Sam Mendes to direct next James Bond film!

Skyfall director Sam Mendes is to direct the 24th James Bond film, due for release in 2015, it has been announced.

Daniel Craig will reprise his role as the British spy, with the script penned by Oscar winner, John Logan.

Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said: "We're really excited to be working once again with Daniel Craig, Sam Mendes and John Logan."

Bond 24 is due for release in the UK on 23 October 2015.

It will have its US release two weeks later, on 6 November.

Mendes, who directed the recently-opened West End musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, said he was "very much looking forward to taking up the reigns again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time".

He added: "I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24."

Skyfall made $1.1bn (£700m) at the worldwide box office. It was also the highest-grossing film of all time in the UK, earning more than £94m from ticket sales in 40 days to beat the previous record holder Avatar, which made £94m in 11 months.

Skyfall won two Oscars - singer Adele's theme song of the same name won best original song and there was an award for sound editing.

It was also named the outstanding British film by Bafta.

It was reported in May that Mendes had resumed talks with producers about directing the next Bond film, having previously ruled himself out due to other commitments.

Mendes is due to follow Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by directing Shakespeare's King Lear at the National Theatre in January 2014.

The last film-maker to lead consecutive Bond movies was former editor John Glen, who directed five films in a row between 1981 to 1989.

Good news ! Im excited the winning team from Skyfall is back together - we just hope Roger Deakins is back too!!

I really admire Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins, but Skyfall was terrible, regardless of how much money it made, sometimes it was just plain ridiculous.

I hope they watch these and avoid some of the mistakes in the next movie:

I'll tell ya exactly what was wrong with Skyfall. Supposably heroic Bond dies in the first 10 minutes and reveals constant human weaknesses throughout, whilst M and Q are truly awful characters.

M is boring and po-faced.

Q is irritating, geeky and smug.

I thought Skyfall was perfectly good as entertainment but not exceptional. The whole thing just lacked charm. I think they need to return to a less po faced era of Bond. Why so serious?

Let's see some more out-there characters and some wit in the set pieces.

In the past he'd drive a submarine car through the sea and arrive on a beach. Now it is all gritty reality. Zzz. Like Call of Duty.

Part of the joy of Bond is that he's not politically correct or gritty... He has a smooth sheen and charm. So a more edgy script wouldn't go a miss either. He's become like a bland corporate assassin rather than renegade.

One final rant - it is unfashionable to try to give a hero normal human weaknesses. Nolan has done that now. We're over it. It only worked in the original super hero comics because it allows the everyman to empathise with the hero, giving him the vulnerabilities of any young person. But it has gone too far with Bond / Batman and isn't escapism any more. What was exciting about Bond in Skyfall? He was kaput for most of it. Make him truly heroic. Having him 'die' within the first 10 minutes of Skyfall was ridiculous.

Agreed. I thought that Pierce Brosnan's Bond had it right. Daniel Craig's Bond echoes Jason Bourne a little too much for me.

I don't think Brosnan had it right either to be honest! Not enough imagination in the script or charm, they really are just bog standard action pictures. Casino Royale was the strongest of the current lot, as it at least had some glamour and a tightly woven Ian Fleming story. They should have had Tarantino directing it though. Martin Campbell was somewhat uninspired and safe.

I think it is the writing which separates classic Bond from new-age Bond. The modern era writing is soulless and the gender roles are becoming reversed. The Bond girls act more like heroes than Bond himself does. That is a complete 180 degree switch in the original Fleming formula.

watch the film ' The International ' with Clive Owen - its basically a Bond film with Clive as an Interpol Agent -

and there are 2 key scenes from it that Skyfall shamelessly - stole from it.

A chaise on the rooftops of the Grand Bazaar in Instanbul Turkey and the meeting in an art gallery scene - Both in the Clive Owen film before Skyfall was shot.

I think Sam Mendes must have been watching Clive Owen in 'The International' on heavy rotation on his dvd player to get ideas for Skyfall........

If Clive Owen become Bond i would not even watch any Bond movies for the whole series

That's peculiar. Ever since I saw The Hire (medieval kind of art sponsoring from BMW), I couldn't get the connection Owen-Bond out of my head:

But maybe you're right. Owen often acts as if he was Bond, and no other Bond did (Connery not cool, aggressive, Lazenby cool, but no edges, Moore not aggressive, too smug, Dalton did well, but looked too different from expectation (mine though), Brosnan also can't be convincingly aggressive or show that cruelty Fleming describes). Or, as Stanley Kubrick liked to categorize actors: If James Bond and Richard Burton had a baby, it would be Clive Owen.

I hope they watch these and avoid some of the mistakes in the next movie:

Continuity errors as well as common logic errors can't be applied to such a show. Continuity is not what makes action flow and gather speed. There are films that have perfect continuity, which is not easy to have, but which always takes out momentum. There are pixel peepers and there are continuity watchers, and both don't see the wood for the trees.

As for the logic, there are two kinds of it. If believability is meant, you can't make Bond fly with probability bounding him to earth. Bond wasn't written by John le Carre, the audience must provide the believing.

The second kind of logic is the religious logic. Bond had no home, he wasn't raised, he certainly had no childhood traumata. That was the main failure of Skyfall, they reduced a hero to some policeman with a past, how are they ever to let him be an enigmatic archetype again?

So, for instance, you can let a bunch of dwarfs win against an army of Orks, but you can't have Clark Kent analyzed to prove his oedipus complex.
