4K timeline

When editing 4K for 1080 output in FCPX should the timeline be 4K or 1080?

 

It would seem to me that to take full advantages of 4K, i.e. pan/zoom etc. that one should use a 4K timeline and convert to 1080 on export via Compressor?

 

I am new to 4K and would be interested in any articles written about the nuances of working with it.

I found it a bit confusing myself, but here are some answers to a similar question posted in the forums:

This guy also recommends just dropping the 4K file into the 1080p timeline.
