Shooting RAW for the first time

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Amateur photographer here. It seems like most people on this sub agree that shooting RAW instead of JPEG is the better/more professional choice, so recently I figured I'd give it a shot.

What I found is that all my photos basically came out darker and more grainy, sort of to my surprise. What I later learned through some research is that JPEGs automatically go through some level of processing as soon as the photo is taken, whereas RAW photos do not. So RAW requires some more hands-on post-processing to get a good finished product (correct me if I'm wrong about any of this).

I did a bunch of editing, but ended up feeling like I couldn't manage to get my photos to look as good as I could have if I had shot JPEG. Basically now I'm frustrated and have switched back to JPEG for now because I feel like there must be some basic RAW editing techniques that I'm missing. My photos simply look worse in quality. So this is where you guys come in!

What's your process for editing RAW photos, and how do you do it differently than you would with a JPEG?

Thank you my issue has been solved,......
