So, If you are not a sports photographer, is the A7iii, for a portion of the money, a better option than the top-flagship-high end?!

Except if it doesn't have something simple, like no ports except a micro USB2.0, just for the shake of market fragmentation and what not.

Interesting though, and the price seems right.

My hopes and dreams:

Everything what A7R3 already has, but with 24MP sensor, with sub 2k price tag

In summary: A7R3 like 4k in both FF and crop mode, good iso range till 12800 in video, nice AF performance with adapted lens in video mode, better IBIS, new battery type, and bright screen with no dimming

Probably not, because it won't have the high frame rates for stills and, likely, not an electronic shutter.

of course, of course.  The price is right though. A7i & ii (and the whole series to a point) had a lot of basic issues and were rough around the edges. Better grip, battery, 4K, touch screen, new sensor and some improvements, can bring a lot of people to the full frame field. No real facts though. We will see. The market will be very strong, very soon (with the latest announcements, a couple from last year, and the next ones!).

Unless a person has a specific need (perhaps a hardcore landscape photographer) then I just don't see the point in going beyond 24 megapixels. It is like people who film video at greater than 6K resolution. We're just talking total overkill here, and there are downsides when it comes to processing times and storage space.

If it will shoot longer without overheating in 4K, and if it will have a better screen / less dimming than the a6300 / a6500, and a bit better DR than the APS-C models, and better rolloff, and same accuity in 4K, and good 1080p, then I might move from Sony APS-C to full frame.

If it is at $1,900 that puts in about same category as new Fuji X-H1.

So please, Sony, 14 stops of DR without using S Log and good image quality in 4K and 1080p. Is that too much too ask?

14 stops without SLOG? Is that even possible?

Probably not :p

Although Mattias guestimated that the D750 had 13 stops of DR in Flat profile. He compared it to his black magic cameras shooting in raw and prores, if I remember correctly.

To my untrained eye, Nikon seems to have some kind of magic going on with their Analog / Digital converters that sony still doesn't seem to have mastered :(

Real world reviews of a9 show a 70-90% hit rate, so those 20pfs don't really get fully utilized. The same AF module could give you a better hit rate at the "meager" 7fps.
