Richard is updating his lenses from the "Apogee " series.(Dog Schidt Optiks)

We're currently working on our new CLAVIUS lenses (available March 2018) which is a significant upgrade to our previous APOGEE series.  An outline of the changes is as follows:-

Extra rugged construction

Internal focus

Reduced breathing, no extension during focusing, improved dust sealing, smoother focus action

Geared aperture ring

Relocated focus ring for extra camera body clearance

Larger witness marks for easier focus pulling

Same vintage optics

Wow, that would have been a nice payday... albeit a 30 year old investment.

When I was a youth, we all started off using our Dad's Zenith Es or Praktica MTL3s (they loved those eastern bloc cameras!) then when it was time to get our own everyone went Japanese and the Pentax ME Super was hugely popular at the time. Looking on eBay, I think that might be the best route in to hoover up some bargains as there are loads of them for sale that include a couple of lenses into the bargain.

If your GF begins to worry about the lens collection growing, I always find its a good idea to have this photograph to hand for perspective on just how restrained you're actually being.

Yeah, when I bought my first DSLR for video, I couldn’t afford any native lenses, so I bought vintage ones and adapters. The first few I bought were Series E lenses but the first fuller set I had were Pentax Ms, and they were awesome. But then I got bit with the lens buying bug. But you’re probably right, some K version or M lenses are probably the most cost effective way to a decent set of vintage primes. Hell even the 50mm 1.2 is considerably less than the Nikkor... which is already considerably less than a fast Zeiss.

Sadly, I probably have nearly one shelf’s worth of lenses the guy has in that photo.

I'm in the queue for one.

I was seriously considering a GH5 and then the GH5s threw a spanner in the works and had me going round in circles about choosing between them.

The unexpectedly low price of the P2 means that by the time it comes out I can probably get that and a used GH5 for roughly the price of the GH5s on its own.

Canon could release that camera you want tomorrow but you know they won't!

The real dark horses for me in the next few years could be Sigma as they've filed a patent for what would amount to a Foveon sensor for video.

That would be something genuinely different and they have their own lens lineup (as well as expertise in everyone else's AF) to marry it to.

I’ve been wondering when Sigma would start taking video seriously. I’ve read that the Foveon sensor has some limitations in that regard but with the popularity of their lenses for video, it would seem to be a perfect fit for them.

The great thing about the P2 is the price. If you’re even remotely interested in video, you just cannot beat the specs at that price, and this will reflect in the bigger manufacturers numbers.

I agree Canon won’t do it, but I also never thought they’d release the C200. And even with that camera’s flaws, 4K Raw in a cinema camera with DPAF, and every other luxury a cinema camera affords is pretty amazing from Canon. Obviously, I don’t know for sure but I would imagine the Ursa’s effect on the market, could have motivated them. Now how the P2 effects the market is to be seen, but I think we will see some great video specs coming from all of the companies in the next couple of years thanks to the release of the P2... it should be some interesting times ahead.

I think its been largely a question of processing grunt but that variable is always heading in their favour so I suppose its a question of when the two collide.

Might well be a long way off yet but they've got the building blocks.

Nathan Gabriel asked in topic about BMPCC 4k - but I think that promised samples better fit here...

@Nathan Gabriel Do you know how the quality of the SLR Magic 10mm compares to their 17mm? I have the SLR Magic 17 and it's nice, but it doesn't come close to the quality of my voigtlander.

@anonim Later I could extract some snapshots from last clips shot with 10mm...

I hope that these grabed-stills could give you at least some idea about SLR Magic 10mm - yet unprepared material, almost straight OOC with some skin corrections for this occasion, taken with Atomos proreshq, so obviously lesser sharpening than internal codec... I'm shooting one short about triathlon champion (and painter also), so sorry for maybe boring content from one session of running in the nature, I choose SLRM10 for it...

We are currently shooting a piece for my city's marketing company. It's all about inclusion and social diversity.

This shot is from a boxing training session for people with Parkinson's disease. A very humbling experience.

Shot with the Canon FDn 35-70 f/3.5-4.5 and a chinese focal reducer. I recently bought it for under 20$, while searching for the one with a constant f/4 aperture. The only gripe I have with it is that the front element and the filter threads retracts into the front barrel, and I do not have a 52mm ND-filter :(

Nice... Everybody says that lens is a dog, but you’ve proven that theory wrong. I have the f/4 and the barrel is the same way... I don’t even think you can use an ND filter with it. Great lens though. What camera did you shoot this with?

Cokin do a little adapter to use their A series filters with compact cameras that might be come in useful for you for this problem.

It attaches to the tripod mount of the camera and has various lanes you can put it in to move it front and back. I suspect it might not be long enough to put the filter far enough forward with those lenses but its trivial to extend it out with a piece of aluminium etc.

A Series filters cover equivalent of up to 67mm filter thread so will be fine for anything up to there and the holder takes 3 of them.

Obviously, once you have Cokin A series filters you get access not only to their workman stuff like NDs and grads etc but also to their classic 70s and 80s soft porn toolkits !

Maybe I could use those to soften up the 100% phony expressions. ?

Wow that HDR one is sharp as a tack an crazy good colors wise. I can't imagine what it looks like on a True 4k HDR TV or Monitor.

That Filter Holder is surprisingly cheap.

I decided to try out the Fujinon-TV 25mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.4. They need to be modified, but I shot some rough test footage to see how they look/compare to other c-mount lenses.

The Fujis are very nice, but I'm not sure they're really all that different or better than the Cosmicar and Canon lenses. Not really sure if I'll bother modding them. At least they were dirt cheap.

Just a brief observation.

Someone who's been a member of EOSHD for some three years now recently posted some remarks in the lenses thread for the very first time. With the express purpose of ridiculing the subject of one of my videos.

The subject of the video is not a professional model - she's a student - and we were just having fun. She's a twenty year-old behaving like many young people here do. I was mostly interested in capturing the lighting in the cafe - a beautiful dappled light at around three in the afternoon that I found quite intriguing. I also wanted to try out the 180 degree rule, since I've never shot a dialogue scene before: granted, there's no audio, and I only shot one person.

Regulars here are also aware that most of my shots are pretty static, so I was trying out some handheld to see how that worked out. My assistant helped out with reflectors and a hair light for some of the shots, and my goal was to make the lighting look as natural as possible. And of course, I wanted to see how the Olympus 45mm f/1.2 handled all this.

Now, if this criticism had come from someone whose work was beyond reproach, that would be one thing. But much of this person's body of work shows a profound lack of understanding of composition and displays an utter disregard for the fundamentals of good lighting; his content is deadly dull; and his work has not progressed in any meaningful way as long as I've been following his channel on YouTube. He doesn't offer any constructive criticism whatsoever or even seem to realize that the purpose of the video was to give others an idea of how the lens performs. This person is not a filmmaker - he's a technician. In fact, although he shoots with a nice camera, all of his work screams video.

You can feast your eyes on his videos here.
