Just thought I'd drop my 2cents.. I owned a Nikon d5200 last year for about 6 months before replacing it with a gx7. In April I tested the a6000 against my gx7 and found the a6000 to have no advantages. I became so confident about the Panasonic system that after 7 months of using the gx7 I upgraded to a gh3 (for the higher bitrates, better grip and more spaced out controls). I can't speak for the g6 but I doubt the image quality is much different to the gh3/gx7.

Just to expand on a few things...

 

I had a very hard time leaving my Nikon because the photo quality was just so damn good. The video quality was good too but I always felt it lacked a little something. But there were other problems, like the small viewfinder made it hard to manually focus for stills, especially at night. Changing WB for video was cumbersome. And the lack of dual control dials was a hindrance too.But mainly, there was no cheap and small 35mm focal length equivalent lens (a personal preference).

 

The a6000 felt nice in the hand and had a great electronic viewfinder. However, like previous NEX's it showed a lot of noise in low light, making it very difficult to manually focus. I did a little stills test and the latitude and noise levels between it and my gx7 were very similar, with the GX7 gaining a lead at high ISO's. The video quality was no less disappointing, with the Sony showing more moire/aliasing, less detail and less dynamic range.

I have taken a very different view of the Nikon D5200.

 

I almost sold mine and now I am very glad that I didn't. I bought the GM1 in May and left the 5200 on the shelf until I needed some high quality stills last week.

 

I started to play with the video on the 5200 again and was surprised how organic it looked. The colours straight out of the camera are excellent too, requiring less colour correction.

 

 

I find the Panny too clinical, which requires work in post to give it character.

 

Strengths of the D5200 over the GM1:

  • It takes awesome stills
  • With the 40 Mb/s hack, it takes great video up to high ISO's (Excellent up to 1600, I need to test beyond)
  • The live view magnification makes manual focus a breeze
  • Bigger so much easier to get steady shots than the GM1 (I always use a monopod for video on the GM1)
  • No battling with the 2x crop factor of the Panny
  • Swivel screen. I struggle with the fixed GM1 screen in bright light
  • The video button is much easier to use than the one on the GM1
  • Easier to get shallow depth of field

 

The 5200 is definitely a keeper. So is the GM1, but I am thinking about building my lens system around Nikon lenses now so that they can be used on both, but with bias to the D5200.

 

I have a Contax 50mm 1.7 which is fabulous on the GM1 (creates less of a clinical look). I can't wait to try it on the 5200.

if you want a one stop shop for a great Nikon lens get the 28-70mm AF ED f2.8

As used on Bourne Ultimatum , Green Zone, Captain Phillips Casino Royale -

amazing lens - I cannot say enough good things about this lens ....it replaces all those Nikon primes this one killer lens

 

the images just 'pop' off the screen with this lens as is - no speedbooster

then if you add a speedbooster it gets even better ..if that is possible , brighter faster wider and even sharper!

I have that lens but I dont like to use it because its gigantic. Maybe on a rig, but handheld. But it looks very good as you said.
The only problem with it is that the focus will break sooner or later, but if you only want it for video this makes a nice way to get it cheap.

If you want a 35mm equivalent you could get the 24 f2 ais, or get the sigma 18-35 f1.8 (but this one is without aperture ring)

Thanks, Andy. I have been thinking about that lens. I followed your advice about the Contax 50mm 1.7, which has worked out really well.

 

The 28-70mm AF ED f2.8 is huge, which is putting me off a bit, though it would be impressive with clients.

I didn't want to divert this thread away from the OP's initial question about camera choice, but I do recommend that he adds a used Nikon D5200 into his list.

 

A 1.5 crop factor is much easier to deal with than the Panny's 2x. (Edited the crop factor, which was a typo)

 

The D5200 video (with the hack) is just as good, with a bit more character IMO. Also it will be interesting to see what other hacks are developed now that the Nikon Hacker team are gaining a better understanding of the Nikon firmware.

The crop factor is 1.5x on the nikon aps-c cameras. No I'm not selling it :P, It's my only zoom lens and I only got it back last month.

 

If you want cheap nikkor glass hurry up because nikon might drop the bomb at the end of the month and you can only use f mount glass on the nikons.

Yep, sorry. I entered the wrong value for the Nikon crop factor.

 

What do you mean about Nikon possibly "dropping the bomb at the end of the month"? Do you believe that Nikon are about to go bust?

It's a new fullframe camera rumor, articulated screen -> video. Maybe it does 4K and for a decent price without funky colors or external recorders and without noise (24MP 2x oversampled to 4K).

 

But that would be too nice from nikon.

With nikon G lenses you can't change the aperture while in live view, that's correct. But Nikon G lenses are expensive, nikon ai-s lenses are cheap and nice, perfect for video.

 

24 2.8,28 2,35 2,50 1.4,85 2,105 2.5,135 2.8. Get them all.

The brilliant thing about all of these (though not sure about the 28 f2*) is that they all have a 52mm filter thread. 

 

I have most of these and the only thing I can add is that I chose the 35mm f2 AF-D rather than AIs version because the optics are a apparently a great improvement. The build and focus action is not quite as lovely as AIs lenses, but it's fine (nowhere near as bad as cheap G lenses). Oh and I chose the 50mm 1.8 after much research, I think it's a little sharper. I'd also add the 200mm f4 to the list if you want a long lens (longest small, quality 52mm AI's lens).

 

* btw the 28 f2.8 is the one with a stellar reputation

I have the 28 1.4 so I haven't tried out the others but the 28 2 is also nice from what I've seen on the internet.

The prospect of a Nikon FF like that would prevent me buying any DX lenses such as the brilliant Sigma 18-35.

 

It's a rumor, and that 4K stuff comes out of my imagination so... Wait till september ;)
