So it might work fine

Have you tried that FFMPEG GUI that I linked to earlier?  It works fine for me. I just change the ProRes preset to profile: 2.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg-batch/

Didn't try as i found this program that is really easy to work with and seems the results are ok.

But i'll try to compare the size of the same file transcoded to prores

ProRes has very specific data rates. If two programs make files of differing sizes, one of them is wrong, either by using the wrong ProRes flavor (LT, HQ, etc) or it's not really creating a proper ProRes file.

Should be ok but will try.

The program i was told to use is ffmpeg based too and the gui is really easy to use, even batching, so i cross fingers

hope i don't go too far off topic

hit a bit of a rock, put the free resolve on my laptop, however the free resolve doesn't like gopro format. footage was from a 4 silver, yet to try my 6 but  i'm not holding my breath. googled it and its a known issue, the workaround is to transcode it to something else first from what i have read yet to try it out. hopefully i might get my bmp4k today which will gift me a full version of resolve and a whole new camera ecosystem to learn with  its own interesting quirks and nuances no doubt.

i've just seen that premiere offers to transcode files when you create a project, it offers prores as well as dnxhd and no quality loss

Considering both DNxHD and ProRes are lossy codecs, that last bit sounds like false advertising. But it will be veey little loss, really not a big deal at all. It sounds like a really neat feature.

  • 2 weeks later...

so i just did my transcoding using shutter encoder. from h265 fuji xt3 to dnxhr-hq files.

had 471 files total of 91.5go it ended 773go took around 2.5hrs

two images that i captured using vlc. i chose  a frame that is quite difficult because low light and some noise.

don't remember the settings when shooting, where can i get that ? mediainfo doesn't seem to give me the iso and aperture.

first is dnxhr second is h265

i notice i slightly different color tone on the cheekbone

Have you compared color in Premiere or Resolve? VLC is notorious for having no color management. If the color different is apparent in Resolve, then it might be that problem with the way XT3 files are tagged. I haven't looked into that issue yet, but there are a few threads here talking about it. My guess is either VLC is showing the wrong colors on the file, or it's this tagging issue.

It is also possible that Shutter Encoder is actually changing the color in your files in a way that doesn't have anything to do with color space tagging. It doesn't seem likely, but it's possible.

Hmm, I looked in ffprobe, but I don't see that particular info. I suspect that the XT3 doesn't record ISO and aperture information for video files.
