Two problems I see that in reality can never be put back in the Bottle is 24 hour news shows, and a amazingly scary amount of up loads to You Tube every day.

The news shows are looking for the most dirt they can find, whether it is true or not. They don't dare fact check it or someone else will not and beat them to the story. Endless loop.

No way in hell You Tube can review the stuff as fast as it comes in, probably not even with computers let alone 1,000's of humans. So no clue how they stop it. Lots of people can care less if they get money from uploads, so no big deal if no advertiser wants to give them 5 cents.

And there are tons more problems like you mentioned. I see no way we Can go back. I think we are on the Highway to Hell to be honest. World was III around the corner maybe. It Ain't looking good long term I can tell you that much. I just see it getting much worse, let alone just treading water. I think the Internet may well prove to be the worse thing Ever invented in the long run. And we are not even talking about the "Dark Web", Christ.

I hate to agree with such a dire prediction, but in many ways I do. YouTube is one problem... 24 hour news is a problem, too. Whichever side you're on politically, I think most of us can agree that the dynamics between the current administration and the media are broken and hurtful and cruel. (And worse, weirdly addictive.)

The internet is one of the most significant and empowering technological innovations in the history of civilization (imo). The best metaphor for technology that I know of is the Prometheus myth; now, things are moving so fast that we can really see the world burning. But at the same time there is less famine and disease and suffering than there has ever been.

Bad YouTube videos don't bother me much because there's also good stuff. What bothers me more are the comments and bullying. I never really watched much reality tv, or a lot of popular sitcoms, but I still like tv a lot. YouTube is fine. I do wish it were easier for niche content creators to see similar returns to the big guys, though. Maybe that will happen later. The current landscape bothers me a bit, but it's not causing me to freak out. Same shit. Different sandwich.

What does bother me is the Neo-tribal and feudal discourse that the internet for whatever reason (anonymity? lack of empathy?) promotes. What also bothers me is the addictive nature of it (and of loot boxes and social media apps that are modeled after gambling). I think we can get past this, but real name forums don't seem much better (RedUser is a pretty tribal place still) and I'm not sure VR will help or hurt–it has the potential to do both. It's more a question, as always, of how we respond.

The scariest part is when you see online feudalism ingress into the real world. Cyberbullying leading to suicide... Alt-right (and far left) violence fueled by echo chambers on reddit and 4chan... ISIS recruitment... etc. YouTube comments come to life. As a whole, humans are a resilient species. We'll adapt to change, take responsibility, repent, and collectively sacrifice ourselves, even sacrifice our civil liberties, whatever it takes for the greater good. The question to me now is the cost of it all, the cost of fast innovation and the difficulty we're having adapting to it.

I don't want to see a nuclear war started over a twitter fight. Maybe it's selfish of me–maybe the result of that would be lasting world peace, much as Americans stopped fighting Americans after the Civil War and WWII brought a global economy and political fraternity that up until now was working well. Good still won, despite the cost. But to me, personally, perhaps selfishly, I don't want to see nuclear war at any cost. I suspect humanity on an evolutionary level has a need for a tribal identity that will always divide us, and I think that now that we have the ability to destroy ourselves we have to address that at a deeper level–perhaps by transcending violence and feudalism, perhaps even by transcending capitalism some day (not for a while, I think capitalism is the best thing we've currently got).

As technology empowers us more and more, as a species, we need to rise to the occasion. It's the Prometheus myth after all. The same technology that threatens to tear us apart also empowers us to do something to prevent just that. I take some solace in how good humanity's track record has been–despite atrocities along the way–but I also fear that we've reached a breaking point from which we might potentially destroy our species or lose our souls. We need to work less on tech, more on ourselves.

Not sure what camera this was shot on, but wow I do like the look, and it is a great interview to boot!

From the thumbnail you can easily tell a C300 or similar was used. Who knows about the B cam which that thumbnail was shot with however.

But how much of the "look" is down to the camera, and how much the lighting? As clearly care was taken with doing decent lighting. And that is what I feel really makes the difference.

Good points. And yeah I didn't see that thumbnail very well.

Not overly fond of the harsh lighting on David Sandberg's face, the fake window directly behind his head, the over-sharpening, the magenta skin tones and all the teal. The interviewer benefits from better lighting and background. Audio's clear though.

Wow, you guys are picking on Seinfield and Jackass now ... I can see that you are approaching this issue from the wrong viewpoint - you fret about shitty content (Seinfield was pretty great, Jackass also, if you knew where they came from), but the real issue is IMO different.

Facebook and YouTube have a single objective and that is to keep you on their platform watching videos for as long as they can (more time to display ads). They do this by analyzing the content you watched and predicting which content you'd like to watch next. This leads to a sorts of a tunnel vision that even TV could not lock you in - you are feed similar kind of content indefinitely and you never go "off-topic". So, you watch one or two vlogs and you get bombarded by similar crap for eternity.

If there was some sort of curated content section, you might dive into a entirely new subject, but as it stands now, you are locked into this narrow subject matter that slowly bores you to death, but nothing ever gives you a suggestion to "mix it up a little".

A tip to "break out" of whatever tunnel vision you might be in: use the search bar!

Do a few searches and you'll not only find other content directly, but it will start to be suggested to you too.

I watch a very diverse range of content on YouTube, and is fun seeing how the recommendations change all over the place week by week, due to whatever had been taking my recent fancy lately.

Good observations, Andrew. However, Youtube is not meant to edify people, it's actually meant to do the opposite.

Cultural Marxism:

The gradual process of destroying all traditions, languages, religions, individuality, government, family, law and order in order to re-assemble society in the future as a communist utopia. This utopia will have no notion of gender, traditions, morality, god or even family or the state.

As historian Arnold Toynbee once pointed out, "Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder".

We are in the process of dying.

I work full time in marketing at a company that sells 90% online and I can tell you that YT and FB are perfectly oiled machines that serve consumers exactly what they want to see. That's why they are worth billions.

Youtube being worth "billions" is questionable.  They've lost money for years.  I think they may be in the neighborhood of breakeven at the moment.  A lot of businesses are more profitable than Youtube with a fraction of the awfulness.

The only way to stop all of the shit is to not participate. Teach younger kids to find more substantive content. I've been off of Facebook for 4 years now and it feels good!

There are at least two problems with that.  The first is keeping your child off of Youtube and Facebook is going to be a tough struggle and turn them into an outcast.  The second is you will deprive them of the good content on Youtube...  There is no good content on Facebook.

I've been off of Facebook for years.  It is terrible.  Everyone just gossiping and showing off while corporations harvest your data.  And I don't even want to get into the Russia stuff so as not to trigger anyone.  Just a terrible cesspool.

I don't have any children, that god, but if I ever do I'm dreading dealing with their internet usage.

I didn't mean keep your kids off of YouTube, but just show them the better content and hope it sticks. It's the ole adage "no one knows what they want until you show them."

The problem is once they are on it you won't be able to control what they see 100% of the time.  Their friends will send them stuff, youtube will push stuff on them, after a decent video ends youtube will autoplay junk or something pornographic.

That's my problem with it.  I'm an adult and I can navigate around youtube albeit with some degree of irritation.  But I'm chatting with parents who are saying their innocent kid is looking some stuff up on Disney princesses and getting treated to porn.

Okay.  I was a bit extreme.  There is some good stuff on Facebook but there is way more toxic stuff.

Muaha, muaha, lol! That mimicry of a term is a nonsensical nonterm. There is no such thing as cultural marxism. What this right wing term is describing is in need of a better name. It´s neither cultural forofilmsism nor cultural pannysvhsism, muahaha!

To connect Arnold Toynbee to this term is very misleading.
