A tip to "break out" of whatever tunnel vision you might be in: use the search bar!

Do a few searches and you'll not only find other content directly, but it will start to be suggested to you too.

I watch a very diverse range of content on YouTube, and is fun seeing how the recommendations change all over the place week by week, due to whatever had been taking my recent fancy lately.

Well, yeah. But you need an original thought to do that. You don't get these by consuming lots of vlog content. My YT suggestions are quite colorful, but they do change aggressively if I watch one or two videos of a topic that I am not very much interested in. I would imagine a lot of people then fill their boredom with said suggestions going down the rabbit hole.

Good observations, Andrew. However, Youtube is not meant to edify people, it's actually meant to do the opposite.

Cultural Marxism:

The gradual process of destroying all traditions, languages, religions, individuality, government, family, law and order in order to re-assemble society in the future as a communist utopia. This utopia will have no notion of gender, traditions, morality, god or even family or the state.

As historian Arnold Toynbee once pointed out, "Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder".

We are in the process of dying.

Be careful throwing that term (Cultural Marxism) around, it carries strong anti-Semitic connotations. I agree that a lot of social media is designed to be addictive (which isn't good), but I don't think YouTube is part of a global conspiracy, zionist or otherwise. (If anything, it's capitalism's fault for YouTube pushing the lowest common denominator to please shareholders... not that I'm anti-capitalist, just in favor of some regulation or community backlash, perhaps.)

That's not to say there isn't something wrong. But it's also nothing new. We saw a very similar narrative (anti-globalist, anti-cosmopolitan pro-cultural identity) before WWII. There was a similar rise of "strong man" leaders, then, too. In contemporaneous literature, the Wasteland was largely about the loss of cultural identity in London. And even Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces explores the loss of ceremony and tradition in Western Civilization... A lot of the themes they explore are the same themes Richard Spencer focuses on, except, you know, without the white supremacy...

In a way, these forums are surrogate communities offering their own tribal identities. It's kind of funny. We should be spending more time with real communities, actually making films. But it feels a need, and we learn a lot.

And on the flip side, there's historically less famine now than ever in human history, quality of life is higher, and there's far less hot war now than is historically typical (let's hope that trend continues). I don't see how that's suicide. I do think there are deep problems to address, but they're not insurmountable unless we convince ourselves they are.

I see both sides (Andrew's and Joachim's).  This is Andrew's attempt to invoke change...it's his call to action.  You can't blame someone for casting their opinion on the matter.  Especially one that's close to his heart.  Unfortunately it's going to do about as much good as does public bitching about politics.  99% of the people who are vocal about a certain subject will never actually DO ANYTHING to actively change things.

Words are weapons?  We were raised to believe "It's not what you say, it's what you do."  We were taught that "Sticks and stones can break our bones but words can never hurt us."  Sadly it seems that the pussification & political correctness of society has yielded just the opposite.  The exchange of opinions on social platforms is about as effective as people puking into a swimming pool and proceeding to slosh around and exchange hand-fulls of vomit (my own comments included).  It quickly becomes an indistinguishable mess where no one is sure what belongs to who, and why we started doing this in the first place.

On the other hand it could not be easier to remove yourself from the likes of these detestable sites, and ensure you don't encounter their idiotic content.  I love eating healthy, natural food, but I'm not mad at McDonalds for capitalizing on people who want the instant gratification of a cheap unhealthy meal...I'll simply choose to eat somewhere else.  Hell, I can even open my own healthy restaurant and make a run at doing things my way.

You should view the vidiots as mere moths.  An insignificant distraction to those who hone their craft and produce quality content.  Logan Paul will not be asked to co-direct with David Fincher any time soon.  Maybe he's currently getting big paid for his clickbait.  His easily digestible, appeal to the masses, thoughtless dregs of a You Tube channel, but that's a fad, and fads have a shorter lifespan than ever before.  The flavor of the month is just that (and guess what, there's an all new and improved one next month).  The cream will continue to rise to the top, maybe just not the top of You Tube.  So fuck 'em.

Yeah I must admit California is a beautiful place to live. But I am retired and unless you have a Serious income living there is Not a option. But there always seems to be some goofy thing happening there, and it seems to be happening hot and heavy lately. I Need to go out there again to see my daughter and family soon. Running out of time. She didn't come where I live last year so.

I have a Dually pickup truck that I bought last year and I am doing needed maintenance on, and I think I will buy a 5th Wheel this year. So hopefully I get it all going and away I go LoL. Hard to save up money once you are retired. No second job or overtime to snag when like you are younger.

And being into Video does not help at ALL. :grimace:

You never know, Logan Paul might read EOSHD, before buying a camera. He might be really tearful of the thought of his favourite camera blog hating him so much, and vow to change once and for all into a better human.

*Granted it's unlikely but you never know*

People say violence never solves anything but I wouldn't mind a clip surfacing of this asshole being punched out by a decent citizen of the world.

Logan is in the eye of a media culture shit-o-cane. In fact, he is the faeces.

You know that same sort of thing happened to me in 2008. And at the time I lived in Florida when house values went down the crapper. So I lost most of my money in the Stock Market and just about gave my paid off house away. I was a year from being able to retire at 62. So I sold off all I could, got out of debt and hated the hell out of my job for a year.

Then I retired. I am pretty lucky to have Social Security and 2 Pensions. My first wife died of Cancer so I get her pension on top of mine for the rest of my life. So yeah I could use extra money, who can't but I don't really need it to live month to month. Just to buy Toys LoL. Things happen that you have very little control of. When you are younger you can bounce back back. My age not so much.

One thing I can tell you younger guy to do. Naturally not try and get a zillion dollars in debt, but to try hard as hell to keep a good credit rating. And try hard as hell to repair it if it is crap.

When you are older you can't show a lot of income unless you are lucky as hell so if your credit is crap you have to Buy everything at a higher interest rate because of  bad credit. Or hell you might not be able to buy it at all.

And say you want to go on a big trip, or buy a RV you have to have a couple of credit cards with high credit limits in case your RV breaks down, your truck blows an engine, or on a vacation and you are snowed in for a month. Without them you are screwed unless you have a Mom who will send you money by the hand fulls LoL. And by the time you are old good chance both your parents are dead. My Mom is still going strong at 93, but my father died at 62. You Never know.

It takes money to do anything, but if you are 1,000 miles from home you REALLY need money at times. Keep Good Credit! It will bite you in the ass if you don't. Young or old.

so you guys are pro censorship for stuff you dislike?

Broadly, it depends by whom and what you mean by "censor." (In this case it's just a warning before the video, so I'm not even sure it's censorship.) Generally, I'm for private self-censorship and rating boards but not for government-mandated censorship. One reason England has the BBFC (which is allowed to censor and/or ban movies as part of a government mandate) and we have the MPAA (which is simply a private rating board) is because the American film industry took it upon themselves to "censor" (or just self-censor among their exhibitors) films produced by its members and exhibited in its theaters. This tamed the moral hysteria of the era and avoided government censorship (which would be, imo, anti-first amendment) like you see in the UK. So as much as people (often fairly, imo) complain about MPAA ratings, I think the institution is a good one and the institution of private censorship is a good one, too. YouTube, FaceBook, Twitter, etc. are not public institutions. They have every right to ban and block whomever they want, and those people then have the right to look elsewhere to express their opinions.

I'm not for government censorship of hate speech, though. I support The Daily Stormer's right to exist every bit as much as I support the web hosts (private companies) who refuse to host them.

In sum, yes, I support YouTube putting a warning before hate speech. It's their freedom of speech as a private enterprise that allows them to put that warning there, after all. So at the private level yes and at the public level no.

well that was very well said, i couldnt agree more

*I* personally, as a US citizen (and as a jew), dont like the blocking/removal/censorship of anything, ever, nor do i like the idea of "hate speech" – super troubling

on the other hand i strongly support the rights of ~any~ private entity to do whatever they want as far as that goes, and to answer to no one. the fact that youtube has grown so big is in fact the issue. and if it is an issue, only the users themselves are to blame

frankly, when it comes to youtube, im blissfully oblivious to content i dont like, and inundated with content i do like! when youtube recommends some bullshit i dislike on my home page, i just 'x' it away~!

i think the core of this debate is that youtube isnt a public utility. some may want it to be. but really its pretty easy to get lots of recommendations for r.e.m. and st dane videos, while avoiding the logan pauls and neo nazis

at the end of the day tho: ill stand up for the right of neo nazis to have a march on my street – a street with no mailboxes, mail service or sidewalks, but a public street nonetheless. if i turn the hose on em thats my business

I agree with you about Cali webrunner. I was born and raised in SoCal. Lived there for nearly 40 years. Was a public school teacher for over a decade, then was suddenly fired because I wouldn't call a girl a boy. My family and I have since moved from the Communist State of California, and I hope to never return. I too wish they'd succeed, but it'll never happen.
