Am I weirdo for mainly being interested in the 1080p Raw and ProRes? Plus the XLR... that’s just insane at this price point.

Well this is the original one on steroids! So yeah I think the 1080p will look a lot more cinematic probably than 4k is ever going to look like, but we haven't seen it so. Not counting the data usage 4k will bring. I would imagine people will down rez to 1080p from 4k for serious stuff, lesser codec for Vimeo, YouTube, etc..

I don’t see anyone complaining here. 100% total agreement. Which, quite frankly, is a little disconcerting. ?

I was hoping the sensor/lens mount was going to be a detachable micro with wifi control from the pocket mothership, so there's that.

Well I can understand this, it is not for everybody, but for a hell of a lot of people on this web site we now know what the hell camera we are going to have under the Christmas tree.

Reality overcomes the best of our wishful dreaming... The usual brands should hear that though ;-)

The image is beautiful, but the horrible audio preamps and battery life, poor screen, and overall ergonomics trumped the amazing IQ for me.

Well the BMPCC was a "cinema camera", thus external power/audio/screen is essential if you want high quality. Just like if you used an Arri / RED / etc! I don't get why people didn't get this.  Instead expecting something completely different.

However it appears BMD really took this criticism to heat, and have greatly improved the audio and internal battery life.

However the audio in even the original BMPCC isn't that awful if just for casual usage, a lot of my vlog videos are audio straight into the BMPCC with no editing. https://www.youtube.com/c/SoundSpeeding

You guys need to learn how to hold your cameras correctly, and also how to pull focus. I have a few Cannes lions under my belt and I’ve shot with no ibis, non active lens mounts and finally NO AF for the past 7-8years. This camera is crazy insane, and also it’s freaking 1400dollars with tax!!! Like what stuff do you guys even shot?!

"few Cannes lions", impressive stuff. Grats. You might get a few more with this new camera!

However the main reason I liked the original Pocket was down to the charm, the mojo, the classic look - 99% of cameras with IBIS, great low light, HFR are still being beat by the original Pocket in this regard.

Also you have to remember that this camera is for cinematic application, and is designed to be used as such. Not really the type of camera to run and gun with in a cave lit only by glow flies!

Exactly.

When I spoke to the folks at Panasonic they suggested they would be ready to act if the situation warranted it.

If this suggests what we all can't stand (a company purposefully holding their tech back) that is lame sauce. Just makes me more interested in giving BM my money over any other company. Bring it, or don't. Another company forcing your hand makes you a weak follower and definitely not for the customer.

If I may be allowed to say so, shooting RAW does require more grading skills than I currently possess.

I guess we all see these guys to simply revolutionize this craft. Resolve is a hell of a tool. Less than two decades ago we had to invest 100 grand to try fulfilling the cup. It is a dream to become true. Petty's going further than Jannard went a decade ago :-)

The thing is, if Oliver graded the music videos I’ve seen of his himself, he has a high skill level that many of us don’t have. I could play the devil’s advocate and say that’s the reason pros entrust colorists with their footage. Just like directors hire you because you are an audio specialist.

Is that how BMD will market it?

Hopefully this announcement will force the big boys to put ProRes raw in all their future cameras, and maybe even a few current ones. I'd probably choose a GH5s over this if it shot raw.

I’m with you on that. We should put pressure on Panny to follow suit, and encourage reviewers and luminaries who have Panasonic’s ear to do the same.

In the cinema5D interview, Grant Petty was making it out to be perfect for selfies. Not sure what’s up with that.

Well yeah ProRes in the BM is what makes it happen. So yeah if the GH5s had it it would, other than the 5" screen a few other bits, it probably would be a better way to go no doubt.  But it is nearly 3 times the money without the Resolve.

I think we are going to see who has pissed off Apple the most on who they will give a license too LoL. Maybe Apple will be greedy and give it to Anyone!

Panasonic doesn’t need to license Prores RAW. They only need to enable RAW out. Atomos will do the rest.

Anthony, we're living truly game changing times, I'm sure of that : ) Your RAW is going mainstream, buddy! The things will never be the same from now on. The new Atomos toy, light like that (!) -- add a sensor couple to the rest of all package and we'll have such mandatory rule from now on. Maybe more prone to motion pictures than hybrid stuff but I want to believe RAW is not only for stills as 2018 basis. Hope do not need to wait for next one anyways :-D

Yeah but that is more damn money and a big ass thing hanging off the camera, batteries lasting 30 minutes on the recorder.. Hell I am not going to use Raw for shit either. Too much work, too much disk space. I am going to use plain old ProRes. It is just a nicer codec to work with.
