As always, be sure to download the 4K version from Vimeo here if you are pixel peeping!

Not a Vimeo Plus member? Download one of my original NX1 4K clips here. This is H.265 converted to ProRes LT.

The NX1 is a 4K camera out of the box but make no mistake, it is really a 6K camera. When the NX1 was being developed in Samsung's lab, the sensor output ran at 6.5K raw at 240fps. Although the feature was only for debugging and not destined for consumers, this should give you an idea of the kind of hardware advances they have made with this camera and the new manufacturing techniques they are employing to get there.

The camera has a CPU with 5 cores (general purpose), 240fps object tracking. 4K video, H.265 and 1080/120fps. Further dedicated hardware cores handle various computational tasks rather than them being done in software.

With this camera Samsung are starting to put their boot into the camera industry in a big way.

And it shows in the images.

Wonderful, I'm turning my gear over early next year, and I appreciate the review for future considerations.

Bottom line, all the new stuff is pretty freaking fantastic.

I'm not too worried about the re-encode process, but thanks for the heads up.  I still do that old-school approach anyway with my 1080 footage so the workflow wouldn't bother me.

The image aesthetic is very promising. Great colours and "feel" to it, very filmic, or at least certainly no body can call it specifically broadcast-like or video-ish.

I'm assuming it's not possible the macroblocking could be caused by transcoding to Prores in Wondershare?

Sorry to keep banging on about this but I really think a quick test of 4K>1080 via the Ninja Star could be very informative.  Macroblocking would almost certainly be improved. If this camera can shoot respectably at 3200 then that would set it firmly apart from the GH4.

I'm still not convinced by the footage I've seen from this camera - still looking overly sharp, very brittle, crushed detail and quite artificial, didn't see this "filmic motion" others have spoke of here.

That said, the features are not too far off ideal for my uses so I'd rather give it a go then set my opinion based on a few quick shots.

I'd still like to see more.... ;)

Oh, just wait a few minutes...

1min, 2min, 3min ... 105min!!!

Thanks for the early footage. Detail looks great! I see what your saying about the sharpness being just right. Can you please do a 1080p 60 and 120p video next time please. Just want to see how the internal 1080p looks like that it too is downsampled from the entire sensor. is it any special compared to the BMPocket/A7s/C100/C300. Thanks!

Awesome Review!

This is a tough one for me, I am looking at buying a new camera in the next few weeks. Its going to be hard to decide between NX1, GH4 or the A7S. Hopefully some more test footage will come up in the next few weeks on the NX1 to maybe help make this easier.

As Andrew pointed out, the NX1 uses a new CODEC, which is a pain even for people who work in this stuff all the time.  If you want low light, the A7S is your camera.  If you ergonomics and features for movies, and haven't used a Panasonic before, then the GH4 will NOT let you down.  I'd only get the NX1 if you had money to burn and you just wanted to have fun on the bleeding edge.  As nice as the footage is, RAW delivers better organic dynamic range, IMHO.  If any camera keeps looking like a steal it's the LX100!  At least on the web, it looks as good as anything out there.

Good nice early review.  Although I'm sure you'll discover a few more things in the next few weeks.  Keep us updated on anything you find.  Have you done any tests with the 1080p modes? particularly the high frame rate options?

Yeah, the slow-mo at 120fps 1080p is pretty good actually, I'll need to try it more to see exactly how good.

The menu options in the manual seem to only show 1080p up to 60fps.  How did you get 120fps?  Is that the 1/4 speed in the slow motion menu options?  This is great news if this really is 1080p @ 120fps and not some interpolated frame garbage some early slow mo cameras had.  I too would love to see more samples of slow motion 1080p if you have a chance.

Also, I think the NX1 video footage posted so far looks outstanding and I don't think we've even seen the best this camera has to offer.  By re-encoding from H.265 to H.264 for editing and playback online, it undoubtedly resulted in some loss of detail and quality.  Once we have native H.265 editing and playback, there won't be anything that can touch the NX1 video quality under $10K.
