Sure it is cheaper for a reason isn't it. It is older than the G85. It has older tech and no IBIS. I would Hope it is cheaper. Hell a Canon 5D mk II is Half the price of a Canon 5D mk III. So you should buy the mk II and be happy. I don't think so unless you are stone cold broke.

Saving more doesn't mean you Ought to buy it for that reason alone. It is not like the G7 is some really special camera like say a Canon C100 is. Sure it is a cheap way to get 4K but there is more to doing that than just the cheapest way to do it.

Hell recommend a Olympus EPL1. The only cost 50 bucks. 720p and all. Even has 2 axis IBIS! That makes the G7 seems super expensive to me. A 10 year old can afford it. Get a head start on other kids. Buying the cheapest ass thing sometimes bites you in the ass. No IBIS means you are pretty much stuck on a Tripod, or Monopod unless you want to look like you have Parkinson's Disease.

With a camera strap it’s easy to get stable shots. People act like IBIS is the be all or end all lol

I bought my g7 like 3 years ago for ~$500 and still use it a bunch as an additional angle or wide camera. It's truly been an amazing value for me and continues to be an asset.

It is not 'crap' today, it wasn't crap yesterday, it won't be crap tomorrow.

It's a great camera that has always been a huge value for the money spent, now it only continues to do so, especially used where it can be had so damn cheap.

Is the g85 crap? no

Is the g85 a good value? yes

Is the g7 crap? no

Is the g7 a good value? yes

What's the problem here??

Bullshit. All the old times have used that. That is OK for Photos at times. You can't walk around doing that, not unless you do the Duck Walk all the time and then it still doesn't work. You are not going to walk straight down a street without it looking like you are on a Pogo Stick.

Exactly. The g85 is better, but the g7 is still great, 3 years later.

Does lowering contrast increase dynamic range or just artificially lower contrast on he g7?  I’m shooting flattened natural but debating if it is worth it over stock settings.

I know that but it’s not like ibis will save you then. Use a gimbal or steadicam

The G7 is crap compared to a G85. How hard is that to comprehend? You are recommending a older, inferior camera for people to buy. I think it is wrong to do that. I don't care if you have had it for 10 years. It is now outdated. Bust your ass to get the colors right, but don't say it is some magic camera. It Isn't now. Was then maybe.

IBIS to me is a pretty niche thing. Nice for quick shots and travel. Whenever I used it for longer shots I always wished I had a tripod instead. Can't really replicate the smooth pan you get from a nice tripod. Of course a nice tripod head costs you. Definitely pretty useless as a gimbal replacement. Maybe dual IS on some level.

It is nice for quick shots though and again I'd buy a Olympus m10 mk3

I'm not saying the g85 isn't the better camera

g85 being a better value ≠ g7 being a bad value.

They can BOTH be good values no?

Exactly. And their isn’t really much competition from other companies that deliver what the g7 does. Sony a6000 is overheating 1080p. Canon m50 is more expensive with nice 1080 but useless 4K and bad assist features. Em10iii maybye?? But no flat profile on it. The g7 IS still a good value, even if the g85 is technically better.

G7 has the best HD quality of the Lumix G series, even better than legendary GH2 imho. G85 and GX85 got worse in that regard. So for the HD alone I love my G7, pretty amazing codec too. But, my personal to go camera is the GX85, nice n pretty and beautiful to play around with. I use it a lot of times to get ideas and to design shots. The G85 would not interest me because of the worse HD quality.

i also love the g7’s hd, and I usually shoot in it and shoot 4K if the workflow feels worth it. The hd  has plenty of detail and it’s definately on par with gh2 and gh3 except the 60p codec is a little low. Still grades better than I would expect.

The G85 has noticeable aliasing (in some circumstances) in 1080p. I've never owned a G7 (only G5, G6, G85, GX85, G9) but I think the FHD quality actually got a bit worse with GX85 and G85. Also the audio from the on-camera mics is worse on GX85/G85 than the earlier cameras (low-level crackling noises and distortion, presumably due suppressing the noise from the IBIS system).

If you are in the market for another micro-4/3 camera, keep a watch on the prices for the G9 - they keep falling (currently less than £1000 in the UK, body only). When Panasonic were doing 'double cashback' (£300 back) offers a few months ago I finally bought one. It's a great camera - almost instant start-up, lovely EVF, excellent 1080p (much better than the G85), 4k60p if you need it (albeit with a 10 minute record limit) and superb IBIS - the tripod-like 'I.S. lock' mode is just amazing... The audio sounds better too (both from the on-camera mics and using external mics). Yes, it's a stills-targeted camera, but it seems to share the video and audio processing pipeline of the GH5 (without the more specialist video-orientated features), at a somewhat lower price.

My own favourites out of the cameras I've owned - the G6, GX85 and G9.
