Do I understand this right: someone could cause you serious harm simply by claiming copyright violation on three of your videos? No "in dubio pro reo", no nothing? For me too this is a reason to consider alternatives. But are there any with comparable features? Let us know if you've found a convincing alternative. Vimeo can't guarantee that. They could just remove the DMCA videos, but no - they had to go an extra draconian unnecessary step to satisfy whatever lawyer shit they found themselves in - and delete all the legal videos of that user as well. But what other trustworthy hosting sites are there except of Youtube? Sites that are not in danger of being shut down unexpectedly due to lack of traffic/revenue. Remember Vuala, that cloud storage by LaCie? A few years ago you could get some free GBs on Vuala when buying a USB stick by Lacie. It was limited to a year so I even paid to continue using it only to be informed weeks later the service will shut down... Vimeo is live for 14 years now, that's almost an eternity on the internet. According to that screenshot Andrew posted there is a resolution process. You get banned if there are three unresolved strikes. I can leave it overnight and it will plough through my entire account, maximising my efficiency at downloading them. I've also been hearing a lot about floatplane as a youtube/vimeo alternative, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them - I think they are new, but right now it seems to be pay to access, which obviously would be a problem. Its the one with the green circle and a white cloud in it. I've been using it for years to download videos so that I could watch them without getting constant interruptions (despite lightening fast internet). I don't think you have to pay? Although I think the free version has some restrictions like playlists can't be longer than a certain size, but you can copy/paste each video URL in there and DL them that way. Super Members BTM_Pix Posted October 24, 2018 Super Members Share Posted October 24, 2018 A good few years ago when wedding and videographers were trying to stay within the law when selling DVDs that had copyrighted music in them, the PRS came up with a very pragmatic solution called a Limited Manufacture license. The LM license lets you license the use any piece of recorded music with a sliding scale of costs depending on how many physical copies that you are going to sell, so if you are doing a wedding video that will only have 3 copies produced then it will be about £7 to cover the license and if you are doing a school play that you sell 100 copies of it will be about £40 etc Basically, by recognising that not everyone is making a feature film but still wants to be able to use some music, they have made a system that is simple enough, appropriate enough and cost effective enough that people will choose to use it and stay legal. It also means, of course, that the artists still get paid something rather than the nothing they would receive otherwise. One interesting part of the license is the 'Amateur Societies' clause which also grants the license for the following : Recordings made for playing and showing only as part of the practicing, participating and competing in recognised amateur society activities, including: musical gymnastics, horse dressage, synchronized swimming, amateur dramatics and amateur film making. Obviously, this means that if you made a film that you would normally put on Vimeo but instead made a DVD of it that you showed as part of a film making club then you would be covered. Where this LM license scheme needs to catch up is in making a version of it that recognises that places such as Vimeo are the modern de facto version of an amateur film making society. Or at least they could be. If Vimeo had a specific walled off section that was designated as an amateur film making society only (with no links, no product reviews, no ads etc) then I do think there is something there that could be negotiated.
