Sony Xperia 1 II smartphone - 4K60p H265 "powered by CineAlta"

The specs are there, but until a reputable reviewer makes some sample studio scene shots, there is still a lot unknown. Sony smartphones have been famously producing not-flagship-level photo IQ.

As for 20 fps - most flagships have reliable DPAF in video, which is 30-60 fps. Not much an achievement, until you factor in the big 12mp sensor that has shallower DOF. Which brings us to the S20 Ultra with the same size sensor that has been plagued by AF issues. So again, a review is needed. And then the question is, how many times are you doing 20fps bursts with 24mm lenses (don't know if other two modules support this mode).

The S20 Ultra actually has a bigger sensor (1/1.33 instead of 1/1.7), but seems like a failure.  The 960 fps on the S20 ultra is even upscaled 480 fps...

The S20/S20+ has the same sensor size as the new Sony.

Considering that Sony is the leader in sensor development, it's a mystery why they couldn't just produce a 12MP 1/1.3" sensor, that does better low light, has higher dynamic range, faster readout, and better frame rate options. Plus great HDR in photo and video (Sony really needs to fix its HDR algorithms).

I believe the main problem with a larger sensor is fitting the lens. The S20 Ultra is 8.8 mm thick which is considerably larger than the competition. Making the phone thicker will turn away quite a few consumers.

The lens thickness is also the main reason why most tele-cameras on smartphones are so bad. They often just use a smaller sensor but with a similar focal length as the main camera. For marketing it seems better to have 3 cameras even if cropping the main camera will give similar results. The S20 Ultra is one of the few exceptions that use a periscope lens, which in theory could be an improvement.

S20/S20+ main 12MP camera is actually the same sensor as Xperia 1 II, IMX555

Most likely too few PDAF pixels. That's why Samsung introduced the dual pixel 50MP 1/1.3" GV1 sensor.

Unfortunately not true for us Europeans :( The Exynos version uses a Samsung produced image sensor: https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-Exynos-Galaxy-S20-and-S20-don-t-use-the-same-main-camera-sensor-as-the-Snapdragon-models.455406.0.html

I would imagine this to be an advantage to the Xperia 1 II for anyone living in an Exynos region of the world for Samsung. The Snapdragon processor is clearly better than the Exynos processor and the image sensor is probably better too. As far as I know, Sony uses the same hardware world wide.

Agreed, their 1 Mark II name is pretty nonsense, unless they plan to strongly bet on different series of same kind. Actually, they have it but their smartphones lineup is weak.

What surprises me is how they are delivering great consumer tools for pro usage. A very good surprise indeed.

The newly announced Xperia 5 Mk II looks like an even better phone - 4K120p with HDR (Xperia 1 is getting that with and update) and a smaller, more manageable screen size and same size battery (cameras are the same as with Xperia 1):

IMHO the problem is that Sony isn't using specialised image sensors for this, and trying to expect cinema quality video from it. They should have used 1/1.33 sensors with a 12MP sensor count on this, and much better HDR algorithms. All the sensors should have been the same or similar sized, to ensure similar dynamic range and processing. So much great software limited by the hardware.

They should have aimed to beat the iPhone 11 at dynamic range and image quality, and by a noticeable margin. This doesn't beat that, or come close.

Even something for 300/400 bucks coupled to free camera2API do the trick much better...

I think only 4K120fps can be the news up there...

Let's wait and see, Sony doesn't convince me for years except with their sensors when used by others. Sad but rather true because they only focus on their high-end, to my view, even worse than others (Cannot ; )
