Apple is Coming For Y'all: Disruptive Video Production Technologies

So much wrong with this. First of all, "this" IS happening. We are all witnessing a major shift on social media platforms from photography to video. Why? Simple: storytelling.

Second, "waiting for the right technology" is missing the point. Human beings will mess around with things to create (See: 2001: A Space Odyssey). Apple is putting these filmmaking tools that nobody asked for into their iPhones and people WILL start using them.

...to make TikTok videos.

And you're mistaken about the democratization of filmmaking tech. First of all, traditional filmmaking is far, far still prohibitive for most people. You're still spending thousands - at least tens of thousands of dollars to make even a watchable short film. And by you, I mean you, trust fund kid who wants to make movies but have shit stories that doesn't resonate with any normal people.

This is still going to be true when everyone has an iPhone with fake rack focusing on it. You'll still need to spend time and money to stand out. You're still going to need a crew if you want a certain standard of lighting and sound, especially one worthy of Apple TV. The competitive advantage of having a budget is arguably going to be even more important for traditional filmmaking if smart phone camera advancements lead to a flood of people producing content with a higher apparent baseline of quality.

And it's not just about the camera. It's about technologies (both hard and soft) that will reduce the need for gear and crew and any other prohibitive costs that have otherwise prevented billions of people on this planet from making their own movies, telling their own stories. Not cat videos, TikTok clips, or dick pics. But stories. That hasn't happened yet. But it will.

The obvious trajectory of this evolution is for ONE PERSON to tell a STORY, as we have always done for thousands of years. Except this time, millions will be gathered around the fire to hear the best ones.

At the end of the day I don't see this technological shift as being so seismic as to so dramatically alter the course of society as you envision. In general, but especially among the younger generations, people are consuming less film content. They watch more TikTok, short clips, Twitch streams. Video is everywhere but 'fIlm' in the traditional sense is becoming less central to the culture. If the incredible advancements in affordable video technology we've already seen have lead us to the centrality of TikTok, then to me that's a sign that people just aren't itching to make 'films'.

A few people will create videos in a new genre with this...perhaps, but the vast majority of the billion or more phones being sold will be used to make cheesy rack focus tiktok memes.

Personally, the trend towards short social media content is disturbing. Spend 5 days straight swiping through instagram reels or tiktok and then step back. You will be less patient, dull, and be addicted to instant gratification.

Shits toxic.

Also, capturing huge ProRes with a tiny tiny sensor is hilarious.

Not really sure why so much hate towards smaller sensors....

Also very amused by the respect for Prores in this thread and the complete lack of it in my external recorder thread.

Bizarre.

  • 2 weeks later...

Almost pulled the pin on the iphone 13 pro yesterday, except for the fact, they only had 1 in  256gigs. I figure i'll need the 1 t iteration to give myself some space as unlike android they dont have a card slot. Which seems kinda limiting to me.

Not had an apple before. Since i'm away for three weeks after next week and i doubt that i'll find a 1t version before that , i figure i'll let the dust settle abit, by the time i get back everything should a bit clearer and i'll either have saved some money by not getting it or i'll lash out on one.

For what?

Hi independent, etal,

My answer is, "why not?" Methinks the diverse masses and their diverse creative needs and desires are best served with the availability of top-notch creative tools, so I say "bravo!" on Apple and any other manufacturers who continue to provide the latest in technology to their customers.

Case in point...My sweetie recently decided to try the slow-motion video capabilities of her iPhone after viewing some of the clips I was sending along to her and my daughter from mine, bravo that she had a quickly-available tool in her pocket to do so! Now I am the happy recipient of some slow motion butterfly and hummingbird clips she managed to espy on her day! Maybe, after checking out the dynamic range of ProRes she might also decide to embrace shooting with that format just as she moved from shooting JPGs to shooting RAWs with her Lumix G9! "Hooray!" I say, that I will soon have a pocket camera that can finally match the color fidelity, resolution and, most notably, dynamic range of my old Canon 1014XL-S loaded with a Kodachrome 40 Super 8 cartridge!

Ha, that only took 41-years!

Tens of thousands of people were completely content to watch Porn Movies when I was young shot on 8mm, super 8mm film cameras. They ignored the horrendous handheld jitters, terrible low light ability, and just crap film skills for what, Content, and Content is king. The camera, be it an iPhone or an Arri is the least of your problems.

Still, i just won an auction for a tasty bmmcc with a oplf/ir-cut filter, cage, npf battery adapter and hdmi support. Guess it will be raw camera porn, which means me lookin at this beauty rather than having the camera look at @webrunner5
The people from slashcam already tested prores via filmic app. It still has all the sharpening and processing, a bit more resolution due to using a hair more of the sensor. So the same image like the ifon12.

Celluloid was much more forgiving with camera shake.

Digital technologies look awful with jitters and make people sick more rapidly. The brain knows it's unnatural.

Content is king, but 99.9% of the time I'd watch a shaky old family film than a shaky iPhone family video in 2021.

As every tool in filmmaking, content, production values and the shooter to know how to raise the craft with the available tools still count ; )

Reason why fancy computational photography will bring more stuff like this or that (mute it!)

when explored within its limits such as here or there...

or yet contained  in this article on their 'cinematic mode' but not to necessarily fit every single case for sure : X

besides it is more prone to fail than the reverse.

Side by side as 'the' new cinematic game changer camera -- herein, the official Whodunnit beyond the Kathryn Bigelow's Hollywood In Your Pocket (BTS here) or/and some other unofficial fragile attempts, when not backed by the brand nor talented craftspeople using the tools as audience standards blatantly stand.

Here's why this replaces next to nothing. There's always how to tune it more accordingly in any way whatsoever.

To my liking, the lack of 4K 120fps nowadays is a deal breaker -- my OnePlus 9 Pro adds it to the cinematic mode aka portrait mode or still the option to lock the exposure too!

That said, main camera's low light top performance already seen from that Taipei sample, coupled to 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes in this Toronto footage, I guess, or the Big Apple, among many others for sure, clearly put it at a higher bar even though not at the (pristine) ZV-E10 level, no doubt that both are the typical no-brainer.

The iPhone actually holds up fairly well, despite what this Youtuber is saying. It still misses a 35mm lens though.,

Two majors AFAIK: 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes coupled to that incredible main camera versus the leftover where a tiny sensor size definitely will never help and that ZV-E10 is such a fine example.

A bulky device with software that belongs to the 90's versus a phone with 1TB of memory that fits in one hand and doesn't attract much attention if any. I get it, its sensor is tiny. It's not for professional video use. But neither is the a7s3 (imho).

I'd say light (= time) and variable dimension texture (= space) where DOF game enters, they are for professional use, well, anything you're able to make a living from is for that intended use ; ) And yes, nonintrusive capture devices are 'the' one camera you have in hands possible to give you that shot you're looking for and no other produces :- )

"Hi there, we will be sending the new iPhone next week to our loyal Youtube content creators for purposes of comparison. We would highly appreciate a Youtube comparison between our Sony Alpha 7S III next to the device we will be sending you. Perhaps some low-light comparisons in a dark backyard at night could really do our device justice. Thank you, Sony"
