Above: the current FS100 (pictured) will get a 4K companion at NAB

At NAB 2012 next month, Sony will shake the digital cinema market to its core. Sony’s answer to the C300 is a 4K Super 35mm update to the FS100. It will be available in June for a provisional $8000.

Now we're talking!  Awesome for Sony.  I read that Canon was going to reduce their C300 in the near future.  It makes sense why now (could still be bs)!  We'll see what transpires now with Sony.  Whoever takes the market lead and gives a worthy product (this is 2012 and people aren't stupid and the world economies are struggling - money is tight and news spreads quickly).  Companies need to offer consumers value.  I'm in the market for a worthy camera.  This may be it.
The resultant FS100 markdowns may make that camera worth considering for many. I still can't find a used one for that much less than a new one with rebate.

This is a big point... Not only does the FS700 spell trouble for Canon at the $16,000 mark, it will spell trouble at the $3500 mark as well. The 5D Mark III was not enough to compete with the FS100 at that level, and now the results are about to bite.

My FS100 was $4200 on eBay.

I can see it coming down to $3500 - not too much lower since it is still a fantastic camera and there isn't much else like it around at the moment.

Who else thinks Canons seem be completely shackled by corporate immobility at the moment?? GET ON WITH IT

Canon had their chance with the 5D3 (unless they have a firmware unlock to a host of goodies).  Instead they thought they could offer a few upgrades (which were wanted a couple years back!).  Money is tight.  People want value.  If a company doesn't take the bull by the horns and lead then they become the follower.  Once people decide on a camera with a competitor it is lost business and to gain the customer back may never happen.  Simple business.  In this day and age with the internet, news moves quickly.  You got to stay ahead.  Why accept mediocrity?
People tried the MD3 then tried to justify in their minds how to achieve a better picture...sharpen, etc. Why should the consumer be trying to achieve in their minds the satisfaction through their ingeniuity.  Something wrong with that PICTURE.  I bit my tongue but I can't any longer.  I'm hoping Canon steps up to the plate and puts their best hitter to bat.  Sony is leading the charge!

This is good. Canon just got their A$$ handed to them.

For my purpose, I'm still hoping for a Full Frame DSLR hybrid because I like to do Timelapses and would rather just have one hybrid camera, in a smaller DSLR body.

So the 4K Canon better be really good.

The C-300 is LOST. Canon needs to offer some type of 4:4:4 upgrade to make it even worthwhile.

Plus the slow-motion on the Sony is insane. Competition is good, it's Canon's move now and they need to move fast especially after the 5d3 debacle.

And we're going to have to wait till September for a response from Panasonic?  Anyone else nervous it's going to be too little too late?
Sony seems to be very aggressive with getting big new advances out.  Since Panasonic's GH and AF series change only once every 2 years, they cannot afford a minor update.

News is spreading:
This is another guys post about talking about the merits of 4K.  Sony will have a huge winner here.

The point is 1080p and REAL 1080p

Both 1080p, C300 with 4 K Sensor.See the difference ? ^^

I honestly think that Panasonic CANNOT match Sony or Canon simply because of the 2X crop. Many Pros just won't go that route if they have a 1.5x or full frame alternative, unfortunately for Panasonic. Panasonic's market will just be indie / budget filmmakers because of that, unless they come out with something around the 1.5x crop, but that would require abandoning m43 which they've invested so heavily in.

The stigma of the m43 is that it was originally designer for the Consumer market so people can have smaller cameras. Just doesn't jive in the pro world.

Also,
JVC coming out with their $5000 4K video camera.  Later this year, they were to introduce their interchangeable 4k video camera.  Sony is beating them to the punch.  Sony is giving the competition a knockout punch.  Canon better wake up very quickly.  JVC better move quicker with their interchangeable 4k.  Panasonic better move quickly.

Canon's big Hollywood Debut looks like it will be short lived.  Was it arrogance due to the 5d2 success?  SONY! Sony! Sony!  Right on.

I bet there is a HUGE rush of people canceling their C-300 Backorders right now  ;D

Although, I still feel that the 4K EOS and the 4K Sony are still different markets. The 4K will be full frame and have photographic functions as well, more of a combo cam; while the Sony will be a true video camera.

There's a market for both I suppose. But whatever, I'm really happy that Sony is stepping up big time and putting complacent and under performing Canon on their butt.

GH3 in September probably, but that is not a response to an $8000 camera is it?

Panasonic's response, if there is one, will also be at NAB. I'm expecting an update to the AF100 or a higher end version to compete with the C300 and FS700.

Have my doubts about those chart shots, which I saw earlier. Those links seem broken can you repost? Who says the FS700 won't do 'real' 1080p as well? Is that chart really representative? Why is the white so much brighter in the C300 shot?

"the FS700 does 4K via 3G HD-SDI to an external recorder."

My Red One does 4K and doesn't need an external recorder.

Totally different price range.

Those charts were from a post from some guy on dvxuser.net.  If I'm on the forum and can find the links, I'll post.

The post was positive towards the FS700 saying it will have true 1080p.  On the other hand, the FS100 isn't true 1080p.
