Due to demand Richard Gale has decided to go ahead and put into production his Compact Cine Systems housing for the Sony NEX 5N.

The housing is designed to be used with the NEX 5N, Sony CLM V55 monitor and lens. It is built to order and made in England.

If I had a NEX 5N I would buy this in a heartbeat. Sadly I agree with other posters, the Sony CLM V55 isn't as robust as a SmallHD monitor. Small, compact and easy to use, but the color rendition is not the greatest.

Kudos to Richard for making a great housing! I wish he would make something for the GH2, even though it doesn't need the cooling, it sure could use something for the handling.

You can choose a SmallHD or Zacuto EVF in place of the CLM if you prefer to work that way. The V55 is however a lot cheaper and lighter than something like the DP6. For checking focus, which is the main purpose of it, it's one of the best value DSLR monitors available.

1 sold already. Congrats Sergio, first buyer!

If you let Rich know you want a GH2 housing I am sure he will consider producing it. So keep the requests coming.

The NEX 5N is not a bad camera - sure it doesn't have the same image quality as a GH2 but it isn't far off and it has a larger sensor and 1080/60p. If you want to see a direct comparison for yourself I did one last year between the GH2 and NEX 5N mostly in low light...

Cheers for the feedback guys.

Though the gh2 is more detailed, I think people have a misconception the NEX 5N doesn't produce good enough pictures. I see Canon 7d users with over £1500 worth of big and heavy rig on top of their camera investment, making it into a video cam, and the actual image is not as good as the NEX 5N imo. The 50p/60p full hd is also a really good feature which no other brand offers in this price point. I would like to maybe create a GH3 housing, but i think there may not be enough benefits to it - The GH2 has a good footprint, doesnt overheat and doesnt really need any improvements that aren't already offered at very affordable price points - I imagine the GH3 will be even better. I saw a concept drawing of a machined aluminium case for the GH2 on another forum. It did look good on a visual level. If anything I'd love to get hold of a RX-100 to work with next. I was amazed by Andrews review video. - I recon it would be fine projected on a cinema screen.

I have to say that when Bloomys documentary on Camera Bodies about that collector guy was projected at his Mac Video Expo presenation, IMHO the quality of the image totally blew me away, I was expecting him to say it was his RED, when he said he shot it on the NEX 5N everyone gasped. It was the first time in a long time that I veered to be impressed by what he shot it on as well as what he shot.

RX100 casing would be cool, especially if you came up with some sort of anamorphic solution.

BOOM! :) I'm waiting to see what results Mister Reid yields with his tests. I imagine he will achieve good things.

I think all of us who frequent eoshd thought the same thing: really cool idea but wrong camera.

Andrew, are you aware if there's a Cine Housing in the works for the GH2?

I use this myself for work.
I don't think the GH2 needs a rehousing just a stable professional platform to work from.

I tried them, build my own, designed and redesigned them myself and ended up finding such rigs way too large.
They remove the biggest advantage of a micro4/3...size+weight.
If you use a rig, it should be foldable, lightweight and pulled out of the camera bag and set up within seconds.
Having some more sturdy mounting options then just 1/4" at the bottom, hotshoe at the top and maybe the filter-threads of the lens would allow for more lightweight rigs. Integrate a cage into the body.
(BTW, taking appart and reassembling a GH2 is no magical process. It's just a computer like any other one.)

Examples of where the GH2 has it's unique selling points:
Bringing 3 bodies and 6 lenses to a short-notice or improvised interview shot in a small backpack with enough space for sound, power and light.
Having a body constantly in your pocket with a pancake lens where otherwise you would miss some perfect B-roll or compositing material because your heavy DSLR-body or upper class camcorder is in the hotel room/car/bottom of the backpack/whatever.
Switching bodies instead of lenses and thus be faster and more versatile then a full frame shooter.
Just mounting a body with a wide angle on top of a body with a tele and cut between them in editing because both are so light and small that it's no big deal.

you nailed it in one.

My little housing for the nex 5n is specifically designed to remain handheld in the same way a DSLR can be carried around all day ready to get that money shot no one is prepared for. With the screen folded down, it takes up less space than a popular walk around combo of 5D and 28-70 f2.8L lens so can be packed into a backpack in its entirety during heavy rain. Being a case structure instead of a frame, the ABS structural integrity is similar to aluminium. There is no flex. It is a rigid as if I were to have the case machined in aluminium. However the case, fan system, clm-v55 screen and hand strap adds only a small amount of weight to the overall rig. Id say with a little 50mm prime on the front it weighs in only slightly more than a canon 5d with the same lens. With the Anamorphic lens on there, 4x4 Mattebox, ND's etc it is a little hefty but still manageable for a days work.

That tech noir rig looks lovely, it looks pretty big for taking anywhere other than a film shoot though. You would need a rather large flight case to hold that lot set up and ready to shoot with. I am amazed at the price for it though. Someone has done well to get it priced so reasonably. Seems an awful lot of machined aluminium for the small amount of money! I really like the machining work. I cant find any info about Tech Noir online. Anyone got a web address for them?

The Tecnoir rig is stunningly made and the parts are interchangable with the Red Epic and Scarlett Camera, its all Red Spacings
Tecnoir is a British Company making Pro Cinema Rigs ,
rental houses in London UK are now stocking them for films.
website goes live very soon ..watch this space ...
