Great stuff @Charlie!

Just one thing that looked like it might have been out of place - on the shots where she was silhouetted against the sunset the highlights of her dress were iridescent blue.  Was that intentional?  It looked more like the orange/teal grade had gone a little awry?

Hey, I'm shooting a doc film with the GH5.  It's a really good camera.  If you can't utilize these tools nowadays to actually make great looking things, then you got bigger issues.  The gear is ridiculous.  Honestly, I can't think of any decent upmarket consumer camera that's come out in the past year  or so that I wouldn't be able to shoot good looking video with.

As an older guy that dealt with film and tube cameras early on in his career, this stuff nowadays is so awesome --I still can't quite get over it.

Well it’s easy for him to say, since he’s shooting with an Alexa and Angenieux lenses, but I’ve just got a crappy old mirrorless. ?

I'd be happy with your crappy old mirrorless...  if your GH5 or A7III start cluttering up your place I'll let you store them at mine!!

Charlies post got me thinking about this board and who is on here.

I think it tends to be a place for a few situations:

  • Contemplating upgrades
  • Keeping up with technology
  • Socialising

I don't see a problem with any of these, as even for people who shoot all the time there are still these situations :)

I don't think there should be less talk about gear, but I'd love if there was more talk about the artistic aspects of film-making as well.  After all, once you buy a camera and learn the exposure triangle the rest is really working out what to point it at! ?

I'd say No3 in 95% - Socialising, including soft psychotherapy... it include everything else as excuse.

I think it depends on which threads you look at, and which conversations you choose to read :)

@Charlie @zerocool22 I've struggled to find places that talk about creativity rather than equipment too.

There are a few threads here, but I think the real artistic knowledge is worth money and is held mostly by people too busy making films to hang out online or the people who do hang online are selling that knowledge via online courses.

There is a lot of debate about "should I go to film school" and one of the arguments for and against it is that the best way to learn is to practice and actually make films - the people who say avoid film school say make lots of films instead and the people that say go to film school say that it's good because it forces you to make lots of films (as well as other advantages too of course).

I've found that EOSHD is good for equipment discussions, forums like https://liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php which is about colour grading and post production, and manufacturer specific forums where users of that software/hardware sometimes talk about creativity, but they're often rare.  I like liftgammgain because a lot of what colourists do is artistic judgement so those topics come up quite frequently.
