe even a Magic Lantern hack in few months... That is really interesting for them to have the same video quality of the main camera but in a really smaller package. That is more than I paid for my GH2 nearly 2 years ago, nearly as much as a high end mirrorless and nearly three times the price of an entry level NEX camera. The basic kit with the usual el cheapo 18-55mm is £769 and that doesn't include the EF adapter. There is no body only deal. US pricing is less in dollars(!), but the major retailers are not stocking it according to Canon, only more specialist stores and places like B&H. [/quote] Yes, it is not a complete disaster. It may even offer the best image quality (for stills) of any camera of its size currently on the market. It would, though, take you 30 seconds of fiddling with the touch screen before you can take any photos. :-) Same size camera with a proper shutter speed dial, jog wheel and 2012 sensor and they have a winner. [/quote] How is it going to offer the best IQ of any camera of it's size when, as you just mentioned above, the Sony Exmor cameras (NEX-5N, NEX-7) absolutely destroy it for IQ, particularly dynamic range and color depth? And the Sony's have the advantage of the excellent E-Mount, where virtually any used lens on Ebay from a $20 Helios 44-2 to a Zeiss Planar will work perfectly on it. I'm a photographer as much as a videographer, and it is strong in both categories. No, it doesn't resolve the same amount of detail as other cameras do, namely the GH2 (which I also own and shoot with), but its a combination of the little things that make me a happy camper. It renders my EF lenses wonderfully, I like Canon's color science (as do my clients), and in my line of work, the ability to flip a dial and bounce between high quality video and high quality photo is worth the price of admission. Like Andrew and others have said before, the 5D3 and GH2 compliment each other well. Both are in my kit and I use each for their practical purposes. I just wanted to point out that not everyone is disappointed with the 5D3. You have one happy Canon user right here. Now I understand that if you were looking to buy the 5D3 for the sole purpose of shooting video, you might be understandably let down. But for many people (including myself) a powerful hybrid photo/video camera is exactly what we wanted. I've followed your conversations on this forum over the past few months and I think you were wise to choose the FS700. There's much more to the EOS M than you think. Just being able to use all my canon EF and EF-S lenses on a body this small, is enough to make me buy it.
