I read with great interest your article "Discovery: 4K 8bit 4:2:0 on the Panasonic GH4 converts to 1080p 10bit 4:4:4", but I am new to the technical details there. I have a GH4 that I am trying to use for serious filmmaking and would like to know more about this topic. Especially this question and answer near the end of the above article:

"Will it require specialised software to do the transcoding and downsampling?  or can existing methods be used?

As long as you upconvert to RGB and 10/16-bit first, you get the benefits. A 16-bit comp can demonstrate this to be all true."

Just what steps should I take in, say AE CS6, to accomplish this upconversion and 16-bit comp?

Or, what other things do I need to do to get 10-bit 4:4:4?

I'm a real newbie and don't know my way around the block yet.

So far, I have simply been dropping my 4K footage on a 1080p timeline in Premiere CS6 and getting nice results, but would like more latitude for grading, etc.

Thanks much

Joe

What are peoples opinion on GH3 vs GH4. I feel GH4 possibly looks more like video when compared to GH3. I feel the extra sharpness of the GH4 is really something that imo doesn't look right. I would have much preferred they would have simply worked on improved iso and dynamic range.

Can anyway please help me with some nice neutral settings? Everything I've tried on the GH4 looks too sharp or just lifeless + too much yellow in skin tones and then too much magenta. I'm finding it almost impossible to get the actual color I want out of the GH4

Are you using Cine D and 180°? Are you grading?

Has any consensus been reached on using the BMCC (not the BMPCC) Speed Booster (Nikon mount in my case) with the GH4?

Does anyone here use that combo?

Can it really damage the camera?

Hi,

I just received a GH4 and something bugs me with the EVF:

When I set video setting to 4K, the refresh rate of the EVF drops to maybe 15 fps, and that is a problem for panning with fast moving subjects.

It seems I get this behaviour even in relatively bright conditions. I tried to set the EVF rate to 60 fps in the custom menu, with no result.

What suprises me is that with the same setting, the rear screen view remains fluid, so I cannot understand why the EVF nedds a slow refresh rate.

Is that a normal behaviour ? Didi I miss something in the settings ?

Any help greatly appreciated ;o)

What's your shutter speed?

I get the same EVF refresh rate drop, whatever the SS (from 1/50 to 1/1000), but only in 4K...

edit : in fact I also get the drop in 2K, at 1/20s or below, which I can understand.

The question then is why when in 4K, the refresh rate is not fast with high SS.

Thanks. If you mean the "Constant preview" setting, I turned it off already... Is there another setting to turn on/off ?

It would be helpfull if any GH4 owner could confirm that they have no EVF frame rate drop in 4K. On mine it is very easy to see when panning quickly.

After doing a little more research, I have discovered that the issue that you see is not because of C4K or UHD, but it is becasue the unit at 24p. No matter if you are in C4K/UHD or 1080p the refresh rate is lower at 24p as opposed to 30 and 60hz. I must admit I have not spent much time with my camera out of 24p creative movie mode  :), so I really never paid much attention to the refresh rate of the monitor/EVF as it was fine.

My unit behaves as follows.
24Hz: slow EVF and monitor in all mov. settings
50Hz: slow EVF and monitor only in 4 K settings
59.94Hz: slow EVF and monitor in 4K settings. The 24fps 4K setting seems the worst.
For all settings EVF seems wors than monitor.
It never bothered me too much and I hope this post won't change that ;)

After reading this whole thread and a good few reviews on this camera, I ordered one this weekend as a replacement for my 7D. Even more of a bargain with Panasonic's £200 cashback, I've paid £900 for the camera! Can't wait to start using it and seeing what it can do.
